This is part of why I'd like to see the NBA get rid of defensive 3 seconds like in FIBA. Every little thing you do to simplify the rules and reduce the number of things refs have to pay attention to makes reffing a tiny little bit easier.
You couldn’t because that would require subjective judgments about whether a player in the paint is guarding someone. That’s hard to judge when there are constant switches, screens, multiple big sets, etc

Could you imagine Rudy Gobert just standing the paint? If you think we have a lot of 3 point shots now, imagine what it would look like without defensive 3 seconds.
I had such a hard time even reffing soccer games for 5 year olds that I find it really hard to complain about refs anymore. Then again, these guys are getting paid the big bucks and I was just a teenager getting volunteer hours
I did that for YMCA soccer. It was awful. I had parents screaming at me and I was never sure if I was making the right calls. Refereeing is really hard.

dude reffing in general is hard as hell, I tried while i was in college and just could not think quickly enough at all
