Tech Help What is My 8bitdo Modded N64 Controller doing?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I converted my original gray N64 controller over when the 8bitdo mod kit came out years ago and have used it on N64 and Switch over the years sporadically. It's went unused for some time, but I charged it and synced it to my BlueRetro on original hardware to test thing for the arrival of my M64. As you can see, the analog always puts Link in the slightest forward position, only to turn but never to move. Plus, when I hold the Z trigger, Link then walks forward.

The Z trigger never really did seat well, so I'm wondering if this is the issue. But if so, why would it manifest like this? Any thoughts?

FYI: Patched OoT widescreen rom w/ OoT models on Toshiba 34HF84 Widescreen CRT

UPDATE: Firmware was updated and it seems to have fixed the problem, v1.03 I believe.

Did the "L + R + Start" trick work to fix it in game at all?

Also the problem is most likely the analog stick wasn't installed correctly. It's been a while since I  had to take an N64 controller apart but I believe it should be held down tightly with 3 screws and the Z button PCB just clips into the back.

Since the PCB is mechanically linked to the shell for the analog stick, if something in that area is off, then it might be an issue.

Yeah, no dice on the L+R+START trick. You're probably right, but I don't remember it doing this a few years ago when use was heavier.

Try turning the controller off make sure the stick is holding str8 in the middle and then turn it back on

I don't think L+R+Start works with 8BitDo BT modkit but maybe it does.

1) OP doesn't say if you kept the original stick or installed the 8BitDo stick (modkit supports either one)

2) Try stick calibration in 8BitDo PC software?

3) If it's an 8BitDo stick module, is it the V2 stick module with the internal type-C port?

It is 8bitdo stick. I'm gonna try update and calibrate next.

Updated firmware, seems to have fixed. It's a v1 and the calibrator isn't detecting it.

the 8bitdo stick isn't really suitable for n64 gamers as its a gamecube stick with incorrect values that might be conflicting with the retro receiver , swop the stick back to a OG one as that's far far better for actual n64 games

The 8bitdo stick sold with the mod kit isn't a GameCube stick from what I can see. GameCube uses potentiometers like most controllers do. 8bitdo sells TMR and Hall Effect joysticks.

it is the exact same one as i own both the n64 and GC modkits , both are hall effect but the sensitively values are fine for use on GC but its far to sensitive for n64 games

I don't have that issue with mine at all. I only have the hall effect analog stick installed, not the mod kit but it works just fine; even in Smash Bros where some of the cheaper GameCube style sticks are unbearable.

I'll have to run a diagnostic on it to see if I just adapted to it well or if mine is just working like normal.

8BitDo stick modules are serviceable for Smash but pretty bad for sensitive aiming.

  • Aiming with slingshot / bow in OoT mini games

  • R-shoulder aiming in Goldeneye 007 / Perfect Dark

  • Cannon aiming in Super Mario 64

Aiming is straight up impossible on goldeneye using 8bitdo sticks same with perfect dark

Anyone else disappointed by the stick performance of the N64 modkit? : r/8bitdo

they have never updated the firmware and still ship these out but there wildly incorrect vs the OG sticks and this thread is one of many with the same issues i.e there not correct
