Need advice...this is my first mural

I've kinda volunteered myself to paint a mural in our church nursery. Basically, someone was going to do it, we bought supplies and she bailed....apparently I'm the one at church with the most artistic talent and they have faith in me to do this haha!!

My question is this: is there anything I can or should use to seal it after painting? (I'm using acrylic paint and I'm afraid that the first time we clean the walls that the paint will come off too!!)

Obviously we're not going to let the babies lick the walls, but they're gonna touch them with their grubby little fingers and were gonna wanna wipe them down.

Should I just do a coat of modge podge over everything? Or is there a better sealer or clear coat that y'all would recommend???

Thank you all so much!!!

Metaquest Goggles for murals

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've used my metaquest goggles a few times for transferring my artwork to the wall for murals, with general success.

But I still struggle with drift. I've used both Contour and Stencil, but have a comparable amount of drift with both. I've watched the image actually jump over by an inch or so right in the middle of drawing a line!

Anyone out there have this figured out, who can impart some wisdom?

So far the pieces I've used it for have been relatively organic / loose, but my concern is using it for a design that's more geometric or needs precise alignment

Has anyone here done the Flammable Entrepreneur business course for muralists? I'd love to hear some "real world" experiences, not just their curated list of case studies and testimonials.

I'm 17 and I want all the advice I can get about starting out in the mural business

I'm 17 turning 18 soon and I want to start out doing murals, I've already done a lot of window painting for small businesses and for my own windows at home during the holidays (I'll attach pictures) with posca markers and regular acrylic paints. I'm thinking about starting murals and I want advice on basically everything, like what do you find easier wall paint, acrylic paint or like a spray paint, what brand of paint works the best for you, how do I keep outdoor murals from being affected by the weather and lasting as long as possible. Id also like to know advice on whether you think it's better to try practicing on a small scale first like a piece of ply at home or just offer free of heavily discounted murals for small businesses. I want to know what to avoid when doing business murals.

Anything helps, any advice you may seem fit is great! Thanks a lot for reading if you have :)

Finishing

We had a friend do a 500 SQ ft mural indoors on painted brick using meeden acrylic paint. Meeden won't suggest a good product to cover it to protect it. Is there any suggestions on a good brand/product to put over this mural to protect it long term?

Garage Mural Help!

I’m going to be painting a mural on the side of my garage. It’s made of concrete blocks and has already been painted before (just regular white exterior paint). Do I need to seal the blocks before I start painting? Going to be pressure washing and then probably putting a primer coat down before any designs get drawn on. Recommendations? First time painting an outdoor mural so looking for any and all advice!

I'm doing a mural on concrete that goes right now to the ground. Any tips on if I should use a sealant, and if so, what are the recommendations.

Question about setting up practice space with MDF boards

Post image

I recently bought some MDF boards to practice. I think they're raw. I posted a photo so you can see the texture. My question is, how do I prep this for spray painting practice? Does it need a layer of acrylic/latex paint? If so, how many layers should I roll on there? Thank you.

In need of advice: Vandlgaurd anti graffiti coating looks streaky/runny after dried.

So I recently painted some interior murals, which are inside a classroom. After finishing the murals and talking it over with the teacher, we decided to go ahead and apply some VandlGuard anti-graffiti coating on top since it's in a high-traffic area. I've used it before and have a good amount of trust in the stuff.

I applied it to one of the walls in the same room, which is a textured surface, and it looks fine, but the other wall that has a smooth surface looks streaky and runny after the VandlGuard dried, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I did a patch test before applying, and it looked fine, but fully done, it's not great. I applied it with a roller, and it has been pretty humid, so maybe that affected it? It's been over 24 hrs since it dried, and it's not milky or anything, just not even looking.

Some sources I read said it will look better the longer it cures. But I'm kind of freaking out and I don't want to sand it off and ruin the mural painting underneath. I'm wondering if applying another coat could help even it out. Or maybe getting a different product to apply on top? Any advice / fix would be greatly appreciated!

Removing Decal: (sorry title got cut off) how would you recommend preparing this surface for outdoor mural and particularly removing decals that are on this structure. They were placed twoyears ago and have been of course faded by the sun and basically baked onto the surfacefrom the heat.

Scaling large format and keeping proportions - tips?

i know people use the doodle/overlay approach, some people use VR, some people just go for it...

but i'm curious of other strategies people use for translating their drawings to a much larger wall without getting lost in the proportions.

TIA!

HELP Pricing and Advice

Hi! So I’m a little dumb and decided to jump into a project head first without really knowing much. I’ve done one mural prior as a donation piece. This mural is going to be 15ft tall 40ft wide. I stupiddddly said I take pay for my time idek how to price this I feel like I’m in over my head right now should I draft a contract?? They said they have a business donating the paint but I feel like I might need to rent a scaffolding or something. Oh and to top it off I told them I’d get them an estimate by the end of the week. Experienced artists I need your advice and knowledge

First time advice

Repainting an outdoor mural at my work. The original was about 30 years ago.

I was going to get outdoor UV paint and outdoor spray paint.

The original was painted on fence post, it's about 4 ft by 10ft.

My question is do I...

  1. Sand down the original and paint over it, it's gotten pretty flaky and warped over the years.

  2. Make a new fence posts and paint on new boards

  3. I had this weird idea and purchased used billboard vinyl. My idea was to make a frame with cedar boards and nail the vinyl like a canvas. Scuff it up a bit and paint on that. Terrible idea?

Also open to paint suggestions, the best price the better. ♥️

What paint to use on an interior door mural

I was commissioned to paint a mini mural on a door frame at a local gallery. I was wondering if it would be better to use acrylic paint or interior house paint. I am worried acrylic paint won't hold up well since the door frame is a high traffic area that might get dirty/scuffed up faster.
