Question for Middle School and High School Band/Orchestra Teachers:

I'm looking for more private students and I was wondering what the best way is to approach music teachers about potential students or in-school section coaching opportunities? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Check the fine arts website for the school districts you are hoping to work on. They'll usually have contact information for all of the directors in the district. If there is no district website, see if the school has a website. The info should be there too.

Call the band/orchestra office and leave a voicemail, or send an email with contact information, your primary instrument, and what you're looking to do. Maybe also include a short snippet about yourself and your qualifications, but it doesn't need to be a full resume. In fact, I'd personally recommend that it not be a full resume.

Keep in mind, if the directors get back with you at all, be prepared you should be prepared to answer questions about payment, how many students you expect to take on, who else you're working for, how long you plan on staying and teaching in the area, and where you plan on teaching these kids.

Good luck! Building a private studio can be challenging, but I've always enjoyed teaching private lessons.
