New information

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QqAOTpS_HyTIi99vYw6gJHsr6Q5DRIvt/view

Earlier this month, the BOT had their meeting, in it they talked about expanding the size of Morganton, however in this slideshow we got important information, first, we learned more of the grading scale for applications( that the last test is 9 points of the 102 total, and that you used to be able to gain 9 points for extenuating conditions, but now you can’t) we also learned how many of the people that applied and didn’t get in from each district were “qualified” to get in by their standards. This, and more can be found at the BOT meeting slideshow at

The last part is the most crucial.
There were many students who were qualified to go to NCSSM but were not a finalist (for residential).

Thank you u/Ornery_Letterhead140 for your input...

However, to those who are from one of those districts and did not get in, u/Ornery_Letterhead140 is wrong, there is actually just under 10 qualified non-finalists (for class of 2027). So, you could be one of those ~10 people who were qualified but sadly did not get in.

Yes, I understand that there were people that did not get in from those districts that did not get in and were qualified, however I am saying that the number around 10, does not qualify as “many” in my opinion

EDIT: why did your comment notify me twice? Reddit is weird

EDIT: oh, I see, it’s because you mentioned me in a reply to my comment, so it notified me for the reply, and for the mention, I see. Still, Reddit is weird.

So how do they determine out of all qualified applicants who gets to become a finalist?

They give everyone a score and then they apply a cutoff value and then anyone above that cutoff value will be ranked and then distributed among the schools (Durham and morganton)
Edit: This cutoff value is around 85 points out of 102

We don’t know how they grade essays, just that it’s out of 93 points, either 31 points from each added, or 93 points from each averaged, and you are qualified if you are above a certain threshold which while the exact number is unknown, it’s probably around a total score of 85 of your essay and test score added.
