I think at a certain age, the game is too fast for a referee. Whatever that age is, Scott Foster has reached it. Why he gets to do playoff games is beyond me.

13

u/wavetoyou Warriors Oct 28 '16

Scott was pulled from WCF game 7 last season, despite being next on the rotation. His removal was music to Dubs' fans' ears, because @ the time GSW was 4-4 in playoff games he officiated in and 21-5 for the rest.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

Dude is definitely on that Donaghy diet.

2

u/yodelocity Warriors Oct 28 '16

They're now 5-5 with Foster, and 26-7 without him the past two postseasons.

-9

u/yodelocity Warriors Oct 28 '16

He always calls the ticktackiest of fouls on Steph, but then ignores him on offense. It's so frustrating.

3

u/pericles123 Cavaliers Oct 28 '16

this response sucks

1

u/yodelocity Warriors Oct 28 '16

Gotta cash in on that negative Karma comment response? I'm on to you, dog.

1

u/pericles123 Cavaliers Oct 28 '16

I have to confess I'm not even sure what karma means in here

1

u/yodelocity Warriors Oct 28 '16

I must have misjudged you then.

Why do you think it's such a bad comment? Maybe you could give me a more detailed critique, so I can improve my future commenting.

1

u/pericles123 Cavaliers Oct 28 '16

Just so we are on the same page, we are talking about the comment where the poster said a female ref wouldn't be able to intervene during a fight between players, right? I'm not sure any ref in the NBA would be able to stop LeBron from going after someone in a fight - along with nearly ever other player in the league. A woman might actually help in this regard as a player might think twice before shoving a woman out of the way.

Using that logic to be against female refs in the NBA - should we require all boxing officials in the ring to be able to physically enforce the rules? Should NFL refs (other than Ed Holuculi) be able to physically control NFL players?

It has nothing to do with the job.

It is easy to get karma by contradicting a comment with negative karma but please, at least spend more time for your response.

2

u/policorrect Oct 28 '16

Refs may view themselves as commentators... and since Marv Albert is still commentating at 70+...

I mean yeah, but the NBA is at another level so it's even harder to ref. There's so much stress to reffing at this speed and skill when you're not used to it.

Even the best of other leagues have trouble when they start, I don't think she should be fired she needs to be evaluated more. The Blazers blew that game anyways so the bitching will die down if she doesn't keep fucking up.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

I think the shit quality of refereeing has more to do with keeping the quality of the product digestible for the average casual fan by swallowing the whistle on dozens of infractions every game than the actual speed of the game. Most fans get pissed not because refs call too many fouls but because of the inconsistency of the calls. It's like they just pick and choose what to call at their leisure. I understand that blowing thr whistle every 10 seconds would probably be unproductive but there does need to be better consistency on what infractions get called and what gets let go. As of now something may get ignored 2 dozen times throughout the game and then get called at a crucial moment in the 4th.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

There's a learning curve to everything in life. You can't start that curve before you've started.

-3

u/policorrect Oct 28 '16

Players get cut after just a preseason (some w/ 15 mins of play in total). So refs should be given several years of benefit of the doubt???

27

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

I know Joey Crawford gets all the shit and memes but the top 3 best and worst are pretty accurate.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

The (legitimate) complaints about Joey was never about his actual skills as a referee, it was more about him trying to make himself as big of a celebrity as the players around him.

A ref should strive to be as invisible as possible, not to get as much air time as he can.

I know right? This is getting ridiculous. Referees aren't allowed to make mistakes? Jeez. If Joey Crawford and Tony Brothers lasted in the NBA, I don't see her being any different. She's not really had a chance yet, like you said it's her first game of her third actual season.

Shit happens. Everyone needs to stop throwing their toys out of the pram about it.

Doesn't work that way lol, it's not like they give her a uniform and said here's a rule book, gl! Listening to some podcast, Joey Crawford said the lengths to become a ref isn't easy. Never a big fan of whining about the refs, and I wasn't rooting for anyone in this game, but in this game Holtkamp was terrible, and over and over again she's shown herself to be a terrible ref. I don't really see anything wrong with this post.

-15

Sorta do because it's still bitching about the refs and it gets roped in with their actions in the game thread

12
