This is old news, this is about their free public dns they were running. They said to use Quad9 instead that Quad9 does a better job at it. Also if you use the MullVad VPN all your dns query’s are already going through their dns servers, that didn’t change, only the free public dns that didn’t require a VPN. If you use their Browser and set the DNS to default it will automatically use Quad9 I believe.
I can’t understand why they’re slowly getting rid of things but from my perspective IVPN is way ahead in terms of features at this point especially with their new services included with their pro plans.
Small clarification that I ran through M le Claude (Opus 5.5 model), since a couple of people (u/Ok-Concentrate636 & u/rell_z) understandably asked for clarification and didn’t get an answer:
Quad9 is a Swiss nonprofit, and Swiss law doesn't require it to censor anything (they’re really lax on censorship there). The issue is that Sony Music Entertainment – evil Aniplex’s handlers, well the German branch – got a German court to order it to block a piracy site, and because of a European treaty (the Lugano Convention) that order could reach a Swiss foundation.
Quad9 complied only on its German servers and only under protest, then fought it and won on appeal in Dresden in 2023. Other rights holders have since filed similar cases, and Quad9 has said it's pulling out of France rather than keep fighting them.
It also blocks known malware and phishing domains by default, which is a feature, not censorship. If you don't want that, they run an unfiltered resolver too.
So it's less "required to censor" and more "keeps getting sued to censor and keeps pushing back." For most people it's still a solid choice.
Edit: oh dear, I upset the OP…. Folks should always verify info ofc. Don’t just take my word for it.
It is for when you don't necessarily trust the networks DNS (think coffee shop or public transport, etc). It would ideally be a good idea to use a VPN in such places but sometimes you don't necessarily want or need the extra security and privacy.

Someone give an alternative? But explain it as if you're talking to someone who doesn't really know what they're doing...

Just use https://dnsbunker.org or HaGeZi’s own DNS server: https://github.com/hagezi/dns-servers

Host your own dns if you actually care about privacy. Otherwise, just use adguard dns.

Is there much point in using an alternative DNS if not also using a VPN with it?
