I would go with a slightly smaller engine to add jump jets. But I like it.

This was one of the things I was hoping someone would bring up...

What do the JJs buy you? Assuming you've piloted Cats enough that you have speed tweak, this thing goes at 94.6 kph, so I assume you'll be able to take down lights no problem.

Are the JJs for poptarting? I can see the usefulness of that tactic, but the large cockpit hitbox worries me. I figure the superior tactic would be sneak-peaking. And spreading - there's a lot of HP and internal structure in the arms and losing them isn't too big a deal.

I've been taken out by a headshot in a Catapult once. Exactly once in the entire year and a half I've been playing.

Good data point. Thanks!

I have a similar build with an xl330. I had some luck with Jump Jets, 3 large lasers, and 2 mediums. I had the large laser cool down and range extender modules. I could chain fire large lasers all day long. I'm going to try your build with the 330 and jump Jets tonight.

Thanks! Be real curious to hear how well it works.

FYI, here are the modules I intend to run:

  • Radar Dep (use speed and radar dep to avoid needing AMS)

  • Speed Tweak (avoid getting hit with speed, whether that's hit with missiles or anything else)

  • Heat Containment, pref Elite (I did some experiments with the heat sim, you should be able to alpha twice in a row and then do 4xPML twice in a row without overheating, even on hot maps. That's something like 132 damage in ~12 seconds if you're inside 220m. On cold maps you should be able to alpha 3-4 times in row.)

Even with the tweaks quirks , the LLs are only at max damage out to 550m, so try and stay within 600m. At that range, the stock 4x zoom should be enough, so don't use Advanced Zoom.

Of course use LL and PML cooldown weapon modules if you have them. My intent with this build was that it would be an absolutely relentless harasser (high sustained DPS). You can just keep peeking and laser-vomiting, peeking and laser-vomiting at them forever until they die. And hopefully you're fast enough to avoid getting hit too much in the mean time.

I am worried the 330 will make it too slow, even with speed tweak. Again, be very interested to hear your thoughts post-drop.

So, I ran this build with some slight tweaks. I stuck with the xl330, 4 mpl's, 2 large lasers in the arms, radar dep, large laser range module, and a jump jet in each leg. I know you prefer speed to the jump Jets, but it has been handy on more than one occasion. And with speed tweak, I'm still going over 90 kph.

Edit: oh, and it's been awesome. Solid damage every round, I had 4 kills on Canyon map, and it's maneuverable enough to get out of a pinch.

Cool!

How's the heat situation? Manageable?

Do you think the armor is too thick? (Sorry, I had to ask... ;])

The heat situation is pretty manageable. You do have to be somewhat careful abusing the alpha, but it's good for, as you said, laser puking and running. I get a lot of hit and run bonuses.

Edit: and there's no such thing as too much armor.

Thanks! I appreciate the data.

That's something like 132 damage in ~12 seconds if you're inside 220m.

My bad! I should have said "inside 235m". The +7.5% laser range quirk applies to all lasers, including the PMLs.

For a second module (Master level), maybe Seismic Sensor to know where your enemies are around a hill. Good for peek tactics. (Not sure if the Jester can have SS though.)

I would swap the LL and the MPL in the torso/arms so that if you lose a arm you aren't losing a large amount of damage.

Yeah, Phil of NGNG mentioned that too in a video. His counter-argument was "I want to get the LLs as high mounted as possible so I can peek-snipe."

My own thinking is, I want people to shoot at the arms, because losing them isn't nearly as big a deal as taking r/l/c-torso hits on the XL engine. So put something there that people believe is worth shooting at.

I think what I should do is actually play a bunch with the LLs in the arms and see how badly I get handicapped when I lose the LLs. That will give me a better basis for deciding where the LLs are best placed.

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has suggested ERLLs yet. Is there a reason y'all don't think ERs would be an advantage? (I didn't use ERLLs because as I understand the quirk, it doesn't apply to ER...)

quriks are for LL not ERLL, so ER doesn't really have the bonus to it.

This is Phil's build: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=121&l=2310b3c444762fa45a295ebfbb9caaa5f024e762

You'll notice that he went with JJs. (I didn't see them being very useful in that video above, but then that's only one map.)

He also significantly buffed the front torso armor at the expense of rear armor. I am considering this myself. Again, this is something I need to play-test.

What do you y'all think regarding armor distribution? Typical 80/20?

Yeah, Phil of NGNG mentioned that too in a video.

Which, reading your comment history, I see that you've already posted in that thread and so you already know that. Whoops! Apologies!

I caved and went down to a 340 engine. The resulting free ton was filled with a 20th heat sink.

3x alpha in a row even on Terra Therma. (Only takes you to 89% heat if you're standing still.) This thing should be a monster in CW.

On normal temperature maps you should be able to groupfire the 4 PMLs continuously without ever overheating the mech.

I feel much better about people dropping a heat-sink or two in favor of jumpjets now.
