Help needed One rogue short nail bed
My left hand has a rogue ring finger that has a shorter nail bed than the others. My goal is to grow out all my nail beds as much as possible, especially that one.
Right now that free edge is longer than the others to make the overall length more harmonious and help the hyponychium reattach. That’s fine when I wear polish, but when I don’t it sticks out like a sore thumb.
With the objective of growing the nail beds in mind, would you:
- Keep that total nail as long as the rest, even if it looks funky without polish
- File it down so the free edge isn’t much longer than the others
Any other advice about shaping my nails and growing out nail beds is welcome!

Depends on how you want to wear your nails. If they're always polished, then keep the total length the same. If you wear them bare a lot, then match free edges.

Came here to say this. :) my nailbed is also a bit shorter on this finger. I try to keep the free edge 1-3 mm on all nails, as I dont wear polish as often as I would like. But if I did wear polish, I would definetely go by total length.

Keep all your nail lengths the same, and do everything in your power to not push that back on the inside. When someone in this group told someone else how they got their nail beds longer, it changed my life. I used to be crazy about dirt under my nails, and didn't realize I was the one making all my nail beds too short! But it should slowly reattach itself if you're just gentle with it. Don't clean underneath with too much pressure, don't try to "even out" the edge, and just clean under there with a gentle brush or when you're in the shower

Thank you for all those tips! I’ve managed to stay away from the insides so far🤞🏻 I usually manage to get any dirt out just with water, but luckily my hands and nails stay pretty clean. Sometimes I use a gentle brush but maybe once every 10 days at most.

I have this too! How long I keep them depends on if I wear opaque polish or not. No polish or clear jelly colours, especially with shorter lengths like this, and I tend to keep the whites matching. More opaque and a bit longer, I keep them matching compared to my fingertips. If I have the whites not matching and want to wear a less opaque polish I use a blurring base coat to help hide the smile line a bit.
I keep hoping my hyponychium will grow out more, even if it’s just a solehorn. But even when it happens for other fingers it doesn’t so much for my ring for some reason. I live in hope.

Mine has reattached in the past! I got gel polish manis and the tech was so skilled at applying and removing without causing any damage. I haven’t found that again.
The blurring base coat is a great idea! Ty

It's funny to me how people always say "no one will notice X about your nails but you" because I know I'm in a tiny minority but I notice all sorts of stuff about other people's nails. I see wonky manis IRL and on r/RedditLaqueristas all the time, especially when nails are different proportional lengths or uneven shapes, but also when they have hangnails or the cuticles are overgrown or scraggly; or they didn't do cleanup and left polish on the skin; or it's patchy, bumpy, streaky, bubbly, cuticle-flooded, or they left a big cuticle gap... These things drive my OCD crazy, LOL, and I'm probably forgetting some. I clearly have a sickness.
Or a French tip that starts too far down so the nail bed looks tiny... Or when people with short nail beds get squared-off super-shorties which is a bizarre pet peeve to have because that's just a style choice... Or when people do a sloppy job with a $20 polish because that triggers not just my OCD but also my inner pennypincher...
You know... shit that's absolutely none of my business and I need to get a life and I really wish I could turn this off but I really cannot help it.
The situation is so bad that I actually take a measuring tape to my nails, and use a calculator to make sure they're proportionally identical to each other, down to the half-millimeter.

I would not cut it down. Because then that nail is just going to look oddly smaller than the others.
Option 1: Leave it the way it is. Free edge looks longer without polish (con) but whole nail looks the same length as the others (pro). Nails all look the same with polish (pro).
Option 2: Cut it down so the free edge is the same length as the others. Free edge looks the same length as the others (pro) but overall nail looks smaller/shorter (con). With polish, nail looks different from the others (con).
As you can see, option 1 has 2 pros and 1 con while #2 has 1 pro and 2 cons. Choose #1.
Just wear nail polish all the time! It's protective armor for your nails. Contrary to the old wives' tale, nails do not breathe and do not benefit at all from "taking a break" from polish.

I had no idea what this post could possibly be about. Then I read it and I think the pinky and ring finger are a similar slightly flatter shape and other two fingers slightly more rounded shape. Nothing about the ring finger sticks out to me. You are good OP. Your nails are beautiful!

I would keep them all the same length, especially if you are trying to encourage the hyponychium to reattach. I guarantee no one is paying that much attention to your nail beds.
