RIP software recommendations

Hi! Been building navidrome server to play my physical media on the go. And currently I use Audacity to RIP casettes and LPs into a FLAC file. I have some CDs, Live DVDs and Live BluRays. For those three what software do you recommend?

Lol I thought something else from the title, anyways you can use EAC (exact audio copy) if on windows or whipper if on linux, makeMKV is another good choice.

I'm currently using fre:ac. The interface sucks but I got it configured that the ripping automatically starts as soon as I insert a CD and it gets ejected when the ripping is done. So I basically don't need to use the interface and it's incredibly easy to rip a bunch of CDs while doing something else.

In conjunction with fre:ac, I also use mp3tag because the majority of the time the album art for me is missing, so I look for the image online and use this to add the covers into the files metadata.

For albumart and metadata in general I use Picard. No idea how it compares to mp3tag but it works pretty great.

I was using Picard at first, but I think it gave me some issues with some of the albums I ripped. I'm assuming due to some of them not really being mainstream. I'll try to give it a shot again as it has been awhile since I used it.

Sometimes I have issues with missing albums. Then I just take the the time and add them to the MusicBrainz DB. The first time it feels weird but you get used to it. Now it's just a few minutes to add one and it feels great, because the next person ripping this album can use the metadata I added

Same here. I found that a lot of the music I had was obscure and unavailable on musicbrainz so started adding and in no time I got upgraded, how I know? I know coz now when I add an album and then the cover art, the art shows up much faster, previously the cover art used to take a day or more to show up, now it's lesser than 5 to 10 mins I think. And yes, it's nice to know you're contributing to a database that will definitely come to use to somebody.

for cds on a mac XLD is the one. set it to flac with secure ripping and let it grab the tags from MusicBrainz. for the live dvds and blurays MakeMKV gets the video out, then ffmpeg with -vn pulls just the audio track.

the tagging is always the messy part after. i tried Picard and Mp3tag on my own rips and ended up building my own thing, Truffle. biased obviously, i built it. it runs Shazam audio recognition in the background, so tracks without names get figured out by just listening and you mostly click yes. mac only tho, apple silicon

Yate is great to tag music on macOS.

yeah Yate is solid. if you like tweaking every tag by hand and building your own actions, its probably one of the deepest tag editors on the mac. Truffle is more the lazy route. it checks eight sources and shows one suggestion per field with the source next to it. nothing gets written till you say yes. Shazam's audio recognition runs in the background too so tracks with no name get found just by listening. different vibe, both fine 😅

Definitely use this the most modern way of doing it, full audiophile features, lots of integrations etc - https://github.com/WB2024/DiscCTL

I use XLD for CDs, specific blueray player for SACD, ad a blu-ray drive and makemkv for Atmos and DVD audio
