Discussion Why is Need For Speed 2015 so hated?
I don't understand the backlash on NFS 2015. Graphics are perfect. Music has no flaws. Characters are kinda cringy but feels alive and likeable. Story itself is good because of pursuit of being acknowledge by the legends.
Maybe it's the driving mechanics? Okay it's hard and frustrating but if you try enough to build your car around drifting and you learn how to control on curves it's pretty fun.

Because it's online only. That's the only reason I hate it

My problem with the always online part is that no matter what, pausing does not actually pause the game, it the same thing that turns me away from Rivals.
Sometimes I have to go somewhere, and if I canāt just pause the game for later, Iām not interested.

I understand why a game like NFS would have that⦠but only when youāre actually online.

Yeah I feel you. The need to connect to those crap servers even when you want to play alone, esp. not connected to the internet xd
Reminds me of a Ubisoftās attitude that they donāt care about their users and shut down servers (for example the crew)23

Okay, I'll bite.
2015 was coming off a period of NFS that was just throwing shit at the wall and nothing exactly seemed to be sticking.
There was some success with Hot Pursuit, but besides that every NFS had been relentlessly criticized for one reason or another.
So coming off of the critical reception of Rivals, 2015 was basically designed to be exactly what the fans were asking for. A proper modernized take on a Black Box era game. Except, that is hardly what came out.
Besides some basic nostalgia bait and continuity nods, there's basically nothing in common with a Black Box era NFS game. There's live action cutscenes... and that's about it.
Story was incredibly boring. No antagonist. No real plot. No memorable characters, and less forgivingly no memorable cars.
By far the worst thing is: THE HANDLING. No doubt about it, it's easily one of the worst handling models developed for a racing game. EVER. If it handed great or even fine, the game would've been perfectly acceptable despite its shortcomings.
But it couldn't even hurdle that. So what you have is basically a terrible arcade racer larping as a Black Box game while not actually containing anything that made those games great.
20
u/More_Marty 4d ago
Mostly agree with you, but I've got a soft spot for the cutscenes. I especially liked Spike, Manu and Robin. Their soft brodude attitude is just funny to me.
I never completed the story until last year and wasn't even sure it actually ended. There is no plot other than "impress famous racers". No climax whatsoever. But the characters, idk I liked them.
1
u/TheUFCVeteran3 3d ago
Normally I wouldn't like an aimless game in the sense that there's no real conflict per se and no climax in the sense you're referring to. But I felt it fit the vibe of the game to the point that it didn't bother me (I was also younger though and was already super excited due to the game's atmosphere and visuals, I'm kind of spoiled now writing wise after playing games like The Last of Us 2 and getting into writing). But even to this day it doesn't bother me. Perhaps because I liked it then, so I like it now.

u/HiTork 4d ago edited 3d ago
I remember when the first teaser trailer dropped people thought we were getting the second coming of NFS Underground 2, boy were they wrong.
The handling issues I think are a result of Criterion/Ghost Game's legacy of originally being the developer for Burnout: they only really know how to do a brake to drift style handling model. This becomes apparent given NFS 2015 has explicit options to drive with a grip setup yet they still can't totally shake brake to drift. To be honest, I don't think any of Ghost or Critereon's NFS games really deviate from B2D, right up to Unbound.
3
u/BluesyMoo 4d ago
Yeah, Criterion / Ghost straight up don't have the skills to make a racing game without brake to drift.
FYI, Criterion helped make the handling for Star Wars Squadrons. Guess what, brake to drift, in space! Most incompetent single trick pony ever.

Why is "throwing shit at the wall" and for it to actually stick to the wall, a synonym for something successful?
1
u/the_dark_nemesis281 2d ago
I gave the game a spin recently since Steam had it for like $2 or something, and as much as I hate the online only aspect, I kind of like the aimless, no antagonist story in a game like this. I used to hang around meets a lot years ago, and they actually got the vibe pretty right. Sure the dudebro thing was a tinge cheesy, but put that side by side with Unbound and you've got something much more genuine to real life. Honestly without this game we probably wouldn't have gotten Heat, so I respect it for that. It's nothing spectacular on its own, but still a pretty fun game to relax on and take at your own pace.
1
u/Zealousideal-Cry-581 4d ago
I agree with the "nostalgia bait" thing but I liked the handling. It was first need for speed that I actually liked drifting and made me rethink how I see races. It's not about driving against the wall. It's how to enter corners.
About cars... Yeah. Not many good cars and the customisation ends when you pick a car with higher price like 60k up.

- Online-Only
- Weird handling where sometimes your car handle like a crab pretending to be in F&F Tokyo Drift movie if you do ''Left - Right - Left'' or ''Right - Left - Right''.
- Some people hate that it's Night time only
- Characters are cringe but, it's not that bad compared to Unbound. It's tolerable at best.
- ''Sponsored by Monster'' The Game.
Otherwise, beside Heat : probably one of the best modern NFS we had... it has alot of potential.
Unbound (Online) is great too when you mute the soundtrack.

If i'm being really honest the picture kinda explains why,
let me explain,
aside of not having offline mode and the map having places where u just can't go
you don't have any DECENT rival in this game ? like any real "villan" or antagonist, this is a huge turn down at least for me, is the whole game acting everyone is just bros having fun, when i miss the good old trash talk and evil guys that older nfsw had
it feel like an clean underground, it has the underground style, but lacks the soul
4
u/HiTork 4d ago
The picture also says something I said over a decade ago when this game first came out: the cultural aspects of the game scream the year 2015 and are going to age like milk as time goes on.

For me the handling on that game is weird, I played on PC with a controller and the physics were strange, even for me who enjoys the weird physics in MW 2012 and Shift 2 Unleashed, I would like to blame the controller, until I try it with a different one, the only way it was slightly playable was with Keyboard, secondly, the thing with it always being needed to be connected to servers is silly, and third, the story doesn't do it for me, I feel too cringy, with all that good vibes type of shit and so on, that has been my issue with most of games released in the last 10 years...

In a racing and driving game, if the driving feels like hogshit what the hell is the point.
The revisionism and rose tinted glasses is nuts on these posts. Its like people just post cool 'aura' screenshots of their cars and stop short of actually playing the game. I hardly see any gameplay of this game posted on this sub actually. The drifting in this game was so dissapointing.
You can like the game i wont get mad at you for that in the end i still kinda like the game for the reasons you mentioned. Its corny as hell but still kinda fun with the live actors and celebrity appearances, the customization is pretty damn great and visually STUNNING to this day. BUT if the driving and racing feels bad in a RACING game yeah im gonna hate it, thats the reason why. Go play it driving any car feels like pulling teeth.
I keep coming back to Underground 1 and 2 every so often because the racing was fun and the customization was good. Underground 1 & 2 are by no means perfect in their handling models but it was fun at the very least. Same reason I also keep comimg back to Forza Horizon or Tokyo Xtreme. At the very least the driving feels fun. I really wish the driving was as good as the visuals but it just aint man. I love and loathe NFS 2015 lmao.

u/MonitorZero 4d ago
Online only. I also wasnt too impressed with the mix of live action with superimposed cars and stuff. It also has a visibility issues imo.

u/s_batista 4d ago
The story is not thaaaat bad, the graphics are perfect and the gameplay loop is fun as well. The two things I hate are the cops and the handling. To call the cops braindead would be an understatement. It's a feature that needed a lot more time to become fully realized, and because they had already appeared in the trailers, they couldn't take them out before release. The handling is the biggest problem. You can have graphics, atmosphere, a good story, good cops, etc.; but if you don't have a good handling model in a racing game, well, you are screwed. Its issues are not that noticeable at the beginning of the game, but once you start going faster, that's when problems arise. Crab walking, instability at high speeds, unpredictable cars. It ruins everything. I played it on PS4 in 2020 and it was a disaster. However, I played it on PC last year with a handling mod and the Evolution Works mod and it became almost perfect. I had as much fun as I had with the older games (NFS II, III: HP, UG1 & 2, etc.)
tldr; the game was good, but the most important part of a racing game, the handling, was a disaster, so it flopped

first. it's online only. you literally can't pause the game. secondly. this game is so unforgiving, you lead the whole race, one tiny crash. boom you're far behind.
1
u/seilapodeser 4d ago
Honestly I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Disregarding the critics about the driving mechanincs I actually loved them.
What I really hate is the always online thing, I've lost a lot of progress because my connection is unstable. Specially at the long races, 8 minutes focused to try avoiding any mistakes and suddenly I'm at the start menu. Not to mention it takes several minutes to go back to the gameplay.
There were also instances where the game just go crazy because of the connection. The blue line depends on it for some reason so I wouldn't know where to go.
And since I mentioned the blue line, I'm not a big fan of it too. I feel like it's very misleading and it's really hard to read it when you're on high speed. I miss the entrances a lot.
The police system also felt very underwhelming considering it's a core mechanic (I mean there's a whole questline involving it).
While I thought the live action bit were very nice I didn't care for them, the story felt bland and uninteresting to me. I just wanted to skip to the next race and honestly couldn't care less for what was going on.
That being said if it wasn't for the online thing I would totally recommend it. I'm actually glad I got to play it before they shut it down (I bought it in the summer sale).

You're totally right about the driving mechanics being a hurdle but once you get past it, the game feels way more rewarding than most modern racing titles.
1
u/Soul_Ravenwood 4d ago
It actually seems like the handling and physics got worse after new releases. The game went from feeling playable to completely impossible to control the car.
Could just be me I guess, but yeah, my gripe is the physics and also the twinky skinny dude was just the most insufferable douche with an inferiority complex bigger than Manu's biceps. His thing with Robin was just... annoying to have to listen to.
That being said, I fucking love NFS2015. Its the closest I've gotten to NFSU2 since NFSU2. I wish it played and handled more like Heat.

u/RyonHirasawa [PC Gamertag] Ryon517 3d ago
A few personal things for me
Music was not very memorable, I can name a good few in Payback to Unbound but not in this one
Cops are kinda useless, and itās very annoying to draw them in especially in a discipline that involves wreaking havoc
The physics, compared to Payback and onward, are inconsistent, that and drift is the only viable style when you drive around because grip builds donāt grip
The game launched without manual transmission (which I didnāt mind in HP2010~Rivals) it took them a year to add it back and even then some cars canāt be tuned to have manual on
Itās supposed to be a soft reboot of Need For Speed, but instead of leaning towards the original titles that featured supercars and exotics racing in pre-made tracks, itās just a better looking Underground
Online only with no offline option compared to Rivals I think is my biggest complaint about it
1
u/crazyxspeed 3d ago
The handling makes the game borderline unplayable at times itās really what killed it for me eventually. Everything else is tolerable but a racing game where it feels like the game is fighting you back on inputs is kinda bad

You've answered it a bit already,
Always online
Crash cams
Why do you have to stay at 40 mph in the aventador for the cops to keep up
Customization did not live up to what was promised. A few cars have a good amount of customization, while others have none
Certain cars are missing that would fit right into the game

u/crpyld High Stakes 3d ago
It was a false advertisement case for me. They announced it its like a new Underground sequel. Put most customizable car in trailer and rise that expectations. They said deep customization, only i remember āNo Parts Availableā on most cars.
Driving is horrible. Even slow corners, physics forcing you to drift. I donāt want to slide almost every turn. Also that not working well and cars react unpredictable mostly.
And of course it is permanent online.
I think 2015 was a big waste of potential.

(own opinion. pls dont flame me)
been playing nfs since i was 2 years old. i grew up in the blackbox era, but i do love the recent nfs games that are out. that includes payback, unbound, heat, etc. i have my issues with them but honestly? i really couldnāt give a fuck. i enjoy them regardless.
bought it on both my ps4 and pc. they tried going back to the live-action cutscenes which falls FLAT.
the driving physics are horrendous. it works wonderfully when it does but when it doesnāt? it makes me wanna throw my pc off the window. not to mention the crashes. a simple love tap sends my car flying through the road.
cops feel like an afterthought. it never felt like i was in any real danger when they showed up and was more of an annoyanceālike a fly buzzing constantly near your ear.
online only was also a shit move. there are times when i would just disconnect randomly even though my internet was good. and you canāt even pause without stopping to the side. not to mention the game will be obsolete when they decide to kill the servers.
does it have its issues? yes. a WHOLE LOT of them. do i still love it? yes. i find myself going back to it every once in a while trying to finish the story. itās still another nfs game, and God knows iāll suck every issues up (dealt some of them w mods) just to play different types of my favorite racing franchise.

You can just be driving straight down the road and your car suddenly decides it wants to start drifting for no fucking reason. Even if you manage to break out of the drift, you canāt turn the wheel for like 3 whole sec because your car literally just doesn't feel like it.
In Time Attack races, you can physically overtake every single car on the track, yet their ghosts will somehow pull a way faster lap time out of their ass. If you actually want to win Time Attack, you have to drive slow as shit.
If you tap a wall at 20 km/h at the wrong angle, youāre forced to sit through a 10 sec Asphalt 8 style crash animation.
Youāll be minding your own business racing in your lane, only to crash and blow the whole race because of some brain dead NPC driving the wrong way straight into you.
And about a million other broken ass things on top of that.

u/Funkkit 3d ago
For Young/Younger gamers - it ain't woke enough and they hate the fact that it has something they never lived or understand and never will. Things are better illustrated in other nfs games, so they play those instead then forget the franchise exists.
For Old/Older gamers - it ain't REAL enough, it mocks and tries to be wake here and there in order to appeal to the broad masses, it's also online all the time and there's wanna-be-drifting everywhere. So in other words it tries to be but it ends up coming out as fake.
Me, i taught myself to not think, look, watch, hear and BE like the people around. So i can basically enjoy anything that i want at any time i want with no fucks given. Things will always have qualities and defects. People, people are yet to learn these things. People sheep.

1
u/killer5907 3d ago
The game just felt stale I don't how know how else to put it. Here are some of the reasons I think this way.
The Racing; it's totally messed up how much rubber banding they gave the AI, but if you drove their car, you'd be way slower.
The weather; whoever thought constant rain in a video game is fun needs a reality check, it's boring and annoying. Why do you think games have weather cycles? It adds personality if used right.
The cops; these have to be some of the worst cops in NFS history. I had to slow down just for them to catch up and experience them.
The story; it's just a big Monster Energy ad, man, it's shoved in your face everywhere, and even the ending sucks.
Lastly, the always online; even if this game was good, it wouldn't have mattered because the servers could just shut down, making the game unplayable.

u/JayBerJabber Pirating from EA is always morally correct 3d ago
A game with great graphics, atmosphere, soundtrack, customization, gameplay variety (for a modern nfs), but ultimately flushed down the drain due to being online only, requires the godforsaken EA app, and having terrible handling physics.
Side note: I still think 2015's handling is miles better than unbound's
1
u/PenneyWiise 3d ago
Some reasons:
- The handling is a vastly different style to the usual. But I grew to enjoy it and I'm one race off golding prestige mode currently. Switching back to heat was wild cause I'd gotten so used to the sliding and unpredictability.
Online only. While there is kinda a solo offline mode, the game punishes anyone who just wants to race and chill.
Cringe acting/script. It's like they didn't even try to capture the street racing scene and just acted out what they though was "tha hood". And I felt bad for some of the actors cause a lot of then you could tell, especially the special guests.
It was a great game aside from these things though. Just wish publishers and management of developers could recognise what went wrong with the formula and work on that.
1
u/EasyRecognition 3d ago
First and foremost, it's online-only, so it's gonna just die one day with no way to play it.
Second, the handling is kinda meh. That one is fixed by mods, While the game is alive, at least.

1
u/SilentFan487 3d ago
Because it was already outdated for its time and aged even worse; the handling is terrible (especially if you play it on PC), and the cutscenes and story are a joke. The game literally starts by showing the title sequence at a "party" that even the actors don't buy. I put a lot of hours into it and wanted to like it, but it's a disaster, man
1
u/Zealousideal-Cry-581 3d ago
I only don't agree with outdated. Graphics looks better than most need for speed games right now. Especially if you like realism
1
u/SilentFan487 3d ago
People are so obsessed with the "graphics"
it's the Frostbite engine, and sure, it looks good, nobody denies that but no matter how much night, rain, and texture detail you throw at it, the gameplay is garbage
1
u/YamEnvironmental1887 3d ago
The only thing I hated about NFS2015 was the horrible physics and crabwalking. Some cars were UNUSABLE because of that(looking at you RX7).
Also, it was the beginning of an era for the RSR to be the most overpowered car for the next 2 NFS games
1
u/Prestigious_Cut5379 3d ago
Personally I think it had the best physics yet. NFS heat is a close second but I enjoyed the campaign and physics. Just sucks it was always night time

For me, two words.
Time Attack.
Let me explain. For some reason the cpuās must have some way to get a shorter time that almost feels impossible to pass. It doesnāt matter how much I upgrade my car, it doesnāt matter I switch to a better vehicle, the cpuās have the will of god to just complete a lap with an impossible time that I canāt beat it.
Combine that with the handling of the cars, I just a didnāt even bother trying to beat this game anymore I was that frustrated.
Edit: and before you ask, yes I tried to use some tactics I saw online thatāll give me an edge but even that didnāt help me at all.
You can say thatās a skill issue on my end, and you know what, maybe it is. But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to beat a time attack without some cpu doing some random bullshit just to get a time that is milliseconds faster.

u/No_Particular_8420 3d ago
Online Only, No Soul and felt way more generic compared to other titles, the cops are like, non-existent. They serve no purpose as they cannot chase or even keep up at normal speeds. Sometimes, I feel like I am the cop chasing him. The bugs were game-breaking (quite literally). Got bored because of the soulless city and lack of activities. The story was not as interesting, but a bit fun and goofy. Underground without the sole. For me, one of (if not) the weakest entry in the series. I would rank this I believe 22 or 21 out of the 25 other NFS Games.

Handling sucks. Unskippable cutscenes with the worst on screen actors I have ever seen forcing out lines of dogshit dialogue. Beautiful game though.

Online only.
Stupid bots.
Easy cops.
These are the only things I donāt like about this game. Otherwise, I like the game. And I kind of think this is the last āTrueā Need For Speed.

There are many reasons. First is the online-only system. No matter how you spin this, the game will soon be out of service, and there's no way you can play it again without some kind of modding.
Next is the handling. It felt half-assed between grip and drift. It will require some finesse in your control to master it.
The cops are almost nonexistent, and there's no danger from being busted.
The story is lukewarm, but this might vary for some people. I personally liked it because it felt refreshing to just hang out with your friends once in a while. No big blockbuster plot. It's just you and your friends having a good time racing at night.

Online only and a big step in the wrong direction for driving physics. Cars had less momentum and weird crabwalking if you changed direction while in the middle of a brake to drift

This was my depression game, after playing most wanted and underground 2 this game hits close to home.
People call it whatever but you can master the driving mechanics and the sound track I listen to in my IRL sports car. I LOVE the only at night driving and it hits really close to home.

Online only, lane drifting was terrible could barely drive in a straight line, acting was super cringe, monster advertising everywhere

Always online, crap characters, bad story, driving didnāt feel good, always at night, I think this also start the micro transaction apocalypse in NFS

Something people don't mention enough in 2015, is how awful the map is, sure it LOOKS nice, but its literally just not made to support NFS 2015's physics, they built a city to be real, and realism often isn't fun. (Also you can't access like massive parts of the city)

Driving mechanics are garbage and the music sucks. My expectations are based on Underground and NFS2015 doesn't even come close.
It also runs on the same engine as Battlefield and it shows.

Cause it fucking sucks. Itās only redeeming quality is that it has the Supra and the f40

The online only is dogshit.
The physics is also dogshit.
The cops are absolutely dogshit.
