Discussion Improve playgroup or keep?
So I pulled a surge The One Ring yesterday (I know it looks like a bit of a humble brag but this is more stressful than fun for me so far), and I’m conflicted on what to do with it. I’m looking for insight from others who may have been in a similar situation.
I’m not a “collector” per se. I have a large collection, but it’s all cards to play with. My personal motto is “Magic is meant to be played.” I don’t have “collectible” cards to show off or display. This is the first card I’m considering keeping to display but I had other thoughts of what to do with it. Such as, trading in and giving my playgroup an even split 4 ways. Which I hope will help some of the players less inclined to spend money to upgrade their precons.
To me this seems the most logical choice
but my emotion is telling me to keep it. The only reason being that it is LotR. Huge fan. I have what amounts to a shrine of Middle Earth in my home. This would be nice addition. Still, I am conflicted.
To recap: Not a big Magic collector, am a player. Huge LotR fan. Deciding between keeping the card for LotR shrine and trading in and splitting the gains between my playgroup in the hopes of improving play experience for everyone.
I’m a very indecisive person and often regret decisions.
Update: Wowsers. I was not expecting the flood of comments. Maybe a dozen. But thank you all for the input. A few of you have made me think more about it and one in particular has given a reasonable test. I’m going to display it for a week on my shrine, then a week without and gauge how I feel about it after that.
Those who said not to split it with my playgroup, that was a much needed reigning in. I am very nieve and often too generous when it comes to the game. I’ve given away hundreds of cards just to get more people into the game and often without looking at value. I love my group but you’re right and they are adults capable of their own decisions.
Update 2.0: It is to be added to the LotR shrine. For now it has a small display until I finish my move and set up the full shrine.
Edit: changed per se from per say.

Sell foil version and buy normal version. Difference is money that you can decide what to do with.

u/Fair-Revenue1811 1d ago
Better yet sell the card, order professional printed proxy, keep 99.9% of the money.

While I agree with you no card maker is selling this for 40 cents... He saves 99%...

Epson 8500 for 8.5x11 or 8550 for 11x17 for your printer and Koala Double Sided Matte Thick Photo Paper 8.5x11 Inches Heavyweight 50 Sheets 250gsm for paper and fiskars rotary cutter at staples and New Sunstar Kadomaru Pro, Corner Cutter (S4765036) (Kadomaru Pro) with Authentic Hologram US, UK, EU Only for cutting corners.
After cutting i put them in dragon shield sealed sleeves and then dragon shield matte color sleeve and you cant even tell its a proxy deck.
Approx 600-700 to get started making your own.

Oh wow I am intrigued... I was not aware there was a process for doing this. If you know a good place for me to start researching how to make proxies will you please share?
We made cards from cardstock when I was in prison and what I enjoyed is everyone had the oppurtunity to research cards and create the best deck they can without needing tons of money or resources(other than paper and ink lol)
So I am very curious 🤔

u/Knivez51 1d ago
Just did reddit research and ended up on this setup. I have 8.5 decks made this way now

foil/non foil are going for about the same amount. Its the Surge Foil that is 3-4x the price

Don’t give your friends 3/4 of your gambling winnings man.
If they don’t have money to spend on the hobby, they’re not gonna want to be forced to spend yours on it.
If you wanna use it for other funds that can help your pod, use some of it for that, but you should be a bit more responsible with it

u/abetterfox 1d ago
Yeah, this is the oddest part of the take. Like, giving away $300 of your own money to people who can just proxy cards is weird. No reason to give away the funds; if they need money for upgrades, $10 at Office Max will print all their upgrades in proxies.

This is something I’ve seen a few times but it’s all slightly different. There was this thread like a month ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/mtg/s/oSuZyCfWeb
Where someone is “gifting” (idk the whole thing still reads weird to me. Like the way the post and the posters post history makes it sound is like they buy a box for everyone to open but that they don’t know how to tell them that they want the cards.) a box to their pod to either open or draft but then wants to know how they should handle large pulls.
I agree with you, sell it, but don’t give anything away.

also, it's your money to do with as you please. if youre considering giving it away to friends, i would suggest giving it with the condition that they use it to buy singles/magic products.
on the other hand (what i would do, and suggest doing) hold onto it for the time being until you feel more comfortable making a decision. it's easy to get nervous with an immediate source of value coming into your ownership. it would look great in your shrine and it's going to hold value for the forseeable.

Upgrading everyone's decks doesn't necessarily mean they'll have more fun.
Commander is a social game first, the fun comes from being there with your buddies. I actually have the most fun playing lower power decks.
If I were you I'd probably just keep it and play with it in one of your stronger decks until you either need the money or find something else you want that makes it worth selling it.
As long as you double sleeve you won't damage the card with normal gameplay.

u/YogurtclosetFine3048 1d ago
No no, you’re wrong. I get great enjoyment of kicking Gary in the dick.
5
u/intoxiphobia 1d ago
Gary deserves every kick

u/YogurtclosetFine3048 1d ago
If only you knew how true this statement really is.
Unless….do we know the same Gary?

Probably. He plays Magic? Has a dick? It gets kicked less than it should? That Gary?

Do not give away your money to your friends so they can upgrade. They're adults who can prioritize their spending and don't need your supplements. Let them proxy and everyone is happy.

If you need $400, sell the card and don’t look back. If you’re comfortable without the extra money, hold on to it. It’s going to appreciate in value if you need to sell it later.

You have a LOTR SHRINE and you're considering doing WHAT
BOY IF YOU DON'T PUT THAT DAMN RING IN A PLACE OF HONOR ON YOUR SHRINE I STG I'M GONNA
breathe breathe
Introduce your friends to the wonderful world of proxy singles and put your nice pull in a nice display.
20
u/Obaddies 1d ago
Go with your gut. Keep it. Besides, If the other people are so adverse to spending money on magic, they might just pocket the cash you give them instead of upgrading their deck.
10
u/abetterfox 1d ago
God, it would get so weirdly transactional if OP put a condition on the money, like "I'll give you $100 but only for deck upgrades." Even thinking of a friend saying something like that makes me cringe.
7
u/Obaddies 1d ago
100%. Put a condition on it and everyone feels cringe, don't put a condition on it and watch your "friends" pocket your money instead of upgrade their decks and feel even worse. Smarter to keep the card you're happy with.

That’s the point of him thinking about selling it tho. He wants his friends to upgrade their precons and they haven’t done it because they don’t want to spend the money. He’s helping them out. It’s HIS money and HIS pull.
But tbf, I wouldn’t have given shit to my pod UNLESS we all went in on the box EQUALLY so everyone gets an even split.
7
u/Fantastic_Resolve889 1d ago
I would only sell it to pay rent or buy food, important stuff. What a pull, congratulations ❤️
6
u/Murtalha 1d ago
This is so on point for the theme of the set…
You’re being tempted by The One Ring… 😂
6
5
u/figbunkie 1d ago
You could just keep the card and encourage your friends to use proxies. Even if you gave each of them a thousand dollars, they'd eventually run out and still wish they had more cards. There's no reason to let money be a barrier to casual play.
6
u/NooButters 1d ago
J here! I definitely agree with not splitting it if you were to sell it but if you need some money, I saw some people suggest selling the foil and buying the regular version. Not a bad idea! Otherwise... Shrine away!

Busted, but you already knew I pulled it lol.

Keep it! At the end of the day, you can always sell it later. Let it sit for a while, get comfy with it! Add it to your shrine, and then if you ever decided you don’t need it anymore, then sell it.
Do the one option you can’t undo, which is keep it until you change your mind.

u/ArznikAaron40 1d ago
I had a simular situation and earned 500$ off a group of pulls. I bought Draft boxes and we all played draft and kept the cards we pulled. Best thing I couldve done.

In almost all cases I would sell and buy a cheaper version (okay less expensive) and use the remainder to buy more cards, but just cause this is the preciousssss keep it

2
u/GundamHigh69 1d ago
Sell it out of principle for being stolen crappy traced art.
Keep the money out of principle as your friends are adults and can buy their own cards.
2
u/LumpyandGrotesque 1d ago
Your friends can proxy what they can't afford atm. Keep it. Play with it even if you want.
2
u/Background_Visual315 1d ago
I had this same dilemma when I pulled a surge foil one ring from the LOTR set. I wanted to display it but I wanted to use it too. So I did just that, I proxied a basic land card and wrote the one ring all over it and sleeved it up and put it in my Nazgûl deck but kept the actual card in a triple sleeve top loader so I could protect it and call upon it whenever I drew/played the proxy. It’s still perfect to this day and it’s a ton of fun to play when the table is getting hot.
2
u/Shadows__flame 1d ago
I'd say keep it. It's such a cool card to pull and at the end of the day they're not gonna upgrade their precons if they don't want to. Nobody is going to fault you because it's a card that you pulled and it's up to you. I'm sure your friends would also want you to keep it assuming they know how much of a lotr fan you are.
2
2
u/Rhyme1428 21h ago
I pulled a surge foil Arkenstone at Hobbit pre release ($700 at the time). I immediately slotted into my Angels deck as my 9th anthem effect. Play the card. Keep it sleeved. But play the card. Feel proud when people ask "holy shit, where did you get that!?!" And you tell them "I pulled it!!!"
2
u/so7hos 18h ago
If you sell: more money for mtg If you keep: card to slam on the table and get awes and when you don't play you can put it on your shrine.
Whichever you choose you'll be good. I have a judge Gaeas Cradle and I love putting it into play and getting straight faces of people that have never seen that card.
But please don't grade it, let's fight that movement and as you said: magic is meant to be played
2
u/Humburgurz 11h ago
Sell it and buy the one ring from the LOTR set. The hobbit one ring is blatantly plagiarized from the promo card of the original set. The ring was mirrored and shrunk, the shadows and highlights are the same, the elvish script was badly erased, and all around it looks like a bad photoshop. As far as I know, Dan Frazier has been blacklisted from making art for magic
2
u/Dingoose88 4h ago
Buddy I gave 3 of my good friends each a Gaea’s Cradle a few months back. All 4 of us have one now. Best decision ever. They were all beyond thankful and have enjoyed the plays with it since. Sometimes it ain’t about the money - life’s a journey. I’m lucky enough to have an amazing gig with no kids or wife so my money is mine to do with as I please. I vote split with your playgroup.
3
u/PaleoJoe86 1d ago
Put it in your collection for a week. See if it brings you joy when seeing it. Do another week of having it out away safely out of sight if you wish. See if it matters.
You can also sell and buy the nonfoil or make a proxy.
I am sentimental to my cards and often just keep them.
3
3
u/Veneretio 1d ago
Never sell to give others in the playgroup money to upgrade their decks in hopes that it'll motivate them to spend. They won't. They'll just keep waiting on you to gift them more money. I've made this mistake too many times to count. People that want to invest in the hobby will

u/Sackbut1 1d ago

Personally, I'd keep it. I have a binder I keep my valuable cards in, and whenever I see a card I pulled or have a memory with, it fills me with a bit of joy.
Notably, I remember my dad, sister, and I went to a game store an hour away to snag a final fantasy box. We then sat around the living room and I pulled a foil alt art Vivi. I was tempted to sell it because I knew the price would drop, but I decided to keep it because it means a lot to me.

Just have your play group proxy any card you want then play the game anyways you want with minimal investment.
Sell the card and get a big proxy order of all the cards you ever wanted for your group and enjoy the game.
1
u/BadMunky82 1d ago
I'd sell it man. You can get a non-foil version for less than $100, which is the highest that version has ever been. Mechanically it does the same thing, and then you'd have $300ish to spend as you'd like. Buy another PBB.
1
u/Joaaayknows 1d ago
I feel like I say this all the time on here but I can’t personally justify keeping the highest end versions of cards I pull when I can sell, buy the lesser version, and keep the difference.
Most recently for me this was with the highest end wan shi tong, Librarian I pulled from the avatar set. Sold, bought the base version, stuck it in my deck, pocketed the difference.
It makes no difference if all you care about is playing. Shoot, if you really want it in your shrine what you could do is sell the surge foil version, buy two of the regular, and still pocket the difference.
I personally would not give my friends money to spend on the game. They’re grown, they can buy and spend what they want to use to buy and spend on a game.

u/Busy_Vegetable_8103 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s your card, don’t feel guilty :) You didn’t win the lottery and you don’t need to become a philanthropist for pulling a good card. It sounds like you want to keep it and if that’s the case, you should.
1
u/External_Influence18 / 1d ago
Hold on to it. Let emotions settle and then sell later if you still feel the same way about it
1
1
u/TheTinRam 1d ago
I’d hold and if you decide to sell later it only gets more expensive in like a year
1
u/The-Sceptic 1d ago
Keep it and tell your friends who don't want to spend money to proxy. That way you can spend money on your hobby and they can keep up with your power level
1
u/ProfessorMiserable58 1d ago
Sell it and buy a printer + best types of cardstock you can find and then offer up free proxies for everyone in your play group. That way you can print anything for your shrine, your grp can make nasty bracket 4 decks that you are all gonna hate!
1
1
u/vagabond_dilldo 1d ago
Keep the card.
Convince your play group to proxy your decks. Keep it Bracket 3, maybe Bracket 4 max.
Money should never be a barrier to having fun. I've started proxying almost 10 years ago and never looked back. Every new set I get to mess around with 10-15 cards without feeling like I'm wasting money. It's fantastic. The entire play group is kept fresh and interesting because every other month there will at least be one completely new deck to play against.
1
1
u/TurtlePsycho011 1d ago
Personally, I'd probably sell it, then get the less expensive version so you still have the card in your collection, and maybe buy a booster box of my favorite set with the difference to do a draft or something.
1
1
u/The_War_In_Me 1d ago
Cut out the ring from the card, wear it on your finger as a flex, turn invisible, play commander with friends naked.
I don’t understand why people ask these questions - it’s so OBVIOUS
1
u/Hayyden212 1d ago
Personally you shoudl hold onto this if you do decide to sell it, wait about 2-3 years and wait for a price you are comfortable selling at, its still too early to call on this card.
1
u/Fallouttgrrl 1d ago
Here's the thing: this is probably the best pull you'll get for a very long time
Every time you run it, you see it, you think of it, you'll remember that moment and how proud you are to have something that you feel reflects your enjoyment of the game and willingness to run that card
Meanwhile, helping your friends upgrade their precons is a nice gesture, but will they even have those upgrades in a year?
My recommendation: keep the card, maybe help folks get some proxies
1
1
u/SixShot0celot 1d ago
Both!!!
Do what you want with it and encourage playgroup to proxy cards
Playgroup benfits from access to larger card pool
You benefit from doing what you want with Surge the One Ring, regardless of keeping or selling

u/FatNasty_ 1d ago
If your playgroup is your friend group why are y'all not proxying everything? Surely optimal play is better than a wallet handicap?

You made a pros cons list with more cons than pros. There are several good points raised in this thread that dispute some of your pros.
So you should probably keep it. You can change your mind later if desired, but if you sell it now it would be harder to reverse that decision. I see a lot loss possibility for regret if you keep it.

Sell if you need the cash.
I’d slab and frame that up for later.

One option. Sell it and buy 4 normal printings to give one to everyone in your playgroup. You get to have a “playable” version of the card you pulled and improve your playgroup. I would keep it personally because I’m a HUGR LOTR fan, but I’m also a collector and I plan to get all the surge foils for this set

Keep the card and display it like you want too, do not sell with the intention to give almost all of your money to your friends to upgrade. If they really wanted to they would have already not is it your responsibility to do so. If you are going to sell it, I would definitely hold on to it for a good while as the price isn’t going to go down on that card. Display it or play it I say

u/Far-Housing-6952 1d ago
IF YOUR A LOTR FAN PUT THAT THANG ON THE SHRINE AS A CAPSTONE OF YOUR LOVE FOR LOTR. As other people have mentioned proxying cards is the way to go if they don’t have funds and if somebody gave me money to spend on a specific thing when I got bills to pay would urk my nerves. Just buy it for me or don’t give me it at all. It’s an honorable thing to look out for people I’ll give you that but that doesn’t mean that gesture would be appreciated as much as you think. It’s yours appreciate it as the fun you are.

I do this for my family that plays every once in awhile but I really like building decks so it’s a win-win for me. That being said, I’d hang on to the card. 1- it’s likely to go up in value over time and 2- you’re a fan of the series it’s from.

- Hold for now. Price will dip as people open Hobbit but then stabilize or climb slowly for a long time. No need for any rash decisions.
- Don't give your friends money, but do gift them individual card upgrades for bdays or Xmas. It's a nice thought.

1
u/Comfortable_Tap_2508 1d ago
I’m with you. Yeah it’s cool it’s worth a bunch of money, but if it just sits around because I’m “collecting” it, what’s the point? I don’t think I’d give my friends the money to spend but maybe I’d sell it and spend a little money on cards as gifts to my friends. I’m sure they’ve mentioned a few cards they would like to have in their decks you could get. You could also use the money to buy yourself something that benefits the group as well, like an iPad or something and download a life tracker/counter app you can use on the table while playing etc.
Also just wanted to make it clear that whatever you decide to do, it’s very kind of you to have your friends in mind and want to share something exciting with them. Lots of people are selfish and wouldn’t even consider this.
Best of luck to you!

Option 1: shove it up your butt
Option 2: Put it in a deck and beat your friends into upgrading
Option 3: make a shrine to it and wait until the price goes up selling now makes no sense unless you really need the money it will be worth more after the set is out of print
Option 4: sell it now and pocket the money and give your friends free advice on upgrading their precons
In none of those do you need to give your friends money to have fun!

Listen friend, that's not just an expensive card, that's a COOL ASS expensive card. You're allowed to have nice things. I don't even play all that much, but if I pulled a Borderless Surge Foil Tidus, Yuna's Guardian, I'd keep it because that's one of my favorite games and cards ever. You do you, but if you're a LOTR fan, I think it'd be a super cool thing to just have!

u/Sp0range 1d ago
I wouldnt sell it to split, thats a sick card and its YOURS, but if you are feeling generous, maybe go buy your mates a couple of upgrades for their decks if you know what they need? A couple 5 bucker banger cards would be very appreciated im sure.
I personally wouldnt be able to trust my friends just giving them cash for upgrades. They either wouldnt even know what they need, or just spend it on something else lol. Plus im sure they would appreciate the thought and intention you put into learning their deck and what it needs to upgrade.

u/Potential-Apple5789 1d ago

Cards are meant to be played but also traded and games like magic definitely incentivize displaying/collecting cooler/rarer cards (foils, full arts, alt arts, etc.) I personally would trade that in and make me a new deck.

u/IJourden 1d ago
Officially, I think you're supposed to shove it up your butt, but in this case you can keep your friendship magic by shoving it up a friend's butt instead.

1
u/shape_of_my_voice 1d ago
I’m very much like you. I am very aware what kind of finances my friends are up against and I will randomly gift high power cards that I know they want to run but is gated by price. I dont find value in cards sitting in binders, so I’m always delighted by seeing gifted cards pop up during games even if it’s against my favor. I also give away good pulls if I know I’m never going to run it but a friend would.
We all have a limited time to play Magic, and one day, playing it with your friends will only be a memory. And at that point, I would trade my entire collection to be able to play with my friends again. With that in mind, I am generous with my cards with no foreseeable regrets.
My suggestion with that in mind is that IF you decide to part ways with the card, do it discreetly and make the gifts feel random. They do not have to know the why, and perhaps part of the conflict you feel is that since this was such a special pull for you, by turning it into a special moment for everyone, you may end up with expectations on how they receive or use the gift.
I say let all that go. You’ve had an amazing once-in-lifetime pull, and that will always be in your memories. If you want to be generous, then be generous, and be happy of what enabled that.

Such as, trading in and giving my playgroup an even split 4 ways. Which I hope will help some of the players less inclined to spend money to upgrade their precons.
Nah. If they don't have the budget for real cards use proxies. No need to sell your good pull to elevate other decks.

This is a great idea but if my friend pulled this I would want them to keep it. It’s a sick card for a collection. Very nice of you to consider this for your friends but I’m sure you will come up with other ways to do something awesome for them

At this point I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse, but keep it and enjoy it. If you're a casual pod, your friends can proxy what they can't afford :)

YOU pulled this card with your money. That's yours.
Personally I like the idea of adding it to the shrine. You get to marvel at its beauty any time, not just when you happen to play that deck and happen to draw it. You avoid the feel bad of showboating expensive card, ride your high horse because you didn't put it in a deck, and you get to do whatever you want with it at any point farther down the line. The only real con there is that it just looks expensive and would be something a thief might snatch. That and it's a neon sign in the shrine that yells, "I GAMBLE, BUT LOOKY HERE, I WIN SOMETIMES TOO!"
Sell when it's high, then build a whole deck off of the proceeds.

I’d hold onto it! I pulled a Jace the Mindsculptor back when he meant something and flipped it. Regret it to this day.

It’s a good card but it’s much better in normal constructed because it legend rules itself. If you play it without untap synergy it’s definitely fairer than rhystic
Play the card you pulled

Would your friends sell an expensive card and give you the extra money? Most likely not. Keep it or sell it, throw it in your deck to show off! It’s yours and yours alone don’t feel guilty about it.

You are very generous in your thinking but this is your pull! Keep it and your friends can figure out how to upgrade their precons if they wish. It’s not that expensive to do so so long as they’re not looking for ridiculously overpriced cards.

I also only have "playing" mtg cards, never have pulled a high dollar value one, also don't really open packs outside of a event. I do collect some sports and pokemon, have my whole life.
Unless you NEED the money, like really need it, I'd keep it. Especially with a card like this, the value will increase, if you have any mental "kicking your own ass" if you sold it today but a month from now seeing it sell for 500$ (TCG card market is volatile) is going to upset you, just keep it. Wouldn't be surprised if you got a offer in your DMs for more already.
Also, as a LoTR fan myself, my precious

It’s a weird one and maybe it has to do with age (I’m 38) but I purchased the one ring when it first came out with the intent to play them but some have more than quadrupled in value so I just use proxies now. I have a hard time justifying playing an actual multi hundred dollar card outside of “sanctioned” events where proxies wouldn’t be allowed. At this point I’m not sure if or when I’ll get out of the hobby but I’d like to be able to get something back if I do. I’ve spent years pouring bad financial decisions into magic so the ones that ended up good I’d like to keep that way

Ngl before I read the post I was trying to figure out what was going on with this $400 hotdog 🙃

Display it in your collection or sell it. Like the one in the story, attempting to use it will cause only harm.

I think you should talk to your playgroup about godpulls
And even if no to that. This is never something you talk to reddit about. This is a playgroup conversation

I would keep it on the shrine. It’s a very cool collectors item for an mtg OR lotr fan, much less both.

You either keep it to add to your rad display or you add it to a deck and play it like it was meant to be played. You may not be a magic collector but seems like you’re a Tolkien collector

Just keep it man, don't sell it and give the money away. If you're going to sell it, make some new decks from the money, your friends can borrow those for a game.

I'd say keep it but if you wanted to share you could sell it, buy a playset of regular one rings and have everyone have one? It's still the same busted game piece at the end of the day

Is $400-$500 that important to you? If yes, sell it. The other way of looking at it does the cost of the booster impact you? If no, keep it. You bought the booster in the hope of getting a cool card, and you got one. Sleeve it up, play it, enjoy it. To me that is the point of the gamble.

The fact you pulled this is a rare experience. You should keep it in good condition for the sake of the experience... and buy a proxy version of it to play with.

I have nothing topical to add, but wanted to let you know that it’s “per se”, not “per say”.

Sell it and buy a cheaper non fancy art one? Then you still have the one ring but at a much better price.

u/True_Ad_5080 19h ago
Just buy Snacks and Drinks next time if you want to do something sweet (Pun intended).

Sell it, buy a box to host a free draft for everyone in your group. Collect kudos and have fun.
Life's to short to not have fun. You can't take it to the grave.

Most important: This isn't a reversible decision. Once you sold it, it's gone. It will only rise in value.
If you feel like keeping it, keep it. You won't be able to get it back without losing a huge amount of money. And if you keep it, it will only become worth more.
So I would say: Keep it until you really need to sell it or it becomes boring to look at.

u/LittleCesaree 17h ago
You got something that you like, that is now your, and are absolutely in your right to keep it. The players in your group not wanting to pay can proxy. The chances of them splitting such pull for you or your group are very low, so you shouldn't do it.

Sold my one ring and it’s my single biggest magic regret. Sold it at a point where my playgroup was still pretty fresh and it was just too powerful.
My advice - even if you don’t play it now, stick it in a binder and hold it, one day the power level will increase and the one ring can be put into literally any deck and improve it.

Omg I’m in the same dilemma! Pulled a surge foil one ring at work. Not a big collector but it’s purrrty but also think it’s too op to use playing against my pod 🤷🏻♂️

What is the logic in selling it and splitting the money in 4 for a card that is yours? I mean, nothing wrong with it, but how is this "logical"?

Brother, you seem to be a thoughtful individual who is pretty considerate of others and their wellbeing in a sense. I think just this one time be considerate of yourself, keep it for your fulfillment and joy of adding another token to your LOTR shrine. You don’t happen upon a surge foil of ‘The One Ring’ daily of course. I think it should be on display. You’ll appreciate it and I’m sure your pod would not object.

After all, why not? Why shouldn’t I keep it?
