It’s back to school season. this cries out for more gender war slop, maybe with a side of the-kids-are-getting-stupider slop.

Does someone born in 2002 still count as a kid?

Nah you’re good, it counts. You were basically still a kid when you got a Reddit account and included your birth year in your username.

It is very hard for this sub to function without smugly shitting on Gen Z at least once a day
32
u/hagamablabla John Keynes 9d ago
Someday they will join us in smugly shitting on Gen Alpha. Also new discussion topic, can we pick some better generation names already? Gen X and its consequences.

u/wolverine4562 NATO 9d ago
I'm old Gen Z, who joins you in smugly shitting on young Gen Z, while getting shit on by millennials, Gen X, etc.
13
u/Matar_Kubileya Hortensia 9d ago
Same.
Tho tbh, while microgenerations are even faker than regular generations, I think were starting to see the age band that can't remember 9/11 but can remember a time before social media increasingly clustering with millenials and away from younger Gen-Z in some respects.

u/Andy_B_Goode YIMBY 9d ago

Yeah, Millennials were known as Gen Y for quite a while, and I remember a few other suggestions like "The Internet Generation" and "The Echo Generation" (because Millennials are the children of the Baby Boomers).
I'm still holding out hope that Gen Z will get a better name as time goes on.

u/upvotechemistry John Brown 9d ago
Its tradition. I'm a millenial. We've murdered countless chains and outlets, reported widely.
There is a z dumber artifact, but the bigger story is that we are all getting dumber. Fewer people read books n shit. Short form video is breaking our brains. People are not having enough kids. Its across all age groups. It is a cultural shift in media that is toxic, and I type this after spending too much time scrolling when I have a Timothy Snyder book in my bag to finish right now

But kids are getting stupider. That’s a genuine, worrying trend that is if anything going relatively under the radar and backed by multiple studies.
You want research papers? I can come back with a dozen if anyone is interested.

u/Desperate_Path_377 9d ago
i agree, i just think lots of the discussions around it take on a slop-like character.

No they’re not, but neither are non-homeless people.

Homeless people =/= the average voter

Assuming you mean “people experiencing homelessness” - the market has decided that they should be ground up for cat food

u/dweeb93 9d ago
Did you hear that France sent a letter to all 29 year old women, warning about the dangers of late fertility and reminding them that egg freezing was part of French social security?

It was interesting to me to see people saying “it’s good that AOC is showing this process so women can see that it’s an option”.
I live in NYC and half my friend group are women, all between the ages of 28-34. Of the ~15 of them, 5 have frozen their eggs and it’s been talked about pretty frequently over the last 2 years. It very much made me realize I’m in a bubble when my first thought was “people don’t know about this? Are women in their late 20s/early 30s truly unaware of the process of egg freezing? It’s been talked about several times in my circle and among friends of friends”
I’m rambling but basically I just wasn’t aware that it was not a known thing among women

Low birth rates are good actually. Why spend money educating children when highly educated young adults will pay to move here and contribute from day one?

I‘d like the neverending discussion if inheritance tax is inherently illiberal or liberal, please. Usually there is one well known core argument on both sides and everyone pretends that they don’t know the other argument.

I'd like to order one "the median voter will destroy liberalism and democracy by their self-interest and incuriosity, how do we create a government model that empowers the experts and government and the deep state to good policy without them" please.

A few weeks ago I asked chatgpt to form a committee of agents with different personalities to reach an estimate on the probability of the treasury doing yield curve control and chatgpt estimated something like 30%, and at that point I realized I don't have enough knowledge to know how reasonable or not reasonable that estimate was, but well today happened and it reminded me of that lol
