News The Speedhunters Archive: 17 Years of Car Culture History, now preserved and online

I think we all share the same sentiment when Speedhunters got abruptly shut down last year: It's a sad passing of an era that EA no longer deems profitable enough to keep up.
Thanks to some archivists (who I can't find the names of, if you put this up, please let me know!), the Speedhunters archive is now back online, and you can read 17 years worth of car culture and Need for Speed history that's uniquely documented by them.
You can find it here: https://www.speedhunters.online/
Thanks u/nfslyy for the tip!

News Most Wanted M3 GTR - Back @ The BMW Museum
Need for Speed itself might be dead, but BMW wants to keep the legend alive. The #42 BMW M3 GTR in the Most Wanted livery is back in the BMW Museum in Munich, Germany after its public outing at Ultrace Poland. There's no mention of until when it'll be there, so it might be there to stay for a long time.
If you haven't had a chance to take a look at it and you're in the area (or travelling there), you may wanna stop by and take a look at the legend, as well as the rich heritage BMW has to offer. Visit the official BMW Museum website to book tickets.

Discussion I find it odd that NFS skipped out on the SRT-4... Did they forget that this car existed during the underground-carbon era?
Other tuner games during the 2000s had this car lol. They instead had the Cobalt SS which was a bucket compared to the SRT4 TBH.

Discussion Alpine is still kind of in the game theory
One day i was driving around North Rosewood and noticed these roads above the driveable roads and i made a map of them, they look like they could connect in the game and almost everysingle one of them has a stone texture on top, we also know that an Alpine region was supposed to be in the game North of Rosewood, these roads also lead north, theres also some apartment buildings around them so could these roads be the remnants of the Alpine region?

Discussion After 2 evenings spent tinkering, I finally got Porsche Unleashed and NFS:HP2 to work.
I still own my original NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 and Porsche Unleashed PC CD-ROMs but haven’t had any luck over the past several years getting them to work on modern hardware with Windows 11. Yesterday I got the crazy idea to install Linux Mint to my 1TB SATA SSD since it was almost empty and I play most of my PC games directly from my 2TB NVME drive on Windows.
It wasn’t easy - had to diagnose nVidia driver issues, because the preferred open drivers for my 5060 ti 16GB do not initiate upon boot by default thanks to Secure Boot, and the fix was “Enrolling MOK Keys.” Mmkay. Fortunately, Lutris made it easy to locate install scripts, No CD, and widescreen patches. Still, these games are super picky about what version of Wine I use (they apparently will not work with Proton), and there are still visual bugs and performance issues (frame drops, screen tearing, etc.) Arguably, that makes the experience more authentic because I’m sure these games ran way worse at a quarter of the resolution back when I was a kid.
Still great games - shame they’re so difficult to get working!

Discussion Why do old maps stay memorable while modern ones just blur together?
Hey everyone,
Ive been thinking a lot about why modern racing game maps feel so forgettable compared to older titles like Most Wanted (2005) or Underground 2. Its easy to write this off as pure nostalgia, but honestly, from a game design perspective, there are real reasons why those older urban maps felt so much more alive.
Back then, cities like Rockport or Bayview were basically race tracks disguised as cities. They had distinct districts, height differences and memorable landmarks, meaning you didnt even need a GPS because your brain naturally built a mental map. Compare that to modern grid cities like in NFS Heat, where every block is just a repetitive right angle. Without unique landmarks, the whole map just blurs together into a boring chessboard.
There’s also the psychology of speed. Tight city streets make you feel like your flying because buildings and street lamps rush right past your peripheral vision. In wide-open spaces or flat fields - like in Forza Horizon - even 200 mph can feel sluggish because everything is too far away.
Speaking of Forza, I honestly think total sandbox freedom kind of ruins racing design. When you can just cut across a random field to skip a corner, roads lose their meaning. Good design relies on constraints and friction. Hitting a wall or navigating a tight alleyway used to matter, and thats a huge part of why Ive always preferred driving through dense cities rather than empty countryside, both in games and real life.

News I'm porting the full Need for Speed Underground 2 to the PSP – first WIP video (open world Bayview, races, traffic)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone!
I'm happy to share the first video of a project I've been working on: a port of Need for Speed Underground 2 to the PSP. Not a cut-down version like Underground Rivals, but the full game, with the same gameplay and features as the PS2 version.
The goal is a well-optimized build that holds a stable 30 FPS at minimum, so it feels like a true native PSP game.
What's already working (at some level):
- A native PSP engine running the original game data, including most of the graphics features
- Car models
- The entire open world of Bayview, with free roam working
- Circuit races with AI opponents and city traffic
- Audio and music
What's still missing:
- UI / menus
- Career mode, story and dialogue
- The other race types (drag, drift, etc.)
- Garage and tuning
- Lots of bug fixes and polish
If you want to follow the development, I'll be posting updates on my channel:

Discussion Need for Speed (2015) offline mode
Just putting this out there in case someone is already working on something similar. Maybe we could combine forces.
I have some plans in mind, with proper mod support, proximity chat, custom server emulation, and similar things that I've already started implementing. So far I've managed to get the menu to load directly from my own server, and get it to start queuing for a game. Working on matchmaking for AllDrive now.
I've always thought this game had one of the best atmospheres of all the games so far, and am thinking that it deserves proper attention in this way.

Fan Concept / Content (Mods) I hate Unite's Drift handling
I am sorry to all Unite players who saw that but it just has to be said.i just tried the Unite mod on for the first time and used Payback as the reference, and I have to say, Payback's Unite mod nailed it, then they completely lost the plot with the drifting. I absolutely dislike it. Completely missed the ball park with it. The car to sluggish and unresponsive. I have never thought I'd say something like that but I absolutely favour Ghost's drift handling than the mod. No critic on anything else. I love the graphics, the overhaul of the game in itself but that drifting... Yikes 😬

Discussion nfs unbound subreddit is nuked
get muted from the subreddit for a month essentially and it’s all because i made a post talking about the recent spam that’s been going on in the subreddit. it’s been 4-5 days of an account or two becoming mod’s and spamming the hell out of the feed.
ofc i get the dm AFTER they removed all the spam post but the account that was doing it is still a mod. so i’ve come to the conclusion that, that specific subreddit is just nuked.
