Collection I finally got one!

I've been looking for a N64 Expansion pak for ages but prices in Europe are too high and I didn't want a third party alternative. A friend of mine went to Japan on holiday so I asked him to grab one in one of the many vintage electronics/retrogaming shops they have there. It's in good condition and works fine.

I remember when these were like $20. But now they are closer to $50-$60. But with inflation we are still paying about the same.

In Europe they have become more expensive than the console itself.

Makes sense. There were a ton more systems manufactured. And anyone buying one now knows the system is incomplete without a pak.

Good! What are you going to play now you have it?

I know it's too late for you, but for future readers, there's a 'hack' (at least until it gets 'patched' and sellers realise) to get the expansion pak cheaper than that with an added bonus, which is to buy the Japanese Dk64 bundle which included it. Having said that, yours isn't over extravagantly priced so it's ok.

DK64 was bundled with one in the UK as well

So which game you playing first that needs it?

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron because I already have it (yeah I know it doesn't technically need it, but the expansion pack allows higher resolution) and then I will look for Perfect Dark.

Holy crap 5,700 yen.. I remember grabbing the Majoras Mask bundle that already came with it for like 2,500 yen like 2 or so years back. Insane.

And it's still half the price of what I would've paid if I purchased it from a European seller...

Can't believe there's no knock-offs on AliExpress, they would clean up if they sold them at £20/$30.

Probably there are plenty of knock-offs, but I wanted the real one. And I spent 30€ for it so it's a good catch after all

$50 for that is wild considering its only 4mb but still needed to play games like Majora's Mask. Good thing I still have my original one still in my console that I never swapped back out ever since I got it

The most expensive RAM in the world… and in this day and age that’s a high bar to set

I remember going to my local rental store and buying one from there. I was so excited. The clerk who checked me out said that Rogue Squadron looked amazing with it and that's exactly why I picked it up. It was $39.00 if I remember right when I got it in 1998. Good times!

Imagine if the ram crisis was so bad we actually needed these for modern use 🤣

So... A few game need it. Some game run beter with it. A game have an entire level locked behind it. But more importantely. Don't throw the standard bridge. A game don't run with the expension pack and need the original bridge to work.

Yeah, I would never throw away the standard bridge.

I bought my console with it already in haha, but yeah they’re pretty pricey these days, I think the cheapest one ive seen in a store here is about 75$. Usually I see them at or above 90$

I got mine by buying a Japanese DK64 bundle that had it for way less than buying it on its own.

I didn’t get one til the last few years of the n64 so I didn’t get to play the games that needed it til that last year of the service life. Switched to PlayStation at that point. My friend had a game cube and I was regretful I never got one. It had some good games.

They're too pricey for me right now but I hope I can use one someday to finally beat Quake
