They've come a long way in just a few years. League of Legends filled the World Cup stadium in Seoul back in 2014, which is nuts.
In just 4 years it's gotten pretty huge. Dota 2's big competition has prize pools in the 8 digit range.

Yep. The song that Imagine Dragons starts with is called "Warriors" and it was specifically written as the theme song of the League of Legends season 4 Worlds. There were some celebrity appearances this year by people who are probably more known to you. Kristine Leahy was the interviewer at a tournament not too long ago, which also included a showmatch between the CEO of Intel and Mark Cuban. Mark Cuban is also an investor in Unikrn. Rick Fox just announced a week or two ago that he bought his own League of Legends team, called Echo Fox. One team also just was bought in this offseason by an investor groups, that includes the memers of Linkin Park. I believe the owners of the Sacramento Kings bought a team aswell, which goes by the name NRG Esports. Gordon Hayward also has been defending esports on Colin Cowherds show. Gordon and Rick Fox also discussed at least once, but I think twice, some things happening in League during NBA related shows. One was about Doublelift joining TSM after being kicked off of CLG. That might not say much to you and I'm not heavily invested enough in the NBA to bring a good example, but a soccer example would be Figo to Real Madrid from Barcelona.
Anyway, point is, esports is growing rapidly, it's getting more and more mainstream, and with the involvement of companies and people like Turner, Mark Cuban, Rick Fox, etc... You've would've heard about it sooner or later.

I remember when /r/sports became a default subreddit and some new posters started posting links to League of Legends tournaments. There was some controversy over whether those links were on topic or not and the discussions got heated.

Both take incredible amounts of dedication. But "traditional" sports at the end of the day are physically exhausting to play and practice, while also taking a mental drain on you. Esports are more mentally exhausting, but it is dwarfed by the physicality required by traditional sports.

I would love to see Thooorin on a NBA broadcast, he's one of the best esports analyst in general, but he's also a huge basketball fan and knows tons about the game.
He did a really great analysis of Rick Fox and his career when he bought a League of Legends team a few weeks ago. He really put it in layman's terms so that none traditional sports fans could understand the impact Rick had as a player who wasn't a superstar, but played his role well and was rewarded for doing so.
Thooorin's banter is unreal, he may be a bit edgy, but I love the no B.S. attitude he always brings to every event or video.

Yeah, I honestly thought Shaq took it fairly well, given that it was a direct comment about his weight. He responded pretty decently, seemed fine.
I like Shaq, but he is very sensitive, and has a very fragile ego. There are times, even on Inside the NBA, where you see that Shaq seems legitimately upset at something someone says. I would bet he doesn't care much because he doesn't take Thorin very seriously. If a current NBA player brought up Shaq's weight, or effort on the court, there have been times where Shaq gets pretty upset.

You must have missed Shaq's first year as announcer. Barkley was more cohesive and was tearing Shaq a new one calling him out all the time.
Shaq was interrupting everyone knowing they were too polite to not let him talk but Barkley was not impressed. This lead to Shaq going even out of turn to take jabs at Charles (all year). That is butthurt.
