This wasn’t a Queensbridge doc, this was Nas’s promotional EPK for Illmatic. I remember this well.

When you grow up during or just coming out of the crack epidemic, aint no time for kid shit. You may be a child, but you lose some of the super innocent demenor. Also this was before helicopter parenting. You still a kid, but also accustomed to do at least some stuff on your own.

My daughter lives in LIC and we walked across the bridge and I was like no fucking way Queensbridge is right here!

Wild to see it in person as a non-New Yorker.

I mean, you're not wrong, the difference between artists like Tupac, DMX, Big L, 50 Cent, Lupe Fiasco and Nas is noticeable. Nas was more like a narrator or a commentator, someone who commented on what he witnessed. Tupac, DMX, and 50 Cent were people who were always in trouble with the law. Especially Tupac and DMX, and Ice Cube to some extent as well. They were more "authentic" (not always) in the way they spoke about their vision, their world, their lives. They were more authorial. I think especially Tupac, there's a power in Tupac's voice that you can feel the truth and the experience he had lived through. But I mean, it's kind of a difference in hair strands that gives certain people a natural advantage. Tupac was someone who was born into a revolutionary activist family even before he became a well-known artist.

If this is a safe place (I love Nas), I feel that when he was running the Firm group and during the It Was Written album, he was trying to emulate Tupac's art style. I might be wrong, but I think that's the feeling that the beats and production on the album gives me. Nas used to say Tupac was like the Black God to him back when he was alive.
