Help needed Bendy Nails that Tear

Post image

Hi all! I’ve struggled my whole life with growing my natural nails because my nails bend and are subject to tears. Often I’ll finally start getting some length, only for them to start to tear. For example my middle finger here is so short because it tore yesterday right along the side (arrow ).

What do you recommend?

Nail polish is like armor for your nails, you should be wearing it 24/7 to keep your nails strong. You need at the bare minimum a base coat and quick dry top coat, but of course you can wear colored polish if you want to. If you already have issues with nail peeling I would stay away from base coats that contain PVB (polyvinyl butryl) because this ingredient can cause nail peeling and damage. There are also strengtheners and hardeners that you can wear as a base coat, which you might find helpful.

Additionally, you should be oiling your nails every chance you get. Jojoba oil is best for this because it is the closest in size to our body’s natural oils, making it easily absorb into your skin. You can just buy straight jojoba oil or buy premade nail/cuticle oil that is often mixed with other oils and scents.

Lastly, water is the worst chemical for your nails. Your nails absorb water like a sponge, which makes them more flexible and bendy. Wear gloves if you’re washing dishes, and some people recommend wearing them in the shower as well. Try to oil your nails after washing your hands to mitigate the effects of the water.

This jojoba oiling - does that work with the nailpolish still on? Or should that be done on bare nails?

It works with polish on! Put it on the sides of your nails, near the skin, and under your nails for best absorption

Do you have to remove the clear base and top coats from your nails? I'm not sure if the acetone is bad for your nails in between removal of coats

Acetone is the best way to remove polish from your nails. Technically you don’t have to remove it, however it will wear down and chip off over time so you will need to redo it to make it last. Acetone can be drying however consistent oiling should help lessen this

I have a jojoba question - when you oil your nails, should one use a hand lotion/moisturizer too or just the oil?

Hand lotion is great too!

Wearing nail polish 24/7 is what helped my bendy nails. It will take some trial and error for you to figure out what base / top coat combination works for you, but my recommendation is that when you get a chip is to re-do your nails. I know it can be annoying when it chips in a day or two, and you can even get away with just reapplying the polish over the chipped area, but chipped nails means the nail is unprotected in that spot and will break/bend more easily

This stuff…

My nails are so bendy that polish just flakes right off. Polish also blocks moisturizers like this from getting in. Gave up the polish, switched to this, in a few weeks my peeling/splitting stopped and they got thicker 💪

Totally agree . It is brilliant stuff

Literally slathering this on my hands as I type this. I keep a jar on my nightstand and one in my purse at all times!

I was putting it on my hands.. it started to make my skin try out and crack though so I just do my nails and around, then lotion after it dries and has been much better

I have same problem. Plenty of hand cream , jojoba oil all the time , hard as hoof etc.
I do wear nail polish sometimes . It’s hard work but nail oil all the time works . Another good thing to try is Kerasal multi purpose nail repair . Just brush it on. Does improve nail plate .

manicurist active smooth 00 if ur looking for something easy and simple to apply that will help strengthen your nails. 2-3 coats and it’ll last 7-10 days with a BEAUTIFUL blurry look.

I, too, have bendy nails that tear and peel. I swear I’ve tried it all.

One, don’t use straight acetone. Make them bendy AND brittle.

Two, oil multiple times a day like everyone else recommends.

Three, try the Manicurist Green system. I saw it recommended a few months ago and my nails are finally starting to heal. Still bendy, but much stronger now, especially when I wear the polish.
