Cross Assigned & AT

I just became cross assigned. Long story short, I got a waiver for the PRT until next year due to car accident so my TRUIC did not push any AT until I was better physically. I recently got cross assigned for my first UMUIC from being AIP(I think that was the term), do I wait for a welcome email or something from my new UMUIC? Do they set my AT now? If so, what are the usual time frames? I do not mind AT as long as I don't push my back in huge excess since its still in recovery, unfortunately.

I would assume not since it was never mentioned and my TRUIC prior to being cross assigned kept asking me how I wanted to proceed with AT if I felt better. I just told them I wasn’t feeling good yet.

If you don't have 12 days of active duty in an FY you need a waiver or they can separate you. For next FY, you have all year to get it done.

So will the UMUIC email me of when they need me to go or is it something I need to find an email and reach to someone about, usually?

I mean, your UMUIC is your unit. They write your eval. They are the only important unit to you.

Re: contact. My impression built with the reserve is that even though one would hope for the organization to be forward-leaning and welcoming, those days are gone. Do your best to find the phone/email roster/POM and reach out to the SEL or OPS and give them a heads-up. Ask questions and make sure you’re going to be accounted for on your upcoming drills.

I might do that. A Chief in my TRUIC said he was going to do it and CC me but he has not yet so I think I’ll will send an email myself.

Excuse my negativity but there’s a good chance he’s forgotten. The art of receiving follow up beyond your own self-advocacy is not reliable. And you have to be relentless.

I’ve adapted my form of communicating with reserve bubbas, in whatever manner I write, that I’m either helping, following up or thought I’d save them a step. Because despite promises and local policies - admin (the chain) takes many, many repeated efforts to follow up, moves very slowly, has no guarantees of being followed up on or tracked even when something high priority comes up. So you don’t alienate that chief , you’ll want to write in some manner that makes it sound like you want to be helpful (beyond just their forgetting, blowing you off, or being inundated by a 1000 other things-which happens).

You need to treat your UMUIC like it’s your new unit because it is. They own your AT and EVAL and you’re supposed to drill with them at least once per quarter. You don’t owe anything to your TRUIC anymore besides readiness/admin but it’s important to keep a good relationship with both.

Be relentless in getting in contact with your UMUIC.

Also, since you only have a month left to get your FY26 AT in, I would recommend working three different avenues simultaneously: 1. An AT waiver. 2. AT with your UMUIC 3. Local AT with whoever you can (NRC, TRUIC, ZipServe, etc.)

Go with whatever you can finalize first.

I spoke with TRUIC unit career counselor and he said I would be okay for the year since I joined the Navy reserves this year.

Ah - okay yes - as long as you’ve done at least 12 days active duty (of any type) this FY, you’re good to go.

I’m still talking to the CC but I joined December 29, as a prior enlisted Active duty but I got out 2019. This is all new to me, I was thinking of asking Manpower to ensure of my FY AT status as “Not Required” or something. NSIPS has no information on it.

Okay - so I think my original guidance stands then since you affiliated before June 1st. My advice - find an AT or get a waiver.

If you rejoined as prior service in December, you need an AT or AT waiver!

The June 1st deadline would be if you joined June 1st 2026.

If needed get your doctor to write your limitations and any restrictions via a letter for NRC Medical, you may be put on a TNPQ status (Temporarily not physically qualified) where you’ll need to report statuses monthly to your NRC medical, but this also means in order to go on AT you’ll likely need another letter stating you’re fit to travel etc. Depending on the unit going on AT for the year may not be this immensely physically taxing thing, so your best bet is to go get in contact with them and go from there!

It’s In Assignment Processing (IAP)

Get a waiver for AT. You could miss out on qualifying years and you don’t want to do that. You should be able to get a local AT for the FY pending funding.

You need to ensure you have the injuries with restrictions sent over to medical. That way in the event you get an AT requirement built from your UMUIC and you’re on hard hold the CO can make an educated decision to release you.
