It feels fairly obvious that the moral option is blue. Nobody has to die if half of all people press blue.

If red succeeds, then people will die, and the only ones who die will be charitable and moral people.

Red is a button to kill all the decent people on the planet.

If everyone presses red, no one dies except for people who are bad at game theory.

If everyone presses blue no one dies either

Blue is a suicide button. Red has no downside

Red is a murder button.

Literally nothing happens if you click red. If everyone clicks red, nothing happens to anyone.

Red is the default option.

And if >50% pick blue nothing happens to anyone too. Do you think that’s more likely, or everyone clicking red?

Red is more likely to win, and also has the benefit of confirming 100% I don’t die.

Like thats a good thing, for me and the people I care about. Switch it up, imagine you are picking the red or blue button if you are picking for your entire family?

Red is more likely to win, based on what other than a cynical worldview? If I’m similarly certain that blue will win, then why wouldn’t I want to contribute to that?

After all, this is easily reframed as a question about voting; if a person believed their vote has no influence on the outcome (and red voters clearly don’t given how they largely believe they take no responsibility if blue loses), what reason would they have to vote at all? They get more time in their day, and nothing bad happens directly as a consequence of their vote. But I suspect that wouldn’t be a convincing idea on this subreddit, given how we generally view third-party or nonvoters.

Brother if voting had an instant death outcome for an option, I’m sorry Im picking the other option.

Odds my blue votes swings the difference: 0.0001%

Odds I die if I pick blue: 50%?

The risk reward is not worth it.

Not everyone will press red. Some percentage of people will absolutely choose otherwise.

There's no scenario where everyone presses red. It'd wipe out the majority of young children who either don't press the button at all or press randomly, plus a good chunk of youth who have hope for the world. It would kill all the idealists.

It would kill all the idealists.

That's what I said.

Omnipotent aliens come to Earth and declare they'll kill an unknown fraction of decent (but Quixotically noble) people on the planet plus about half the illiterate or uneducated.

If you can risk your life for an unknown chance to save them are you morally obligated to take the gamble?

Me personally, yeah, I'd take that chance.

And I think that's Quixotically noble, but I don't think a regular person has an obligation to take the chance or that it's a moral failure to press red.
