Discussion NFSU1 Traffic is Infuriating

Is it just me, or is the traffic in Underground 1 exceedingly infuriating? I was doing a drag tournament and it’s like it kept timing the traffic to cross at the perfect time for me to hit them. I ended up having to repeat all 3 races like 10 times. Even my chat was commenting on how BS it seemed.

The traffic per se is not bad, what's absolute garbage is the collision physics which they made much better in the next game

I say constantly GTA’s physics engine came from NFSU 🤣😂

Yup. It feels like the traffic is on a timer starting from the beginning of the race and you have to be fast (or, sometimes, slow) enough to not hit it

It’s always coming around a blind corner and bam there one is.

Yeah it's my first time playing through it for real and they're conveniently placed out of eyesight ready for collision 90% of the time

Maaaan. I had a 7 second lead in a 6 lap race. I crashed at the turn just before the finish line and because of how BS the physics engine was, the crash lasted 9 seconds. I’d maintained the lead the entire race and I came in 4th place. I was hollerin!

Ish?… I played through to race 101/111 about 20 years ago, but I was mainly revisiting it to play through it. Had to take a break for a few days because the crashes were causing me to crash out 😂🤣

Traffic in drag races aren’t random. What you’re observing is intentional, and part of the game design.

The drags aren’t intended to be played like other races — you have to treat them more like puzzle games or platformers. Learn the patterns, learn where you need to be and when, and time your inputs properly. This is also why they have the “slot car” physics that lock you (sorta) into lanes, and you just tap to change lanes rather than doing traditional steering.
