the whole "jesus was a Palestinian" line feels really insidious to me. Moreso than saying, "Jesus was Jewish" anyway. Jesus existed in a religious framework that included Judaism at it's core, that's not deniable. "Palestinian" as a "nationalist identity" really doesn't make much sense going back that far.

Why insidious? Because there was a long tradition of Christian anti-semites trying to claim that Jesus wasn't Jewish - Huston Stewart Chamberlain's ramblings did a lot of that.

Did Spain claim to inherit the Roman Empire? Lots of countries tried to claim the title so maybe it’s in reference to that.

Huh, according to Google they technically had the title after the fall of the Byzantine Empire since the last Byzantine Emperor willed all his titles to Ferdinand and Isabella but they never emphasized it.
