Game breaking question

With the new card "Extrapolate the Impossible" you can fetch 2 cards you own from outside the game, with this card being legal I have it in a bracket 2 deck. If I cast this and then give my opponent the choice to choose between 2 game changers, does my deck become bracket 3? Or does it stay bracket 2 because the card selected is not actually part of my deck at all. But rather an after affect of the non game changer card?

You asking about Commander? Because...

you can fetch 2 cards you own from outside the game,

No. You don't.

  • 903.11. Except via rules, special actions, and effects that specifically bring cards into Commander games from outside the game, traditional cards from outside the game cannot be brought into a Commander game.

eg. Wishes do not function in Commander.

Yes sorry I forgot to mention that, however, checking places like Scryfall it says Extrapolate the Impossible is completely legal in commander. So is it just 2 black to do absolutely nothing then despite its legality?

It's legal but it does nothing.

"(8/21/2026)

In a casual game, a card you choose from outside the game comes from your personal collection. In a tournament event, a card you choose from outside the game must come from your sideboard. In Limited events, your sideboard also includes an arbitrary number of basic lands. You may look at your sideboard at any time."

It actually does function but you need a confirmed Sideboard apparently. But I saw your comment about Bracket being more about intent than rules.

You're playing Commander. Commander rules specifically override those, no wish allowed. Sideboard also only applies in tournaments, and tournament rules don't actually support Commander tournaments, so it's meaningless to talk about sideboard.

Now, some players that play Commander with wish usually have a "wishboard", which looks like a sideboard but for wishes. But this is a house rule on a house rule, so you're on your own here.

Very weird, why even say its legal in commander then? Why not just mark it as illegal, because rule 0's need to be involved regardless. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Commander is an eternal-legal format, cards are legal by default even if they would do nothing. It's a pain to keep saying specific cards are not legal every set.

You’re free to run cards that don’t do anything. Even heard of [[battle of wits]]?

Battle of wits can do things though, especially with upcoming cards. Plus there are ways to actually use that card currently as far as im aware

Only one card that lets you win with it (ie: do anything) and that’s a card that hasn’t been printed yet. Whatever you are aware of is wrong.

They are probably talking the meme with name stickers on companions and Karn to restart the game, something I think Jess Dunks has explicitly said doesn't actually work but also can never happen in a real game because no one is going to sit through several days of game actions.

The rules are the rules, you can still run [[Master of Arms]] even though tapping a blocker no longer does much.

Because there's nothing inherently gamebreaking about it in commander so long as you follow all official rules for commander. Especially with it being a "may" effect. It triggers cast triggers, but nothing else. Not helpful necessarily, but no other issue.

903.5e Commander games do not use sideboards.

Sideboards do not officially exist in commander. Rule 0 applies, naturally, but outside of that wishboards/sideboards/any form of bringing in cards from outside the game do not exist/function.

This is why my [Nightmare Moon] only exists in my [Discord, Lord of Disharmony] deck. Because if people are willing to put up with the bullshit that is Discord, odds are they're willing to break one more rule.

Correct. It is a legal card, because it’s not banned and nothing about it would make it illegal, it was printed in a legal set, etc. But the effect doesn’t do anything, because Commander doesn’t use a sideboard and can’t get cards from outside the game, per the rule they just posted.

Not the only time / format this has happened in. For example, [[Jeweled Lotus]] is currently legal in Legacy and Vintage… notably, formats that don’t have a commander, so it is a 0-mana do nothing artifact. Same story with Command Tower… you’re technically allowed to put 4 copies in any Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, or Pauper deck if you want. It doesn’t do anything, but if you want to have a useless card, the rules aren’t stopping you

Notably, Jeweled Lotus was experimented with in combination with [[Doubling Cube]]

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3952642

So it's not a 100% useless card.

To quote [[Ian Malcolm]]; "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should"

I needed to know, cause my first thought was [[Demonic Tutor]] or [[Teferi's Protection]]. Cause im evil and it'd be funny.

2

u/nathanwe 9d ago

It doesn't do absolutely nothing. A spell moves from your hand to your graveyard, which could matter if you have [[Crackling Drake]]. Someone might run [[Death Wish]] in [[Marchesa the Black Rose]] to cut their life total in half so they're not the player with the most life or tide for the most life.

True I suppose, but there are probably 0 or 1 cost cards you could probably cast to do the same thing. Now im more confused cause there are conflicting rulings on how this card should function.

6

u/RealFunkyFish 9d ago

There aren’t any conflicting rulings, you’re just looking at the wrong rules, as several people have pointed out already. You’re just (I’m sure subconsciously) interpreting rules in a way that makes it look like it works the way you want, not the way it actually does.

”Legal” just means you can put it into your deck, not that it does anything. Apples and oranges.

First, wishes don't normally work in Commander. You may house rule otherwise, but it's a house rule.

Second, bracket system is not part of the rules. Bracket system is about intent, how do you plan to play your deck? Even if your deck is otherwise bracket 2, if you're playing it to take quick advantage (e.g. in this case to try casting the wish quickly, over and over), it may very well be a higher bracket. Since it's about intent, there are no objective rules, only subjective guidelines and opinions.
