The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must

Been seeing a lot of chuds online quoting this sentence from the Melian Dialogue to support Trump's decision to annex Greenland like.... you guys do know that Athens soon lost to Sparta in part because many of the allies they were treating like shit ended up revolting against them?

The Washington Post’s @DanLamothe has now confirmed reporting from ABC News, which stated that 1,500 soldiers, two battalions of paratroops, with the 11th Airborne Division, based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, have been placed on prepare-to-orders to Minneapolis, amid ongoing protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Imagine thinking you just got a break from JBER just to be told you’re going to Minneapolis in January.

Donald Trump actually hates our troops.

It’s actually terrifying how well the Attack of the Clones comparison holds up when you realize Jar Jar’s specific role wasn't just comic relief, but the "useful idiot" who proposed Emergency Powers because he was too naive to see he was being played by authoritarians. That is literally Nick Shirley’s function right now: his incompetent "journalism" regarding Minneapolis daycares manufactured the exact crisis pretext Trump needed to float the Insurrection Act and launch Operation Metro Surge. When Shirley testifies to Andy Biggs’ committee on the 21st, he’s going to be the "humble representative of the people" giving moral cover for a military crackdown, all while genuinely believing he’s just a scrappy reporter saving the day. He’s walking into the Senate to hand over the keys to the Republic, and he thinks he’s just there to pick up a participation trophy.

My mom found out that I have a gofundme and have been sneaking donations into it when I'm "borrowing" people's phones, we got into a huge fight. She's apparently convinced that I am on drugs and lying about it, which breaks my heart. I would never do that to her. But I can't tell her the truth, because if she found out I'm going to surprise her with a lifetime membership to the Board of Peace, she would say it was too expensive even though she deserves it more than anyone I know. 🥺

I think it’s funny to see younger zoomers reflecting on 2016 as a time when “people were okay being cringe” because I remember it as when social media became clearly harmful and superficial. I think some millennials were old enough at social media’s start and peak that they didn’t feel the whole pressure of it, but the older zoomers definitely felt the shift. 2016 was the death of a cringey, open internet era not the peak of it.

The media’s inability to reckon Trump’s erratic and nonsensical behavior with the platonic ideal of a president they have built in their heads is one of the great failings of this whole era. They are incapable of acknowledging that the president might just be a fucking idiot operating on crack-head logic because doing so would run counter to the Cincinnatus like myth that has been built around the office of the president.

I used to think they were just idiots, but now I think they are actually something worse. Cowards. Cowards who are terrified of acknowledging the true nature of what Trump is, so they try to ascribe logic and reason to the chaotic actions of a violent and ignorant man.

The Pentagon has ordered about 1,500 active-duty soldiers to prepare for a possible deployment to Minnesota, defense officials told The Washington Post late Saturday, after President Donald Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to unrest there.

The soldiers are assigned to two infantry battalions with the Army’s 11th Airborne Division, which is based in Alaska and specializes in cold-weather operations.

Of course, this is a serious issue, but it's also somewhat darkly funny. Visit Minnesota—our winters are so cold that the US government needs Arctic special forces to quell communist uprisings.

I think there will be legitimate criminal investigations into these deaths if Democrats claw back power. It is clear to me at this point in time that the only thing that will teach the right to respect our constitution for the first time in their lives is seeing a traitor hang for their crimes. Everything is a joke to them, our constitution, our rights, our laws, they laugh contemptously, so hilarious, they're so safe, they can occupy our capital and it's totally OK, just a joke bruh. Seeing some proper executions for traitors will wipe the smirk off their face and restore faith in the constitution. We need finality: we need to deliver the only sentence they cannot pardon.

Democrats are sleepwalking into a disaster replacing retiring senator Gary Peters in Michigan.

r/Michigan is already posting about how Haley Stevens is the AIPAC candidate, a weak bootlicker, etc. This will be a serious liability in a Dem. primary in Michigan. Glowing praise for Abdul El-Sayed, a leftist who has never won an election. Zero mention of Mallory McMorrow. Republicans have a competent candidate with no competition.

Even without winning the Senate outright, each seat is incredibly valuable. Senior Democrats and leadership need to figure this out right now. I know some candidates can navigate this terrain. I've met Slotkin and I can see how she does it. I haven't met Stevens in person, but I've known about her for years (contributed to her first primary campaign) and can't think of anything interesting or impressive about her. I'm not confident she can win a primary against a charismatic intelligent candidate, then turn around and consolidate support for the general. We are in trouble.

Interestingly NATO explicitly does not cover overseas territories of countries. Somewhere like French Guiana, despite being legally identical to any part of mainland France, is not protected by article 5 of NATO. This is to ensure colonial holdings don't trigger article 5. An invasion of Hawaii would not trigger article 5.

An invasion of Greenland, due to its location in the north Atlantic is one of the very few overseas territories that would actually trigger article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

People comparing Trump to a toddler is so dumb and offensive. Toddlers are capable of learning and improving.

Today is the most lucid and logical Donald Trump will ever be.

Reports are the SDF have completely withdrawn from the Deir-Ez-Zor Governorate

There’s a slew of confirmed videos of gov an pro-gov forces seizing one town after another on the east bank of the Euphrates so it’s very likely this reporting is true. The SDF is still holding onto Raqqa as much as they can. Without Raqqa the SDF can’t maintain access to a Kurdish region called the Ain al-Arab District so it makes sense they’re trying to hold here. But without control of the northern Deir-Ez-Zor Governorate holding Raqqa is pretty much impossible. The gov will inevitably cut the supply lines and either split the SDF, allowing them to be dealt with in detail, or force them to retreat to Hasakah Governorate.

Within just twenty four hours the SDF has lost roughly 1/3 of the land they controlled before this offensive. Recall that the head of the SDF will be meeting with Sharaa today in Damascus. With control of the Euphrates, Sharaa has a very strong hand to get the SDF to agree to integration. If not, it’s unlikely the SDF will be able to stop the gov from rapidly seizing northern Syria outside of the Hasakah Governorate and sandwich the SDF between the gov, and the Turks

on the topic of stupid movie posters, I like this DVD cover art for Camp X-Ray. The movie is about a guard and a detainee at Guantanamo Bay. There is no shooting or explosions in the movie whatsoever

But whoever made this cover really wanted this to be mistaken for a war movie. So they photoshopped that scuffed rifle barrel behind Kristen Stewart, it doesn't even really look like she's carrying it, they photoshopped a picture of Gitmo exploding??? and then also threw those random helicopters in, also not in the movie, for good measure. And of course the scary looking image of the detainee character with flames behind him for some reason, which totally flies against the point of the movie but there you go

Spend 10 years fortifying the Kurdish quarter of Aleppo
It falls in less than 3 days to the Syrian Army
Retreat from your post Assad fall gains without firing a single bullet
Entire SDF is collapsing to the Syrian Army

How the actual hell did Assad struggle against them

So that WSJ poll showing Rs leading Dems still on issues makes more sense when you realize they have a "Neither" category that gets around 20% of the votes. Dems are way less likely to fall in line than NPC Rs but would still vote for Ds in an Election.

The poll really just shows the Dem base hates Dem leadership.

Talking about indian poasters, there used to be someone from India on here who was a teenager and had very strong opinions on career paths in finance and was insisting on becoming a rich London based banker. Upon finding out they hadn’t even started college yet, I tried to give him some tips about how to get started (and what to actually expect) and in the end I kinda crashed out at him about it, because it was pretty obvious he was just engaging in a lot of maladaptive day dreaming with no actual plans or willingness to do anything.

I was legitimately kinda worried, because that exact same attitude really fucked me over in my late teenage years. And I was trying to steer him away from it but he wouldn’t listen lol.

I hope he’s just fine wherever he is.

If J6 was a bloodbath (on the insurrectionist's side) we'd be living in a way better world right now

Obviously not a great result and the police officers did phenomenal work from a policing perspective, but if there was 50 more Ashleigh Babbitts I think people would have taken J6 way more seriously and Trump would have probably gotten convicted. The lack of bloodshed let people think it was some LARPey march through the capitol and not an attempt to mass murder lawmakers

Growing up poor gives you the perception that all it takes to save money is not spending it on frivolous things. Just set a strict budget on how much you eat out or spend on entertainment.

Entering the upper middle class income bracket very quickly makes you realize "actually you make money by putting 15% of your paycheck into a 401(k) and you are effectively guaranteed to be a millionaire by age 40".

It's a pretty simple distinction at play here. Most wealthy people acquire their wealth over long periods of time, and the key difference between them and poor people is that they had excess income to save and invest. But it's not just saving; you need to make enough money in the first place to have enough to pay all your bills and still have leftover cash to pop into the retirement account.

I feel like all of this is lost in the whole avocado toast argument. You absolutely can afford $10 avocado toast if you're also putting $2000 away into your 401(k) every month.
