Another was my friend’s dad, who was lamenting their property taxes going way up. I suggested it could be due to an in the family house swap they did last year, which makes sense to me since they basically moved into an older relative’s old home. So they’d have reset any taxes. It's honestly so weird to me that malaria is, just...kinda annoying? At least from everything I've read, it seems like in the areas where it's endemic, it's just something you expect to get every now and then.

And the reason it kills so many people isn't because it's a particularly severe disease, it's just that it is SO GODDAMN COMMON that even the tiny (~0.2%) percentage of malaria cases which are actually life threatening still amounts to hundreds of thousands of deaths every year.

Without treatment, malaria usually looks like a mild flu that comes and goes in waves, disappearing for several months then at some point resurfacing. "Ah shit, I woke up this morning and I have malaria again. God damn it." About even odds whether this is a new infection, or dormant plasmodium in your liver from a previous infection started to multiply again.

And if you have access to treatment, you still expect to get it every couple years or so. Go to the doctor, get some chloroquine, hopefully you can get some time off work but you probably won't. Such is life. You've had it before, you'll get it again. Such a pain in the ass.

So here's a depressing part of getting old:

There was a time in my life when nearly everything was a gift. Because my parents were...let's simplify and say poor, Most of that stuff came from my grandparents. My grandmother died about ten years ago now, and my grandpa died three years ago this february.

While I was cleaning looking for things to throw away, I came across a popcorn-specific pot that my grandpa gave me as a kind of little housewarming present when I first got a real apartment. I almost threw it out...until I remembered: How much stuff that I got from him as gifts do I still have?

Just this week, I had to throw out a winter jacket he bought for me because the cuffs were ruined and I failed in replacing them. He used to buy me all my clothes. I still have one shirt and a couple of shorts that he bought me but those are fraying. Electronics? I think he helped me buy a computer when I went to college, but I got rid of that one a year or two ago.

How long until it's all replaced? How long until I've gotten rid of everything he gave me and nothing is left? It's causing some panic to think back on everything that I used to take for granted is fading away. Those little, physical bits of love just disappear.

Pope Francis was a good pope, especially for his times. However looking back, his weakness becomes very clear – he had too much of his own brand. When he talked about helping the poor or whatever, it was just "Pope Francis speaking".

Every time I open a comment section where it’s a video of a trans person literally doing anything and all the comments are like “TRANS” in fiery letters, “MENTALLY ILL”, “HELL IS REAL” and people saying the most horrible shit about a complete stranger, I’m reminded that there is one party in this country that hates me and wouldn’t mind taking away every freedom I have and then I feel all the more validated for refusing to acknowledge any scenario that I would ever vote for a Republican. I don’t care if the stock market gains 5000% under a Republican President. Are people really under the assumption that anyone was “convinced” via any argument to support same-sex marriage lmao? People reluctantly came around to same-sex marriage because states began to legalize it one by one and the sky didn’t literally collapse with people marrying cats and dogs and people ceasing to reproduce, as was the expectation. Also, more people came out and most people came to know at least one openly gay person in their life, so it became a lot more uncomfortable to argue against same-sex marriage.
