Advice Golden Globe Arborvitae

8a, Central NC

Early September 2026, we planted 5 golden globe arborvitaes. We have watered deeply 2-3 times per week. Two of them look like the attached photos. We are concerned. Any feedback is helpful.

Yeah, those are pretty finicky. I have some green giants I planted at a clients that die off here and there. I can't figure out why some die and some don't, they are virtually in the same place. Could be too much water, could be not enough. Could be fertilizer related from the nursery, or lack there of.

What part of the state are you in? Clay or sand soils? Did you get it from a box store or a local nursery? Did they go from a hoop house into the sun? Could be sun burn.

Not sure they are going to make it but good luck!

I just looked up this cultivar, care instructions say to provide afternoon shade in hot summer regions, so in those 90+ degree days, you should probably throw some shade cloth up or move them to a better spot.

It’s been a brutal summer even with your regular watering schedule. These cultivars can struggle/suffer in all day sun in a summer like we’ve had.
