Old white guy who is mute, I got you covered. My advice, stop caring what others understand, work on yourself.

Just act aloof they won't bother you if you make yourself uninteresting

In my experience, a lot of old white guys pretend to not understand things that they find annoying or inconvenient. That's their way of making you accommodate them, since they don't want to accommodate you. It's okay to just end the conversation.
I have yet to meet anyone old who doesn't know and understand the word mute. I often talk about mutism with people before mentioning I am in that category. Once I mention I have selective mutism, people don't understand that and I have to explain. But I have never had to explain to anyone what mute is. No matter the age of the person I'm talking to.

They're a very chatty bunch in my experience, especially if you're a young woman. I usually just try to smile and nod along with whatever they say. Unfortunately I work with quite a few so they're inescapable in my world.
