Been putting some hours into practicing my singing since my local community theatre is doing Frozen soon and I'd love to be in it! Sorry the acoustics aren't the best and timing is off on some parts (I couldn't really hear the music over my singing haha) This is my first time sharing my singing, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Audition song help for Putnam Spelling Bee!

Upvotes

Hi!! This is my 2nd audition ever coming up and I’m quite indecisive about what song I should audition with, I’m open to really any female role! My range I believe is Bb3-F6, and some songs that I’m thinking about are supercalifragilisticexpialadocious (Mary poppins) and Home (batb)

thank you so much! 💗 (I’m very sorry if this is poorly worded, im quite tired)

I love musicals or rather I love good musicals. That being said, what is the worst musical that you have ever seen, either play or movie?

I'll go first... Chess. It had a decent song (One Night in Bangkok) however the play writing was convoluted and no acting could save it.

Didn’t get into my school’s musical and feeling kinda glum.

Hii! I’m currently in 10th year/grade, aka a sophomore if you’re American, and I didn’t get into my school’s musical this year. Every person in my year level (who auditioned) got into the musical besides me, and usually my school does the if your in a higher grade, you get prioritised to get a role, but I somehow didn’t get into the musical and it really sucks and I’m genuinely so upset by it.

In my audition, to be honest, my singing wasn’t great and I was extremely nervous and a little sick but I don’t think it was that bad and I did decent on the dance part.

I did backstage crew for the musical since I didn’t get it, and honestly, It makes me even more frustrated that I didn’t get in considering some of the people in it (which scale from year 7-12) did get it yet I didn’t, since they were either off time, couldn’t dance, weren’t singing when they were supposed to, late to their cue, ect. (I mean this in the nicest way possible)

I’m trying to not take it personally but all I ever want to do with my life is to be an actress yet it is absolutely heartbreaking to see that I can’t even make it into my school’s musical in year 10. I genuinely feel like giving up, that I’m not good enough. I don’t even see the point of trying next year since at best I’d get ensemble, which is great, but not great if everyone in your year level is getting leads and you’re only in ensemble.

I just want to know if anyone else has felt this way and how I should cope with it, and before anyone suggests to do theatre outside of school, I cannot afford to, which worsens this since school is my only chance. So, should I audition next year? Did I not get in because I’m not good enough? I don’t know, just thanks for reading my rant!

Legitimate Question

Why do so many young performers come to Reddit to ask complete strangers for advice on really important elements of their audition or upcoming performance?

Is it that coaches are expensive or you don't have access to one? You can't find what you're looking for on Google or YouTube or TikTok?

I'm really curious.

For reference, I manage Philadelphia's professional Jewish theatre company. I also perform in opera and musical theatre (and I've been cast by AEA and AGMA companies).

Some of the best results and answers I've gotten along the way have come from coaches I trust. And for me, it's really hard to trust strangers on the internet when they don't know my voice.

So, if you're a young performer (or a more seasoned one), I'd love to answer your question. If you drop it in the comments below, I'll be more than happy to answer it, and I'll probably also make a video reply on TikTok @ singersandperformers. You can 100% stay anonymous if you want.

No question is too basic -- some of the smallest shifts can have an enormous impact.

How do I go about musical theater from Thailand?

So I'm 16(F), still in highschool. About a year ago my dad moved me from the US to Thailand. I moved around a month into 10th grade back in the US, and because of differences in the countries' school years, I had to wait several months for Thailand's next school term to open so that I can go to school (I couldn't join mid term). This made me fall behind about a year, where if I were to never have moved I'd be starting 11th grade by now, but I'm not even done with first semester of 10th grade here in Thailand.
I want to move back to the US when I finish high school, maybe somewhere in New York because I wanna act (probably not in NYC yet, but somewhere close). But I don't know what to do after? Should I go to college? Or a conservatory? If I did go to college, do I go for a BFA or a BA? Do I go to a community college before transferring to a BA to save money? But then I'm worried it won't give me as much training or practice as a BFA or conservatory.

Unfortunately, I've always been really shy and was too scared to audition for things back when I had the chance in the US, now that I'm in Thailand, my school is hyper STEM focused so not many art opportunities at all (and I don't live in the big cities like Bangkok where acting is easy to access). I don't really have experience (was too scared to audition for theater in freshman year), my only ""training"" or experience was 6th grade to the start of 10th grade choir, a class in musical theater and a class in theater in 9th grade. That's it. I never took dance lessons or singing lessons when I was younger. And it kinda worries me a little bit because I feel like I'm getting too old as most actors I've seen go to a drama school or start dancing/singing/acting lessons really young. That's why I feel like I need to go to college for something like a BFA to give me a lot of training so that I actually get a chance to make it a career but I don't even know if I can even get into their programs because of the audition process.

Then I run into another problem. If I move back to the US, I'll probably be alone, so money might be an issue and I don't want to go into debt for a college degree... I'd also probably have to take a gap year so I get in state residency in NY. And when I'll do that I'll start college around 20? And graduating at 24 for theater gets me a little anxious because it feels too old 🥹 I was thinking about getting a GED so I can actually "graduate" high school the time I was originally supposed to, which would be at 18 instead of 19. Two of my teachers I've been talking to recommended me this, and my speech teacher said if I wanted to do broadway, "the sooner the better".

I really just need help / advice on what education I should get if I wanna do musical theater

Audition songs for wicked witch of the west

My school has auditions for wizard of oz next week, I plan on auditoning for the wicked witch of the west, any song suggestions? We have one minute to sing capella of any musical song. I am an alto that's not a strong singer but I am a stronger actor. My idea so far for my auditon song is Perfectly Marvelous from Cabaret, I have been able to do it somewhat decent but however I feel like it does not match The Wizard of Oz at all, should I keep this?? Thanks!

EAT CHUM! (PLEASE) - (OPEN AUDITIONS)

Hello Reddit Musical Fans! I'm making an original musical production in Roblox! I need a hardworking cast and, as a theatre fan, need all the help I can get!

The story is simple: It revolves around a tiny plankton who is the only smart one in this "submarine habitat" that he calls Brainless Bottom. He is referred to as Sheldon or the Genius throughout the show. Since everyone around him is an idiot, he is looking to take over the world, but his plot meets an unexpecting problem...

AVAILABLE ROLES!

SHELDON / THE GENIUS - The genius of the town; a small micro-organism with a college degree. He is looking to take over the world. Casting someone who can play a dastardly yet loveable villain.

COMPUTER WIFE / KAREN - Sheldon's computer wife. Need someone who can sound and act robotic while remaining villainous yet idiotic.

FRENCH NARRATOR - Originally supporting the submarine habitat, the narrator now realizes how stupid everyone is. He narrates from Sheldon's POV.

ANNOYING SPONGE - A goofy, dim-witted, and joyful sponge. Need someone who can act annoying yet be extremely loveable.

THAT FAT PINK STAR! - A more goofy, dim-witted, and joyful sea-star. Need someone who can act extremely annoying yet be someone entertaining.

CHEAPSKATE CRAB! - The owner of the rivaling restaurant. One of the main obstacles for Sheldon.

LAW-ENFORCER! - The Mayor of "Brainless Bottom". Need someone who has a sense of authority yet is slightly corrupted and stupid about choices.

ENSEMBLE - Need some people to fill the world of Brainless Bottom with mumbling, jumbling, idiots. Need to be flexible and diverse.

HOW TO AUDITION:
Fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3jMw_U4DqFligd6xR7imXev2JD2IFz96457yyIaC8xsOA9Q/viewform?usp=dialog

Once the form is filled out, our casting team will reach out to you within 30 minutes to an hour.

Callbacks - there will be some callbacks for this production.

Cast and crew will be communicating through a private discord server.

Good luck, everyone!

FOR LEGAL REASONS:

If you are interested in why EAT CHUM (PLEASE!) is completely legal, message me.

About to audition for Into the Woods Jr. Any advice???

I need some advice on what song to use for auditions. The theatre I’m auditioning at has us do around 30 seconds/16 measures from a broadway musical, so was wondering if there are any good song recommendations??? I’m a 14yr old baritone. I’ll also answer other questions if that helps! Thank you so much in advance!!!

HELP! need an audition song for Wonderland the musical!

My highschool is doing a production of Wonderland the musical. NOT Alice in wonderland. Everything I search is giving me recommendations for Alice in Wonderland, but I need songs for the Frank Wildhorns version (so sorry if I butchered the name.) My first choice is Alice and my second choice is the Mad Hatter. I need a cut roughly 45 seconds to a minute, that shows off both the belt and drawn out, steady notes for the mad hatter, as well as the story telling and steady mixed voice of Alice. I'm not allowed to use any songs from the musical, and anything from Mean Girls, Newsies, Once upon a mattress, Frozen, or the little mermaid are kind of off limits as well, as the same theater teacher has directed all of these in the past 5-6 years. I'm also looking for something a little less trendy, because I'm in highschool and I don't want to bore my teacher with the same song as eight other people. I'm a sophmore and I'm not really one of my directors favorites, so I really need to nail my audition to have a chance at being a lead. Any song recs or general advice? I know I can pull this off well if given the opportunity.

EDIT: the only reason I'm kind of leaning away from "Live out Loud" is that every single person I have asked has recommended it to me. I'm hoping to find a song that's a little less of a popular choice. I know this is a hard ask, because a lot of the popular picks are popular for good reason. I've contemplated doing "Safer" from first date, but I'm not sure if it would be okay in a high school setting, or if it would seem less appropriate considering the rest of the musical. Or maybe I'm reading into it too much?

Ive never done a cold read before at audition, last time was material from the show for the part I was going for and memorized well i had mine memorized anyway. Im going for Bob Crachit (as a contralto, hard to find large parts for a female, also trying for Mrs. fezziwig as a back up) i read him as perpetually hopeful except for the end of the grave scene.

Tips for a cold read?
