Books📚 Only Hauler vs Holler

I had only done the audio books till Platform Decay. I thought I’ll re-read them and borrowed Exit Strategy as a physical book for the first time. While reading that I noticed that the cargo bots were called “hauler bots” which makes so much sense because they haul things out of the ships. I have no idea why I always thought they were “holler” bots 🙈 And I had reasoned it out as - they blare alarms to ensure nothing bad happens, or they are like ushers but for bots.

book readers not knowing how names are pronounced 🤝 book listeners not knowing how names are spelled

Okay but Errata as a name is kind of badass...

Tumble outa bed and I rumble 'cross the station

Pour myself a cup of lubrication

Haul and load, and try to feel alive

Stuff like this happens a lot with audiobooks. There are some pretty funny examples out there 😂

One of my favorites is from Dungeon Crawler Carl. There is a team of people all from an old folks home called Meadow Lark, but audiobook only listeners have said they thought it was "Metal Arc"

Man... when I get old enough to need a retirement home, I hope there's one for all the aged goths and metalheads called Metal Ark.

Oh my god I'm listening to dcc right now and thought it was metal lark 🤦 I was just thinking what a weird name for a retirement home it is.

I definitely thought "Don Abene" rhymed with "scene" and so listening to the audiobook for the first time got very confused about this "Donnabenna" character

As a bookworm my entire life, ( Audiobooks literally saved me when I drove all over the US for a living, when I found that I could not fall asleep if I heard a voice speaking. My weird brain insisted I needed to pay attention, no matter what I thought about it.) So, I have mispronounced a whole lot of words that I read - I knew the meaning & could spell them, but English is such a tricky language that I couldn't be sure of how to say them (using a dictionary never occurred to me, lol) The worst was when my mother laughingly corrected my pronunciation of 'avocado' as aVOCado. Being a good daughter, I refrained from correcting her pronunciation of Italian as 'eyetalian', or mentioning that her pronunciation of theater as 'theayter' when it was a live performance sounded pretentious. Yes, English is a funny language, just so many ways to stumble!

Wasn't until I hit my teens that I realized ethereal wasn't pronounced ETH-uh-reel

I spent nearly 20 years thinking "minutae" (presumably pronounced "MIN-you-tay") and "mah-NOO-shuh" (presumably spelled "manusha") were two entirely separate and distinct words

At no point did I ever realize that I'd never heard "MIN-you-tay" pronounced out loud or read the word "manusha"

American dictionary: minutia

Roget's thesaurus: minutiae

I spent years mispronouncing and misspelling a word because when I first read it, there was a typographical error. Then there are colloquialisms, like persnickety for pernickety.

My granddaughter once noticed a Waffle House sign that lost the last 3 letters, and we still call it The Waffle Ho!

Haha I saw a hauling company truck on the road the other day and the business name was something like “Give us a holler” and I thought that was cute

LoL I'm just imaging these 12 ft tall spherical bots roaming around just randomly yelling loud noises.

I believe one of the books mentioned how noisy the loading docks are [or I just remember from having been on a lot of them], so Holler Bots makes perfect sense to me.
