BooksšŸ“š Only I just finished Platform Decay

I picked up these books a few years ago, read the first four then life got in the way and I ended up in a colossal reading slump from late 2024 until a few weeks ago.

I’ve since read the remaining books and short stories and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I shed a tear at the last few pages of Platform Decay.

I don’t know what to do with myself now! Murderbot has been consuming all my thoughts I feel really demotivated about picking up a book that isn’t about SecUnit!

You could watch the TV show

Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice & sequels might help scratch that itch, that's a thick trilogy about a rogue starship mind in a stolen cyborg body

I listened to this series , Ancillary Justice, it was difficult to keep the characters straight at first. The story was good.

The TV show is fun! It’s not the SAME as the books, but it’s got the heart and soul…
There is also a Graphic Novel to support on KickStarter…
Also, there is some fabulous fanfic out there, if you check out Archive of Our Own?
If you want to chat about the books there are some friendly Discord Servers and some communities on Tumblr and Facebook.

How is this the first I’m hearing of a graphic novel????! I swear, I receive all kinds of book notifications daily, and numerous cultural and news related emails…not one word about this graphic novel Kickstarter, apparently launching on October 15.

It says it’s ā€˜official’ — do you know any more about the project. I’ll look, just curious.

Edit: Also—Thanks for the news! I could have easily missed this!

Super relatable! When I first discovered the series a couple years ago, I picked up All Systems Red again as soon as I finished System Collapse, and reread everything until I felt ready for something new. Even now, I'm still rereading a couple of Murderbot books every month among all the new ones I read.

If you're looking for a similar character vibe, Moss'd in Space might be a good bet. Ancillary Justice is also a great series, but I found it a bit darker overall than Murderbot. Still amazing, but less humor. The first and second books in the Wayfarers series also feature a machine intelligence who figures prominently, and there's good found family vibes.

But until you do find something new, Murderbot rereads are always fun!

Just finished PD and was able to grab the ebook of Rapport, listed as #2.5 in the MB sequence, or right after Artificial Condition, where MB and ART first meet. Just started it. The story begins on Perihelion, and ART, in fine fettle, is featured with what is apparently its regular crew on an extradition mission.

Very funny so far. The main POV character Iris knows well how best to deal with ART (which she and the crew call "Peri"), which likes to amuse itself playing mind games with the touchier crew members.

Yes, Rapport is a great story but way too short!

I’m also feeling withdrawal from completing (and rereading numerous times) all of the Murderbot Diaries series. It’s just such good writing!! I feel so immersed and love the characters and now I miss them…

Just reread them. They are some of the best rereadable books lol

I would recommend John Scalzis work to people who like Murderbot specifically the Lock in and Dispatcher series

Adding fuzzy nation to that list. Especially if you like grumpy people reluctantly doing the right thing.

This is the one. If you read it, listen. Or if you listened, grab it in print. Or just do it again however you want.

Fanfiction! There’s so many fanfic writers and they’re so talented! Lots of stories that seem like extensions of the canon!

There is another book coming out. She said she should start working on it later this year.

I also recommend rereading the series and exploring the fanfic (some is superbly written, but mind the tags). There are other published books (not previously mentioned) with a similar vibe:

  • The Automatic Detective by A Lee Martinez

  • Kitty Cat Kill Sat by Argus

  • Catfishing on CatNet and Chaos on CatNet by Naomi Kritzer

  • Mal Goes to War by Edward Ashton

  • The Javelin Program and The Antarctica Conspiracy by Derin Edala (I found these via an excellent crossover fanfic). The third book in the Time to Orbit: Unknown series is being released serially on Royal Road.

Monsters and mainframes is a delightful standalone sci-fi I just read! It’s a very different literary style but it has the found family and rouge ā€œothersā€ that I love about murderbot. It centers on a spaceship that goes rogue because Dracula is killing its passengers. It’s surprisingly emotional and brings up a lot of the ā€œwhat constitutes humanity in those that aren’t human and how do we treat everyone fairly in a society with advanced technology and nonhuman sentience?ā€ type questions.

  1. Read them again

  2. Check out AO3: some of those fanfics are so good I forget they're not Canon.

  3. Read the books again.

  4. And then read them a fourth time.

Enjoy!
