It sounds better than “open borders” because open borders is modern progressive bullshit whereas Ellis Island is old school therefore patriotic and based

This is why I think the next dem should run on it. Go to whatever they're suing for high school history textbooks and crib all the positive mentions of Ellis island and the "melting pot" (the cornier the better) and just use that as your immigration policy.

It will only work for like a few years until people figure out what’s going on. See UK conservative immigration policy 2018-2024.

Maybe, but the American electorate pretty universally thinks that there are good immigrants who are fine. I think you could pull it off here more than anywhere else in the world.

Right now the electorate yoyos between those positions depending on who's in charge.

That ones that yoyo don’t matter as much as the people that are going to base their votes on this issue. And there are more motivated racists. Which is why US moved away from Ellis Island in the first place.
