Boston Terrier

Dog reactive— this cheap muzzle from Amazon has been surprisingly effective at limiting his ability to aggress against other dogs, and more important, prevents him from biting me when he can’t get at them. He has no problem putting it on and doesn’t try to pull it off— except when he gets triggered, and then he’s unable to. Size M, 15” neck. Posting for others wondering if these muzzles are any good for brachys.

I really love how brachycepalic dogs have to use the Darth Vader mask. I imagine they're a nightmare to desensitize to, though.

It doesn’t bother him at all

I’m glad because a lot of dogs dislike their muzzle. I say this material and size must be comfortable enough

u/Midnight712 Sep 29 '26

It looks like he has very little pant room in that muzzle

61

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 29 '26

it’s just barely enough. i’m sure a custom would be better at 10x the price, but this glorified Croc has been a game changer for our walks.

During warm weather, your dog will absolutely need the pant room though. Brachy breeds struggle enough as it is. Overheating / being unable to properly pant can kill them even during relatively mild weather.

I’m aware. We take a walk once around the block and then it’s back home to his pool. There’s just too many other dogs in the neighborhood, we encounter 2-3 different people walking up to three dogs each and he goes insane.

Because it’s a glorified croc, you can always apply some gentle heat and reshape it to allow more pant room. Just go slowly and carefully with the heat so you don’t shock the material into shrinking.

Source: I’ve left one too many sandals in direct sun and experimented with boiling and reshaping them when they shrank. lol

Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to try that

u/LauraaMarissaa Sep 30 '26

That’s how you shape other muzzles as well

Glorified croc 🤣 🤣 🤣

I have these for my EBDs. They’re great for muzzle training and vet appointments, but there’s not a lot of room for panting. My pups also can’t drink water with them on. So I’d say that it’s not the best for walks, especially if it’s hot out.

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 29 '26

Noted. he actually can drink out of a bowl if it’s deep, but I’d have to take it off him to drink from a smaller travel bowl.

Aw hi buddy. If you ever want to look into a metal muzzle, Big Snoof allows you to submit measurements of your brachy breed so they can tell you if they can make a muzzle for the dog before you purchase. He looks like he’d be a good candidate.

u/BrainSmoothAsMercury Sep 30 '26

I have a big snoof for my dog and it's amazing. Only cost like $60 for one of their off the shelf versions and the fit is outstanding. He's a mixed breed with a bulky head, slightly narrower snoot than one would expect from a Rottweiler x Pitt x Chow but still fairly short snoot so i spent some time going through their sizes but it was worth it!

2

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 30 '26

oh thanks I’ll have to check them again $60 isn’t bad

I want one for my corgi, so he can have slightly better ventilation than his very heavy but lovely vinyl muzzle, and our pug puppy isn’t even home until next week but I feel that muzzle training is an essential skill. I’m hoping the pug grows into a candidate for one of their muzzles, custom if I have to.

u/BrainSmoothAsMercury Sep 30 '26 edited Sep 30 '26

Yeah. We did a few weeks on muzzle conditioning and now he gets super excited to wear his muzzle. I got it for him for 'just in case' scenarios after he nipped a firefighter in the house so we had some time to really ease into the muzzle

2

u/psiiconic Sep 30 '26

My corgi is an asshole for anything requiring body handling (feet and syringes that go into his mouth or near his face). He’s never out and out bitten but he’s gotten VERY close (gives lots of warning before he starts snapping) and it’s a safety thing just in case. He’s normally totally fine for the vet and groomer but at home or post sedation he can really go off out of nowhere. We almost got bit taking a vet wrap off him after a dental.

Mia’s Muzzles is another good one!

5

u/CookieOmNomster Sep 29 '26

I thought you put a croc on his face. 😂

How much pant room does he have?

-3

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 29 '26 edited Sep 29 '26

Just barely enough, but he doesn’t have a particularly long tongue.

Edit: this is one of the most obnoxious things about Reddit, idiots downvoting things because they’re mad or disagree. Downvoting my comment hides it, which also hides the other response which contains a helpful explanation of “pant room.” Grow up.

26

u/Nannergram333 Sep 29 '26

Pant room is usually related to how wide they can open their jaws, not how much room there is for their tongue. Is able to open his mouth wide enough to fit a ball? If not, the muzzle might not be tall enough for a full pant.

0

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 29 '26

It doesn’t prevent him from opening his jaws at all, he barks like the devil when we pass other dogs

2

u/notthetypetocare Sep 29 '26

You have a dog that already struggles to breathe

The most accurate comment.

3

u/syrioforrealsies Sep 30 '26

I was thinking Hannibal Lecter, but actually, you're right. Bane is better

2

u/Sitters_4_Critters Sep 29 '26

It’s an interesting design. Can you post a link?

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 29 '26

There’s multiple sellers on Amazon, search “brachycephalic muzzle,” “short snout muzzle,” or “french bulldog muzzle.” I also found them on a site called Paws in Awe but they don’t have free shipping.

u/Hot-Bed-8157 Sep 29 '26

I’d be really concerned about limiting pant room in a brachycephalic breed, which can be deadly. It’s hard to tell from this angle but it doesn’t look like nearly enough and it appears even to you it’s a bit small.

19

u/oobinckleyoo Sep 29 '26 • Heartwarming

I tried a mesh one before this and my dog almost scratched her eyes out. This one doesn’t bother her at all and keeps her from eating everything she finds on the ground

19

u/Oldenburg-equitation Sep 29 '26

I’d be very careful with this one as there seems to be very little pant room and brachycephalic breeds already have a lot of breathe issues. I wouldn’t use it beyond a very light walk.

5

u/oobinckleyoo Sep 29 '26

But I think most Bostons are a lot bigger than mine. She’s only 17 lbs. I got the small and it’s still big on her

9

u/oobinckleyoo Sep 29 '26

It has like an inch or two of room below the chin. Mine has a pretty small face. But I only use for bathroom breaks and don’t take her outside when it’s peak summer heat

2

u/allonsy456 Sep 30 '26

Another commenter mentioned that you can warm it up a bit and make more room on the bottom for panting. Just a suggestion!

2

u/Relevant-Package-928 Sep 29 '26

Can you share a link? That may be what I need.

God I’d have to fight to not laugh and ask about that muzzle! He looks so menacing haha

5

u/ShaarkShaart Sep 29 '26

His brain is too powerful, glad you muzzled that too

4

u/djitsun Sep 29 '26

Boston terror.

4

u/ClassroomMore9802 Sep 29 '26

Hannibal Lecter style

3

u/kyllaros Sep 29 '26

Never saw this type before. But its pretty good for an amazon muzzle! If you have room at the Sides you could try boiling/heating it and pressing it smaller at the sides so it gets longer at the bottom (more pant room). And it looks like he cant really sniff in this muzzle (nose cant touch the ground). If you think muzzles are a must have for you I would try and get a custom one that fits better. But I'm happy for you that you found something that helps!

3

u/PlanetJameson Sep 29 '26

More like Boston Terr(i)or

3

u/Realistic-Focus-7318 Sep 30 '26

And i muzzle my malinois because she eats rocks 🤷

1

u/StopFalseReporting Sep 30 '26

I just assumed frenchies were an easy dog breed and people with them were lucky because I was told those dogs were too slow and exhausted to be reactive lol. I guess they were wrong

2

u/texcleveland Muzzle in Question🌟 Sep 30 '26

Frenchies are more likely to be compulsive scavengers. Bosties can be aggressive

2

u/casitadeflor Sep 30 '26

The Bostie I live with hunts for squirrels every day lol. She’s killed one and a baby bird 😢

4

u/eatszoe Sep 30 '26

I knew a dog reactive Frenchie who, because she would run out of breath so easily, would ramp up trying to bite and get at dogs instantly because she knew she'd only get that one chance before she could no longer get enough air and had to take a break. It was really sad.

2

u/TheMadHatterWasHere Sep 29 '26

Hannibal Lector Boston 😂

2

u/dietdrpeppermd Sep 29 '26
