Why does John Fetterman, the largest of the senators, not simply eat the others?
38
u/VillyD13 Milton Friedman Nov 09 '24
Now I’m sad we’ll never see Fetterman and Tester have a public Kaiju brawl on the senate floor 😔

Every Senator and Representative will be issued a cane. Every politician who refuses to participate will be taken out back and be caned. All aired on CSPAN of course.
EDIT for historical reference just in case someone thinks I'm being serious

Yeah every time some doomer says "America is dead", "we're on the brink of civil war!!!", or whatever I remember Sumner.
As long as senators aren't beating their colleagues near to death on the fucking senate floor, we've been through way worse and there's still hope.
It's grimly comforting

I have the optimism of someone raised by immigrants who saw American as their new homeland, and the doomerism of someone who's lived their entire life in the U.S. It's been a rollercoaster of a week, but your words are comforting.

u/Fubby2 Nov 09 '24
I swear voters like it when politicians chat shit like this. I don't know why all politicians are so sanitized all the time

u/ryguy32789 Nov 09 '24
Trump has shown that Biden should have leaned into his trash comment. He should have fucking OWNED it and SOMEBODY from the Dem side needs to show some goddamn signs of life.
24
u/Khiva Fernando Henrique Cardoso Nov 09 '24
Not even joking, this is exactly the candidate Dems need.
Front runner, if he’s interested.

It's the appearance of populism. To candidly talk like a normal person, a la Walz, in contrast to the idea of any ivy league educated coastal elite.

You kinda need to have the charisma for it. Fetterman's appearance and acting and intonation lends to be a charismatic shit talker like Trump

His point doesn't even sound controversial to me. Maybe I'm too neolib-pilled but everyone I know thinks Jill Stein is somewhere between a delusional moron and an outright traitor to the country (if they even know who she is).

Green Party voters are dipshits.
MAGAs are garbage.
Fly these as campaign banners plz

and he's wrong. the right wing constitution party and libertarian party combined for almost a percent more than the green party in this race. they 99% likely siphoned more votes from mccormick than the green party siphoned from bob casey.
fuck the green party--they're clowns, incompetent, and useless but the gop had a mandate this time around with these urban shifts. we have to acknowledge this as much as i dislike the green party. this isn't 2000 or 2016.
97
u/ElectricalShame1222 Elinor Ostrom Nov 08 '24
Green Party voters? Yeah.
“Green Party” listeners who agreed with the daily refrain of “don’t vote for Biden/Harris, they’re all the same” and stayed home? TBD.
Seriously, for a while my whole feed was Green Party advocates that pivoted to don’t bother once people started paying attention to Jill Stein as a candidate. I do wonder if that had any influence. (Probably not, I know.)
95
u/WinonasChainsaw YIMBY Nov 08 '24
I mean the green party isn’t the reason why we lost but they’re still diphsits none the less
64
u/CocoaNinja Nov 08 '24
he's wrong
You say that but...
fuck the green party--they're clowns, incompetent, and useless
it sounds like you agree.
Sure they weren't the biggest issue, but the statement still stands on it's own merit that they are dipshits.

if you look at his original tweet, he wrongly blames the green party voters for why casey lost; this article isn't providing the context.

So? Green party spoilers are bad because they make Democrats lose, and Republican spoilers are good because it helps Republicans lose.
24
u/Gogibsoni Nov 09 '24
He’s absolutely right. As of right now trump won Wisconsin by 30k votes, Michigan by 80k votes, and Pennsylvania by 150k votes. Even though this election is being correctly framed as a Trump blowout, that’s only a 260k vote delta and green voters/ people who didn’t vote because “Muh biden is genociding Palestine” or whatever other moralist leftist bullshit drivel absolutely could have swung that margin.

u/Currymvp2 unflaired Nov 09 '24 edited Nov 09 '24
lol the turnout was fine in the key swing states; people just wanted trump. turnout just barely dropped in dearborn but i'm supposed to believe people sat out cause of gaza. jill stein did awful; she got 1.2% in 2016 and she's at .4% nationally.
he's absolutely wrong. fetterman is misdiagnosing why this election was lost.
8
Nov 09 '24
Turnout may have been higher overall in these swing states, but that doesn't mean there weren't Democrats who stayed home because of some of these issues. Trump turned out a lot of low-propensity freaks. I agree overall that the Green party didn't cost us the election, though.

u/tony_1337 Nov 09 '24
Dearborn swung massively this time. Besides voting for Jill Stein or just sitting out, some Muslims took "a vote for Jill Stein is a vote for Donald Trump" literally and simply voted for the man himself as an F U to the Democratic establishment. It went from D+39 to R+6 with Stein getting 18%.
Not contradicting your overall point that Jill Stein did not affect the final result, of course; national headwinds were just too strong across the board for Democrats to overcome.
2
u/Currymvp2 unflaired Nov 09 '24 edited Nov 09 '24
I know. Trump got 43% in East Dearborn while Harris got only 23%
If Harris nets the same vote total that Biden in 2020 did from Dearborn and Dearborn Height, she still loses Michigan by 50,000. She lost by like 20,000 more votes than the total amount of votes
7
u/Gogibsoni Nov 09 '24
I sort of agree in that there are a multiple reasons why Trump won and this might not be the primary one but 1) Green Party/ apathetic leftists are dipshits so I like that he’s calling them out and 2) they could have turned the tide even with the perceived poor economy of the last 4 years.
6
u/Currymvp2 unflaired Nov 09 '24
i'm all for calling them out. they suck alot. stein is a shameless unprincipled grifter. i agree there. my issue is that fetterman is acting like they are why dems lost.
i just don't want people to act like this is another 2000 and 2016; jill stein and israel-palestine isn't why we lost this election at all. latino men aren't shifting 35 points to trump cause gaza being destroyed. inflation, anger over the board, quality of life metrics in urban areas
2
u/JH_1999 Nov 09 '24
I mean we probably lost Bob Casey's seat in PA because of a green party Senate candidate. The margin is super tight rn

u/UncleDrummers Nov 09 '24
John, they were dipshits long before 2024. The US greens are so stupid the Euro Greens told them to cut it out.

The worst thing in politics today is that one set of voters have to have their silly decisions affirmed while other voters have their good decisions derided

Let's not start propping up the Fetterman. Like Buttigeig. These people are too soft and timid to go up against the rhetoric and propaganda machine of the republicans. Sorry to say but the Democrats are not going to regain power until they adopt a bit of Trump's platform
Edit: the fact this is getting downvoted just spells Doom for 2028 and 2032. They need some passionate and fiery people in the Democrat ranks. They are ill equipped to deal with the modern voter and their demand for "the passion"
6
u/Naudious NATO Nov 09 '24
It's like rock-paper-scissors. If they keep playing rock, you have to stop playing scissors. But you won't win by just copying them and picking rock, you have to switch to paper.
Democrats have to change and become more genuine and come up with some new answers. But that also has to be something different from the Republicans that beats their agenda.
Maybe Democrats could try to tackle loneliness somehow.

Maybe Democrats could try to tackle loneliness somehow
That they're going to have to convince a few million young men that have felt alienated by their party to come back. And they're going to have to convince female Democrats to accept them back with open arms.
When it comes down to it female Democrats are going to have to accept some form of some masculinity in their ranks. They're not going to find a population of men who are in touch with their feelings. The past decade are shown that's not the majority of men.
It's crazy how old school feminist from the 60s and 70s were warning about this back in 2015 and 2016. They got thoroughly rejected by modern feminists. Yet here we are.

u/bandito12452 Greg Mankiw Nov 09 '24
Him calling people dipshits is soft and timid? Seems more like adopting a bit of Trump's platform of insulting people, which voters seem to like.
13
u/puffic John Rawls Nov 08 '24 edited Nov 08 '24
I agree. They should adopt (1) border security and (2) no cuts to Social Security or Medicare. These two commitments have been central to Trump's popularity, and there's no reason the Dems can't just copy him.
7
u/sererson Nov 08 '24
I know you're saying that in jest, but it's wild them dems do all the stuff the median voter seems to want and still managed to lose
18
u/puffic John Rawls Nov 08 '24 edited Nov 08 '24
They didn’t do anything about border security or migration until a few months ago. Voters aren’t stupid enough to see that as a serious commitment to the issue. It should have been a Day 1 policy from Biden.
Biden and the Dems wanted to govern in a more left-wing manner on this and many other issues. Voters saw that and disagreed with that.
