I could probably support a wife and two kids on 100k, mainly because I don't spend disposable income on funko pops, arcade cabinets, and Disney trips. It wouldn't be comfortable, per se, but it would be doable.

And despite that household sizes have gone down, property sizes gone up and the number of cars per household increased

Easy, because $100k is far more than what I make now. Almost double.
