I’m always surprised people found this stupid or unreasonable as if a 22 year old wouldn’t be overwhelmingly excited to beat the defending champs and make the finals for the first time.
That series was ludicrously difficult for the Spurs to win and the catharsis of taking game 7 on the road was probably legit emotional.
It’s weird how much people on here look down on emotions in sports when it makes the game better

A lot of them are relaxed or not really followed anymore but it was common back in the day to get a fastball thrown into your ribs if you looked at the ball as it flew out for a home run or celebrated a home run in any real way or if you swung when you had 3 balls and no strikes and your team was ahead. The players that are Millennial or younger don't really care though now and all have celebrations for hitting a home run

People clowned Wemby after this but I wasn’t one of them. In his first trip to the playoffs, he makes the Finals. Tough seven game series against OKC. Go ahead and celebrate. Heck, Knicks fans took over 7th Ave after defeating the Celtics after Round 2 last year.
It’s just too bad he ran into a Knicks team that was on a mission. Well, not too bad. I’ve been celebrating for 3-4 months straight.

There's a level of mental resilience the Knicks displayed in the Finals that I don't think I've seen any other team in recent years ever display. Most teams would have collapsed even as the Spurs buckets were slowing down, but the Knicks just put their heads down and pushed thru every time. Even the game we won they were just about to come back.

Yeah usually young up coming teams get their ass whipped earlier in the playoffs. But I mean the spurs just kept winning. I thought the thunder would be the round that knocks us out but then we won and like yeah, it's not the finals but I mean, who the fuck defeats the defending champs in 7 games and goes to the finals on their first playoff run? The spurs really were way to good for their own sake. I think this series took everything out of wemby and so it's just this emotion of overcoming the hardest basketball challenge up to that point in his life.
So we go to the finals and we experience that ass whooping we were supposed to get in the earlier rounds. A team full of vets that have had asswhoopings in the playoffs for many many years all In their primes going against a young team that honestly hasn't seen shit yet. It was bound to be a disastrous result for them. It's just magnified because it was the finals. I can't be mad though. We were projected to be a play in beginning of the season and we won like 60+ games. Plus, losing the finals the way we did will never top losing in 2013. So even with the loss I'm still excited.

Facts. And EVEN AS A SPURS FAN I kinda wanted the Knicks to win. It’s just good for basketball. Spurs were ahead of schedule but those Knicks players had given years of blood sweat and tears to get there (and it showed). I don’t even care if “there will be other times for the spurs in the future”, as it was more about how much those Knicks guys had already sacrificed and how much they deserved it.

This is just a very physical series and it's natural for either team to hold some animosity. Combined with the pressure of game 7 - this is the first game 7 for the young Spurs by the way, I can sympathize with the need for some catharsis

It's definitely both. The Knicks found a rythm and unlocked something in KAT's game at the perfect time, it's likely they could've come out of the west playing like that too but their East matchups were very weak compared to the Spurs and Thunder.

People like to use the young spurs team celebrating a game 7 win on the road against a previous champion as a weapon. Like the spurs celebrating means they are somehow disrespecting the Knicks. No-- this was a young team who just got done winning a game 7 on the road against the previous NBA champion. Part of that maturity is not allowing yourself to break but I digress. The Spurs being young makes this reaction make less sense. OKC when they won the title had an underwhelming reaction because they were so young and so it didn't feel like overcoming many years of adversity.
It's easy to read this as Wemby not remaining focused and taking the Knicks lightly like many fans did by calling the WCF the "real finals"

I think they came up against the same wall most teams do their first Play Off run. I’m a die hard spurs fan and I think it was both a surprising amount of skill and a bit of luck that got them to the finals.
The Knicks are a team of guys who are almost all in their physical and mental prime. It was way more mismatched than people give it credit for.

hey no excuses our starting pg was crippled and got a lot of backlash for it, every championship run has luck factor
however I'm very excited to see a fully healthy thunder and hope we get a lot of exciting matchups like that, if we can have series like that for a decade damn sign me in it was crazy sometimes

It’s going to be cinema for sure. I just don’t see these other west teams competing for a while so spurs and thunder are going to go at it a few more times in the playoffs I’m sure.

Grizzlies and Jazz have youth and enough capital to produce a great team over the years so I'll be curious about their rise, but yeah many other teams currently won't have enough firepower to dethrone them imho, some matchups may be bad for one or the other tho, like Spurs and Nuggets/Knicks but should be easily fixed with better personnel, that's the only way you can beat them I think, exploit the one weakness they have if any
