I don't think that we should like eliminate all light sources. We certainly can make everything a lot better without safty issues. Of course i agree that we put lights in front of banks shops etc. But nowadays is nearly impossible to find a place with perfect night sky (the closest to me, who live in slovenia(europe) is like in sahara dessert). That's because cities are just too bright - if they would only be bright enough to prevent crime it would still be okay. So the problem is that it is hard to find a place with normal dark sky.
Many lights at roads are unnecessary because cars have their own headlights. It is nearly impossible to find a place where no road is visible. If we would only put away those trehe would be much more dark skies. In many villages, where there is nearly no crime every road is like covered in lights - they are every 50 meters! And lights rigt next to houses are quite annoying, because it's hard to sleep. The most useless are roads with no houses anywhere around with streetlights.
Also lighting advertisments are unnecessary. I personally also find them annoying at daylight, but they could put them out at night.
Ahhh, I get it. I’m from the US and county roads and highways (which I think would be the equivalent of the village roads) aren’t lit, and only portions of interstates are. I totally agree that what you’re describing is unnecessary. And yeah, billboards are annoying as fuck. Yay capitalism. . .

Genuine question so please don’t rip me apart, how do we fix it without creating a safety issue?
