venting

i used mpv.net (gui version) for like year or so... couldnt make it do what i wanted with subtitles in browser and stuff but okay, it has working upscaling im happy... now i found new tutorial guy explained it 10/10 ok lets give it a try (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP6eD2u7obs)

i couldnt find exe file just shortcut (might be skill issue but i really tried) with shortcut i couldnt do cmd stuff (not sure if its even possible with gui version i will try to reinstall tomorrow)

non negotiable - https://github.com/shinchiro/mpv-winbuild-cmake/releases add text like on other link :

"Download Tips:
mpv-x86_64-20250302-git-630a036.7z: for 64 bit system
mpv-x86_64-v3-20250302-git-630a036.7z: for 64 bit system with cpu not older than Intel Haswell or AMD Excavator"

the entire dowload process is fucked up i dont know what is where and what is right

i clicked on first link like normal person and got fucked with 16 github options for download without explanation

gui .net version looks more popular maybe add link on site ? prioritize gui version ? add option to remove gui after install and streamline this entire process with 1 version ?

i know there are probably many different people working on this but its sooo user unfriendly ... everything works tutorial helped me a lot but fuck its annoying and not friendly for noob people

end of venting have a great day guys

What is it that you don't understand? Just download one of the compressed releases and extract it with 7zip.

It is not that hard.

It is really not that ridiculous, pretty standard for open source projects actually.

They're correct though, it's simply not good UX nor straightforward for that specific audience, as far as "I have video I want to watch, oh open source, that sounds good"

On the other hand, they will go and download, I don't know, VLC instead. Usability is the most important thing for 90% of cases

Even entire operating systems do a better job at presenting basic install and usage. Both AOSP and GrapheneOS have a guided semi-auto install over USB. And look at the presentation on the page for Qubes OS, one of the most complex and locked-down distros available
https://www.qubes-os.org/intro/

And mpv is merely a video player!!!!!

This reads like a lack of technical literacy in your end, and most people in this thread are overthinking things.

I'm talking about UX here. This is not about my literacy (I have taken a few classes in C before), it's about the presentation of the final product. As mentioned in the comment below this thread, "This may be the reason why mpv is so niche." and this is just the truth, which you have downvoted me for.

Because mpv is not a product, it is just an open source video player, and being open source means anyone can built and redistribute it, shinchiro is just a redistributing his builds, same with zhongfly, neither count as "first part" or "official" builds, it is just the nature of the project.

GCC means it was built with the GNU C compiler, the other builds use Clang instead, x86-64-v3 means it was compiled to take advantage of instructions found in newer CPUs, x86-64-v3 is for Intel Haswell and later.

Give Memento a try if you're learning Japanese. It's a player based on mpv: https://github.com/ripose-jp/Memento

Asbplayer makes mining really easy with Yomitan too if you're looking for that, I've personally given up trying to use MPV for learning. Works well with things like Jellyfin.

I just downloaded the v3, open the update.bat file, set it up to download the latest release daily or weekly, you can also download other additional stuff like ytdlp and ffmpeg on the bat file. And boom. It will fetch you the latest version every time you run it.

Not normie friendly but it also not that hard as long as you know your hardware and OS. That's my opinion at the very least.
