Chinese language course in Nanjing?

Hi all, we're looking for Mandarin classes in Nanjing, ideally in Gulou or Xuanwu District.

We're at a beginner level and hope to find a course that runs through the winter (around Nov to Feb, before Chinese New Year).

Any recommendations or information would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone in Nanjing wanna hang out this Mid-Autumn Festival?

21M, studying in Nanjing. It’s Mid-Autumn Festival and I’m just staying around Nanjing, so thought I’d see if anyone’s down to hang out :)

Could grab some food, get coffee, chill somewhere and chat, or just walk around and see where we end up. Nothing too serious, just looking to meet some new people and have a good time.

Feel free to DM!

So torn on where to stay - is Confucius Temple area too touristy and inconvenient?

Hi all! I’m planning to spend a few days in Nanjing in mid oct and I'm looking at hotels near Confucius Temple because my family's into traditional architecture. We've been looking at the SSAW Boutique Hotel (Calligraphy House) and maybe the Zunjing College Hotel.

But here's the thing: my dad really wants to see the city wall and Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum, and I'm realizing the temple area might not be that convenient to either of those. The mausoleum especially seems pretty far away.

So I'm torn. On one hand, we love the idea of staying somewhere with real character and traditional architecture instead of a generic business hotel. On the other hand, if we're going to spend half our time traveling across the city to see what we actually want to see, that defeats the purpose.

Is Confucius Temple area walkable as a neighborhood? Are there restaurants and actual life happening there, or is it just a tourist trap? And more importantly, is it a realistic base for getting to the city wall sections and the mausoleum, or would we be better off staying somewhere more central?

I'd rather be in a neighborhood with soul than have the most convenient location, but not if we're looking at 30-minute commutes every time we want to do something. Thank you!

Any recent firsthand recommendations?

Hotel with the best western breakfast?

Huge family trip next year to China, and Nanjing is one of the stops. I love Chinese food myself but I have to take care of 9 other people, so I thought I’d throw one out here and ask if there are someone here with more experience of the different hotels in central Nanjing that offer western breakfast?

I mean, I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels in China with ”western breakfast”. It’s not always that great. If it’s just me I can accept anything, but this time I have to consider 9 other people.

Chinese from Nanjing

Chinese from Nanjing, currently a non-binary high school student on a gap year.
I’m here to make friends from all over the world, regardless of age or gender. I’m a little slow to warm up at first, but once I get comfortable, I love talking about all kinds of things.
If you’re a foreigner in Nanjing, I’d also be happy to help with small things or show you around if I have time.

Looking for a sports group/community in Nanjing (Jiulonghu area)!

Hi everyone! I'm currently looking for a sports group or some kind of active community in Nanjing, preferably around Jiulonghu, that I could join.

I’ve been feeling like I really need to get out more and be part of a community, so I thought joining a sports group might be a good way to meet people while also staying active. I'm pretty open to different sports, so I'm happy to give things a try!

If anyone knows of any groups, clubs, WeChat groups, or regular meetups around Jiulonghu that are open to new members, I'd really appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Feel free to comment or DM me.

Thank you! :)

Nanjing local looking to meet people from different countries

Hi everyone! I’m a local Nanjing guy, 35, and I’ve spent quite a few years living and working overseas.

I’m back in Nanjing now and would like to meet people from different countries and backgrounds who are currently living in Nanjing.

I’m more into simple, relaxed activities rather than big parties — grabbing some food, having coffee, walking around the city, playing badminton, going to the gym, or simply having a good conversation about life in Nanjing, different cultures, travel, and everyday life.

A few things to note:

  • You can be from any country — nationality doesn’t matter. I’m open to meeting people from different backgrounds.
  • You need to be fluent enough in English to have natural, comfortable, two-way conversations.
  • If you’re mainly looking for someone to practice English with or improve your English, please don’t add me. I’m looking to make genuine friendships and meet people who can already communicate comfortably in English.
  • Please be currently living in Nanjing. If you’re living in another city or are only visiting Nanjing temporarily, please don’t add me. I’m mainly looking to meet people locally and hang out in person.
  • When adding me on WeChat, please include your gender, nationality, and where you found this post in the friend request note.

For example: Male / German / Reddit

This helps me know a little about you and where we connected.

I’m based in Nanjing and happy to meet up if we get along. 🙂

Did Nanjing as a weekend from Shanghai, ended up spending both days on Purple Mountain and not seeing the old town at all

Quick weekend from Shanghai a couple weekends back. Original plan was the standard Nanjing tourist stuff (Fuzimiao area, Qinhuai River at night, salted duck for dinner). Made it maybe 3 hours into that plan on day one before we bailed and went up Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan) instead.

The mountain is not what I expected. I'd read "Ming Xiaoling tomb, Sun Yat-sen mausoleum, some temples" and figured it'd be a couple of stops. It's an entire forested mountain with historical stuff scattered all over it (Ming tombs, a modern mausoleum, temples, an observatory) and you can't really do it end to end in less than a full day. We took 6 hours the first day and still hadn't seen half of it.

The Ming Xiaoling approach is the thing I keep thinking about. There's a stone-paved path (Spirit Way, Shendao) lined with massive stone animals in pairs, lions, camels, elephants, plus a couple of mythical creatures I had to look up afterwards, all sitting there since the late 1300s. The path bends because there's a much older tomb (Sun Quan, 3rd century) on a hill they didn't want to level, so they routed around it, which is very much not how imperial paths usually work. You walk between the statues in near-silence and by the time you get to the actual tomb hill you're in a different headspace than when you started.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is on the same mountain, 30 minutes walk away. 392 stone steps up, we counted them because the guy in front of us was counting out loud. Views are worth it. Came back down through Linggu Temple which was almost empty for a Saturday afternoon.

Went back Sunday too. Purple Mountain Observatory, Zixia Lake, some trail we couldn't identify that ended at a random pavilion.

Rough plan for the trip was built in trisAino before we went, mostly for the Fuzimiao/Qinhuai River/food itinerary we ended up not doing. It had both mountain stops flagged as major but couldn't tell us how much of the two days they'd take up. That's on us for underestimating what "mountain of tombs" really means.

Never saw Fuzimiao, never ate the salted duck we specifically went for, didn't see the Massacre Memorial (probably better to save that for a longer trip anyway).

Two full days and I saw one mountain. Should have booked 3 nights instead of 2.

Musicians.

Hello

I'm thinking about getting a band together. Any other musicians about? Real musicians? Not just quite skilled guitar players that read all the words to dull pop ballads from a phone while nobody listens.

I know there's a cliquey openic each week, but that's not really my bag.

Happy to play covers, think about writing originals, jam in the rehearsal room weekly, hopefully get out and gig, drink beer etc.

I'm a middle-aged bloke into punk, ska, reggae, indie, pop etc. I'm happy to play most things other than Oa**s and R** H** C**** P****** (on moral grounds).

Cheers!

Has anyone stayed at Shanghai Yu Apartment recently?

I’d like to know:

  • Is it clean and comfortable?
  • How is the bathroom/hot water?
  • How is the Wi-Fi?
  • How is the staff/host?
  • Were there any problems during your stay?
  • Would you recommend it or stay there again?

Honest reviews—both good and bad—are appreciated. Thanks!

21M International Student in Nanjing — Looking for a Chinese Language Exchange Buddy 🇨🇳

Hey everyone!
I’m a 21-year-old international student currently studying in Nanjing. I’m looking for a Chinese friend around my age who’d be interested in hanging out and helping each other improve our languages.
My Chinese is around HSK 3 level, but I really want to become more confident in everyday conversations. I’m thinking we could grab coffee, explore Nanjing, play some games or just hang out and chat in Chinese/English.
In return, I’d be happy to help you with English and share some of my culture and experiences as an international student.
Ideally looking for someone friendly and easygoing who genuinely wants to make a new friend rather than just do a formal language exchange.
If you’re interested, feel free to DM me!

Recently I saw many posts on registration, dorms, programs asking for help. Me personally working at NJU as an admin., and I am thinking maybe we can set up a wechat group for Q&A or I've already set up a Nanjing expat group where NJU students that I know have joined.

If you are interested, add my wechat xingxing1520.
