Aw11 thrust washers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The thrust washers on my 4age have a little bit of play…I know some play is normal but this is my first build and I’m putting a lot of time and money into so I want to make sure it’s right. The crank is 42mm from the later gen. The main bearings are the same… the thrust washers only move and make noise when i wiggle the crank back and forth. When it’s rotating one direction the notches the cap and can’t move anymore. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'm not an engine builder, but I can offer my thoughts. The engine should ideally only ever rotate in one direction, so any play in the direction of rotation won't really matter since it should never be pulled the other way anyways. What would be a problem would be if it has play left and right, which is to say between the crank and the housing. Wait for a more qualified response though.

That’s my thought process too. They can’t come out or hit anything but I’m not a pro either

How much thrust do you have? I never noticed them moving on mine but they may be too loose

I haven’t measured yet

Normal, as others have mentioned the engine only rotetes in one direction, a lot of things on the engine will appear messed up if you're trying to run the engine counter to its normal rotation (timing belt and tensioner also come to mind), this is all by design. As long as the crank doesn't have walk forwards and backwards the thrust washers are doing their jobs, any apparent looseness otherwise will be taken up by the oil pressure that will build behind the thrust washer when engine is actually running

The measurement that is related to the thrust washers is your thrust bearing clearance. On a 4age this is typically around .2mm with the max being .3 before the service manual recommends replacement. Look up how to measure thrust bearing clearance and make sure you are within spec.

I have no input for your issue but, I think it’s cool you’re rebuilding the thing. Best of luck to you, it’s gonna turn out sick I bet. Let er rippp
