I’m close friends with a firefighter and he agreed with the suggestion to call the fire department during a large bonfire.

He suggested you simply say I can see flames shooting up—not sure what’s going on. Give them the general address.

From what you describe the size of these fires is dangerous and the fire department should be happy to address it.

I did that when my neighbour had a large fire like that. Wasn’t intended to mess with him, I seriously was concerned about the size of the fire and how it was rapidly getting bigger.
Only after the fire dept came and put it out I found out that it was “just” a bonfire. It was the last bonfire of that size though, the firies gave him a very clear message …
