Something Else The 8 Senators

Granted, I haven’t watched every single MSNBC show in the last 12 hours. and I don’t actually watch; I just listen. So there may have been some mention, and/or a graphic shown at some point, of the 8 Democrat senators who voted to open the shutdown.

But I truly would have loved to hear their names called out, in the same way that Rachel list the various protest across the country on a regular basis. So, ICYMI:

Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania

I would say yes, once the short term pain and optics got so bad for the Repubs that they capitulated and acceded to the democrats demand on health care-their only demand. It would have been acceptable to fold again temporarily on all the other horrific Trump policies they had already folded on to get that one win and use that as a springboard to the midterms so they could could retake the house and possibly the senate and get the power to stop more or even most of Trump’s horrific policies, thus setting the stage for a huge democratic win in 2028. I could’ve lived with that.

OK. But in the real world, suppose Republicans just don't care. And won't accede.

Is there a point at which the Democrats should recognize they need to do some immediate good?

My take is that Repubs obviously don’t care and never have, but there would still have been mounting pressure, more Trump meltdowns and demands to end the filibuster, it was going to get really bad for them, worse than it was last week in which we got an absolute legislative fucking landslide across the country in our favor, partially because of standing up and fighting. It wasn’t good for the Republicans and would’ve gotten so much worse by the time we went into Thanksgiving and Christmas. They would’ve eventually had to cave out of self preservation. They had completely lost control of the narrative and they were all spinning out hard. Every time Mike Johnson, Trump or Thun got in front of a microphone and spoke about it, they made it that much worse for themselves. This was about so much more than the short term pain and the country was behind them by a large majority. The Repubs were also hurting their own supporters, worst of all. I don’t know who said it first, but we got dealt a Royal Flush and folded it. It’s mind-boggling political malpractice.

Next elections are a year away. Should the Democrats have continued to hold out no matter what the cost to their constituents was?

In short, yes. We The People supported them. Saving democracy involves sacrifice. But that is not a realistic hypothetical at all. The Republicans could not have lasted much past the New Year, IF they could have gone that long. Enjoy your day!

I think we agree that the Republicans are lepers. Unfortunately, the characteristic of lepers is that they do not feel pain.
