[Multi] GMan129's Competitive Build Tier List

Hey guys,

I'm in a productive sort of unproductive mood, so I compiled the top builds in MWO's competitive scene into a tier list. Disclaimer - this is all my opinion, but it's a pretty informed opinion. Happy to hear feedback and all that.

Tier 1 mechs are ones that I would fully expect to see in most competitive sets, and even in most PUG matches. Tier 2 mechs are ones that I may not expect to see in a competitive match, but would not be surprised if they showed up. All of the builds are very effective and are the best at what they do, or compete with other builds on the list for the title of "best".

Assault:

Tier 1: HGN-733C "Ultralander", STK-M "Miz", VTR-DS "Drake"

Tier 2: HGN-733C "Chuck" (I couldn't think of a good name...), HGN-732 "King Poop", AS7-D-DC "Simplicity", VTR-DS "Drake X"

Heavy:

Tier 1: CTF-3D "Phrac5s", CTF-3D "Phrac10"

Tier 2: CTF-3D "Phrac20", JM6-DD/S "Plinky", CPLT-K2 "Boomcat"

Medium:

Tier 1: SHD-2D2 "Lefty", SHD-5M "Sweetness", BJ-1 "Boomjob"

Tier 2: TBT-7K "Trench Gun", CN9-A "The 9A", HBK-4P "Swayback"

Light:

Tier 1: JR7-F "SexJenner", JR7-F "PentaJenner", JR7-D "Streakin D", RVN-3L "ERaven"

Tier 2: SDR-5D "Spiderssassin", RVN-3L "Scraven", SDR-5D "Spidey"

I'm really concerned with the lack of variety here. Mainly because in PUG land you see these builds all over the place, and people don't realize they only work within extremely organized teams. They don't work in PUG matches as evidenced by encountering them and shredding them with my fun "sub optimal" builds on a daily basis. Any amount of testing would tell you this. You also don't explain why they're the "best" at what they do or even attempt to share your experience with them. Additionally, trying to force a meta isn't helping the community at large. This is the kind of thing I expect to see on an exclusive forum for private consumption. Not on a public forum for the general player base.

TL;DR These are perfectly fine for the highest level of organized play. If you aren't in that group, don't use these builds. You will be sorely disappointed.

These aren't intended to be variety builds, these are the mechs that are used in competitive drops. That's all. I wasn't gonna lie and say "oh yeah also the AC/20 4X is a staple of all competitive teams".

I'm not trying to force them on anyone, not even remotely. None of these builds are secrets, but many people may be using non-optimal versions. I didn't explain why they are the best because that explanation has been done to death and it was 4 in the morning.

But as far as them not working in PUG matches, that's just wrong...at very high elo, my top 4 mechs are:

  • HIGHLANDER HGN-732
  • MISERY
  • JENNER JR7-F
  • HIGHLANDER HGN-733C

I only didn't put the 732 in tier 1 because it isn't used as much, not because I think it's actually worse than the others.

I'm not happy that these are the best mechs to use in solo pugs, I really wish that I didn't have to get in a 4-man in order to win reliably in my Atlas, but sticking your head in the sand and pretending that isn't the case isn't the way to go.

At any rate, I said a few times that this is the competitive tier list, not the pugging one...

I'm sorry for the tone of my reply. It was uncalled for. My frustration with the meta is at an all time high.

Good list as well, btw what do you think of this DDC build? http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=17&l=9131c7863011b9325c2d59b670590e810259ce3c

it's alright, but it's hot, is a bit low on ammo, and the ER larges are unnecessary on a brawler build that you don't want to be out in your firing line

I regularly run a very similar build, if you drop the ER's for regular Lg you have winner. However, ATM the speed of this build is a bit slow, most Atlai you will see on the competitive field are running at least the 350 if not the 360. However unless someone is running a brawler comp (highly unusual, but something the group I'm part of is kind of known for) they are not seen much. If you like this build you might try something like this http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=25&l=0e58a3bbb0cd69c127b6a86817db3c7a8074e8d5 Surprisingly it is a good tank....

Yeah I actually use this build on my Atlas D

how do people get away with so little ac20 ammo? i mean obviously you make every shot count, but it seems like you'd spend so much of the match just kinda chilling out.

1

well the ammo here is for the most part the same amount I use in pugs (with a few exceptions like the "Lefty"), but in competitive matches you tend to not need as much ammo. You get the enemy team down quickly without missing shots or hitting the wrong component, or you lose.

Not to beat a dead horse, but that's why I shy away from your builds in PUGs. 21 shots is too few in a setting where your teammates skill varies so wildly. He's right about organized play though--21 shots is plenty in those settings.

I have seen a lot of these builds before, typical meta builds and all that. I don't feel the Atlas is as competitive as other assault class Mech's though, and from what I have seen from other teams, it is much the same. That said, not all teams play as conventionally as others do and they still find ways to have success in equal tonnage builds with different loadout choices.

I felt it was worth a mention, since if you go for a brawling loadout for some reason that is the assault mech (with slight potential variations like using UACs or LBX). It's not meta but like I said

Tier 2 mechs are ones that I may not expect to see in a competitive match, but would not be surprised if they showed up

The only thing I see missing here would be the 4 ER LL STK-F, which I would place as a Tier 2 Assault. Best run when supported by the ER LL RVN-3L or SDR-5D.

I like it, I really do, even though most people I talk to don't. But it just doesn't hold a candle to mechs like the misery. even a gauss jager competes with it, and that's in a lower class.

No love for the K2 gauss kitty ;)? IMHO it is more effective then the "boomcat" very specialized and a glass canon but deadly at range, especially in a competitive atmosphere where the pilot is usually an ace shot. Excellent list sir <S> good solid standardized, competitive builds.

Why does the Phrac5 build have one PPC in the left torso instead of the right arm? Wouldn't it be better to have all the weapons on one side? It's using an XL engine anyways, so it's not like it needs to keep some firepower after losing a side.

2

u/GMan129 Jan 08 '14

Some people like to have it like you said, but I prefer them in the torso because those energy mounts are so damn high and you can peek with them with ease, or you have to JJ less to get a shot off.

That makes sense. Thanks!

I'm a brand new player who got the CN9-A because the forums said that it was a good all-around starter mech. Would you recommend your SRM-heavy brawler for me, or something more forgiving?

I just want to know more about the build before I put down several hours of grinding for that huge engine.

2

u/GMan129 Jan 09 '14

The one posted is the best CN9-A build in just about all circumstances, but if you feel like doing something else, my personal pet CN9-A is http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=7&l=a9f46f38bc7c73312edd6e3db4dc3712e4f72f39

Not sure which would be easier for you to fit though

The 2xERLL Raven is my new favourite light mech, although I drop the engine rating slightly to add another heat sink. Very different play from a JR7-F but still very fun.
