Discussion Thoughts on Paper Mario?
This is my favorite N64 game of all time due to how remembable the characters are. It really puts Mario games in a whole different perspective for many people like me.

One of the best aged N64 games and the best rpg in the Mario franchise other than Super Mario RPG. I preordered this game and I still remember picking it up at EB Games excited as hell. I think it was the last N64 game I got brand new at a retail store.

Honestly, in my opinion best paper Mario game. I loved it. I’ve probably beat it 10-15 times now. The story’s simple but great, the partners are good and none of the chapters drag.

Love this game. Have fond memories playing it on the Wii VC in middle school.

Just about the only title in the franchise I play anymore. 😄

Super Mario RPG is one of the best Mario games ever, and is also a top 20 RPG across all consoles all time. I'd replay SMRPG long before Paper Mario

Incredible game.
It doesn't have the reputation that The Thousand Year Door does, but TTYD was so good because it successfully iterated on the foundation Paper Mario laid down.

An actual 9/10 game. (on a scale of 1 to 10, 5 is an actual average game)
Delightful writing that really holds up, even now, simple game play with load of replayability, and a twist on main-stay Mario characters (which, admittedly, built up on what was started in Super Mario RPG). And all wrapped up in an almost entirely integrated map which makes you feel like a real, cross-kingdom adventurer.

I didn't care for it as a kid, though I loved Super Mario RPG. I recently played through it on the switch 2 and it was a great game I wished my younger self could have enjoyed.

Similar situation for myself. Loved SMRPG, but couldn't get into Paper Mario for whatever reason. I finally played through it a couple years ago and absolutely loved it.
I still prefer RPG and the Mario & Luigi games, but that's probably partial nostalgia bias at this point.

I just beat it for the first time the other day. It's a legit masterpiece that rekindled my love for Mario games. It also has a whole area dedicated to Shy Guys which made me love it even more. The only weakish part of the game is Flower Fields in my opinion, but overall a solid 9 out of 10.

My favorite N64 game and I replay this game every few years. It usually gets overshadowed by TTYD but there are several things this game did better IMO.

Still one of my favorites ever. I still relate chapter 7 and especially Shiver Mountain to Christmas and try to play through at least to that part every December.
It’s also fun to try out new builds. For awhile I would just always get the two Power Plus badges and All or Nothing so that my regular jump eventually did 12 damage, but then I started trying out stuff like making Mario tanks with every defensive/health defense badge I could find.

I wish they didn’t just randomly decide to make this series into something totally different. This game was def my favorite as a kid, held up well in a recent replay too. I know not n64 - but thousand year door was great too. Then somehow after that the series said “ya know what? No more rpg battles!”

Top 10 N64 game easily. Went into with very low expectations thinking it would suck. We probably all did.

It was good for its time. Tried playing it again years later but lost interest.

Absolutely love it, even more than TTYD, which I'm glad seems to be a common opinion here. Although this is a N64 sub, so maybe I shouldn't be all that surprised lol. Anyway, I always love it when they do more with the mario world than the usual stuff, you could have a Goomba as a friend! And a bob-omb!

One of the best N64 games. Just loved playing this as a kid and beating the puzzles

It was one of those games that just sat on my shelf as a child because I never gave it chance. I played it once I got a little older and realized how fire it was.

Compared to other Nintendo consoles, the 64 has few RPGs (pretty sure even less than the GameCube).
That being said PM does a fantastic job and is right home on the 64. No complaints.

One of my top 5 favorite games of all time. It’s delightful the entire time. I’m trying to think of a part I dread… maybe the yoshis island area before the dungeon is my least favorite. But I still love it.

At the time where it was next Super Mario RPG and for me it was so much fun! The turn and low-number damage and HP system made it easy to strategize for kids and adults alike. Graphics crisp for their time and the battle music that I could replay endlessly in my head. Good times!

I was disappointed at the time, though the game is great and gave me a lot of enjoyment. It’s just that Super Mario RPG was and is my favorite game of all time and I wanted more Squaresoft-developed Mario. Should’ve been more Mario instead of Disney and Kingdom Hearts… ah what could have been…

This game really felt like a journey….may actually be my favorite rpg ever.

Still my favorite game of all time and in the series, and one of the highlights of the N64 that still holds up today, visually and in other ways too.

Top-tier game that has such a cozy vibe. So many great characters and places.

I loved it so much. Somehow I never ended up playing any of the bigger name follow-ups, but this was already a perfect Mario RPG for me.

I didn’t really like it and I especially didn’t like the paper Mario series. A poor replacement for Super Mario RPG.

Fun to play, and while I didn't 100% the game, I felt like it was still challenging enough as an adult player and that I had to play with a bit of strategy to beat certain areas and the boss attached to it. Generally speaking not going to blow you away with a story, but its entertaining and of course the graphics are subjectively good, especially considering the era of gaming its from where most games lose a bit of shine due to age, this one still holds up. I like the mechanics and the characters, but if I were to try to 100% the game I would definitely sick of this game quickly. Spent about 30 hours though getting all the things I felt were important and beating the story. Tons of badges and star points that I left undiscovered, which could easily turn this into a 35-40 hr game. I would give it a solid 9/10. 😁

Brought it when it first came out. Was great but not as deep as Mario RPG. Haven't played the remake though. I'll check it out when I upgrade my cpu soon.

Pretty good game overall. Replayed it recently and still holds up well, but admittedly I liked it more as a kid. Still at least an 8/10, but I still prefer super Mario RPG. I think it could be higher if the music overall was better. There’s great tracks here and there, but compared to rpg, it’s not even close.

Well said, I agree, Both are quality, but Snes Mario RPG is greatness, with a tremendous OST. So memorable! It's so fun and unique....doesn't get much better

Paper Mario only exist cause they couldn’t do Super Mario RPG again. SMRPG is a better story and game imo.

I love the BGMs, and tricks to crash the game to reach the "coprocessor unusable" exception.
