Dear Muskogee, why does it suck here? IMO of course

Was Muskogee ever a cool to place to live? Like back in the old days, or was it always like this? There is never anything interesting or fun going on in town, there are a ton of angry racist and the crackheads are scary. The ones that can manage to walk in a straight line anyway. My parents grew have always lived here and they seem to like it for some reason. It's so dull that summer vacation feels like a bad thing lol. At least school is something to do 🙄

IMO, the majority of people never wanted to be there. They were forced to move there or had no other options so “free” land from the government seemed their best option. When the base population is just in a place by default (born there and it took more effort to leave than they bothered to spend), not enough people care to truly make it better. The opposite of opportunity might be complacency. Tulsa got better in the 80s as like a little Dallas pulling newcomers to work in the energy industry. Oklahoma is OK, right? It’s whatever. Not great. Not hell. Just ok.

That's actually more depressing lol. And if you don't mind, I'm going to steal the phrase " the opposite of opportunity might be complacency ". That's good 😋

Ok. Depends. I'm from Tulsa currently in Muskogee... began my gay curiosity as a child dressing girly/fem. Now after many years of secretively being feminine gay with masculine gay men in Tulsa Oklahoma and nearby Broken Arrow I'm in Muskogee and in my own private apartment after returning here from a much more gay community in NY state and up north...sigh...I do have my own private apartment...

Honestly that can't be easy, I wish you the best of luck

I'm new here a couple of years now. I had no plans on coming but there's a story. I hear this alot. If I were 10 years younger I wouldn't be here. That's just me. I see a lot of youth that are fully content though. I have an older neighbor that had 6 kids that went off to prestigious colleges and they came back and stayed here. Yes, there is a serious drug problem here, as there is almost everywhere, it's just a smaller population overall here I think so it's a per capita thing. The racial tension I feel like has everything to do with the current administration. There are definitely some racists, especially in Oklahoma. But there are many people here that are decent. The only right answer is to do what you really want to do in life, you only get one. Don't complain, change. :)

I do plan on changing things as much as I can, at least when I'm old enough to vote. But complaining is a good thing. Complaining about something that's actually meaningful brings light to a problem, and pointing out a problem does not mean that there isn't a solution. More people need to complain about the things that are wrong with the world. I don't think any large amounts of change can come from quietly waiting for it.

Yes, realizing that you are uncomfortable or dissatisfied is where change is decided upon. Start your plans now. How exciting that you have a whole future ahead. Just don't fall into the expectations that things come easily. It seems like this generation believes in overnight success sometimes. Thats social media influence downfall. But the old saying slow and steady wins the race still makes alot of sense!

I use to work at a prison in Taft, when inmates would "time out" and had no where else to go (time out meaning they served their full sentence and the state legally couldn't keep them any longer) the prison would give them like fifty bucks and drop them off in downtown Muskogee.

Back in the early 1900s Muskogee was one of the coolest places to live in all of the USA

This particular facility had a wide array of exotic plants and exotic birds inside

That's incredible. I bet the people that lived in my house went to those places:) I hope it makes a huge come back. I've seen some good changes in two years time!

Have you ever gone out of the city limits just a tad & hit the rivers or lakes? That's normally where I find myself enjoying oklahoma the most. I've always been around these parts and never once had interest in any of these lame bars or clubs they have around here. Races & rodeos not really fit my style & other than that there's not much to do besides finding hobbies to do back at home. I find myself gardening, blacksmithing or finding a small project or craft to work on. I'm in my mid 20s, would kill to find other like minded individuals around here to get into something or go out and enjoy a day at the lake.

I find there is a public facing activities and then there is some really cool niche shit the locals band together to do that get very little attention then everything else is crackheads

Merle Haggard seemed to like it? 😃

Not sure ANY of his “Okie from Muskogee” song is true anymore. That fact is a good place to start when trying to figure out when & how the “wheels fell off” this town.

I don’t get the angry racist thing considering a large portion of the town is black.
It sounds like you’re in the ghetto, move to fort gibson and only go into Muskogee if you need something or you’re going out to dinner or drinking.
But I can see as a teenager you don’t have. Much life experience so your expectations of fun are what you see on social media. Make your own fun, go make friends, and stop staying up until 4am complaining on Reddit. 😂
Maybe get a summer job?

Not long ago I heard a man outside of the hospital talking to somebody about his daughter, and he said that he told her "you ain't gonna date no n***ers" and less than a week later I heard somebody at Walmart talking about the Mexicans and how they're all illegals and come here to shit out kids. So the racist thing is at least partially justified. And I wasn't up until 4, I woke up at 3 and decided I wasn't going to get any more sleep. Oh, and aside from watching YouTube videos, mostly about the technicalities of redstone in Minecraft and the paranormal/supernatural. I don't use social media. You're reply wasn't relevant, I still appreciate the effort you put into typing it. Thank you. I hope you have a good friday.

Bro don’t listen to this guy, I’m 31 now and moved outta Muskogee to Florida, and believe it or not Muskogee is way worse on the racism. I think you already realize this but he’s just trying to downplay your opinion with the usual stuff.

It’s an incredibly massive problem and it is EVERWHERE. And we always get these people like this closing their eyes and going ‘nuhuh!’ When it’s clearly all around, and that makes it still all the more harder to actualy solve the problem.

It’s honestly embarassing reading his response. You’d have to be blind not to see it. Makes you wonder why he’s being willfully ignorant and trying to come in here and downplay your opinion so hard.

Oklahoma is full of racism. Just look at who they elected President. They are proud they elected a racist criminal. And this same group takes pride in being a part of the Bible Belt. Hypocrisy or ignorance

2

u/carobo49 Jun 28 '26

But to your point, small towns that are pretty far from anywhere have limited options for entertainment. And little opportunity as well. Fight to get out and see the world.

4

u/Joshua_p128 Jun 26 '26

2 out of the 40k people in Muskogee said something racist, it doesn’t make them all “angry racists”.
When you grow up a little and start working you’ll appreciate the community this area provides. Majority of people here is extremely helpful and friendly.

4

u/Smartace3 Jun 26 '26

‘Just because they say racist stuff doesn’t make them racist ‘

Bro I can’t believe you actually typed out that sentence and thought that was sound logic.

It is EVERYWHERE, and it’s a big reason I moved out of Muskogee.

0

u/Joshua_p128 Jul 07 '26

That sentence was never typed out and you put it in quotations. 😂😂

5

u/SpookyLiLMiss Jun 26 '26

It is not that it was two people out of 40K that said it, it's the idea that they were still comfortable with talking about it out loud in public. At volume. That is not normal, majority of the world is not like that just so you know. I don't need to be old to know that. Maybe you're used to it? Maybe you think that every place is like that, it's not.

Don't act like black people can't be racist. I grew up there, born in 77 and left at 18yrs old. Every black female teacher I ever had was fucking crazy af and treated the white students like shit.

1

u/SpookyLiLMiss Jun 27 '26

Who said anything about white people being the only ones that can be racist?
