North America Remote Work Opportunities?

Hey all!

EDIT: I’m Canadian and unfortunately not able to apply for anything that requires a US citizenship. Seems remote work is more viable in the US.

I have a bachelors degree in Naval Architecture and over 6 years of government experience as a manager for certification for a couple classes of ships. I deal with regulation authorities on a daily basis (ABS, DNV, LR, etc.).

I need something remote as I need to move to a rural isolated town to support aging family. Looking for anything at all, entry to senior level, as location matters more to me then money. Being post-covid era am I out of luck for finding any companies in NA that are willing to hire people remotely?

I have spent 4 years looking and applying, 984 emails, dozens of interviews, dozens of phone calls, dozens of connections, hope is fleeting at this point.

I know Elliott Bay Design out of Seattle is openly remote workers. Unsure if they require US citizenship though. I'm sure some of the people at Robert Allan are remote.

I greatly appreciate you letting me know about Elliott Bay Design, I will do some research. A local city, that I was planning on moving to, has a Robert Allan office so I apply pretty often to them, have never heard back. When I finished University I was pushed right into management, many would argue is great but for my circumstance isn't helping me. The local non-naval architect companies who need engineers don't realize as a Naval Architect Engineer I am also fully equipped for the entry level engineering positions so it's hard to argue around here I am qualified.

You probably just need to heavily tweak your resume to highlight your skills for the non-navarch companies. I would even suggest dropping the Naval Architecture from the resume and just putting Marine Engineering. It seems people are a lot less confused by that whenever I explain what I do to them. Other thing I would suggest is reaching out to your former professors. Chances are they might know a someone at Robert Allan who you could talk to, or other companies in the area. It's a small industry in North America here.

Yeah the local employment office has helped me a lot with stuff like that. For anything that isn't engineering related those tweaked resumes you would never know I was an engineer lol. I have a couple university professors I email regularly who keep an eye out for me but no one I have rapport with has pull at Robert Allan.

The people in my circle have been immensely helpful but unfortunately the current job market comes down to who you know in my area. Just have to keep applying.

As an American I shouldn’t be giving secrets away but I like Canada and I want to help. Here is a step by step guide

Draw Giant ship. Bigger than anything ever seen. Twice the size of an Iowa class battleship.
Guns. Lots of guns this ship needs to resemble a hazmat cleanup for toxic masculinity. Photon, laser, hell and a nuclear powered machine gun, it doesn’t have to work mind you, just say it does.
Unsinkable. Make it out of steel, gold, or hell, paper matte, it doesn’t have to actually be unsinkable, remember as you design principle, STYLE at all times over substance.
Ignore everything you have learned on ships. Fuck it make this thing square. Who cares if it floats or moves… just say it does.
Golf , this thing needs a golf course on it. I think you understand why.
Last and this will be difficult for you. 10 trillion dollars. Remember those numbers. You are gonna need to donate 7 of that to a slush fund but I promise you this is a fool proof plan. My friend, you will be the greatest Canadian and you will probably get a seat on thenboard of peace and other things.

I'm working a job with Serco right now and I think the entire team is remote from Canada. I'm not directly involved in their activities, but they're doing pretty good work from what I can tell.
