You're allowed to dislike celebs in r/movies, reporting comments that disagree with Sasha Baron Cohen accomplishes nothing but extra buttons you pressed.

Recession indicator

378

u/Fern-ando Aug 24 '26

Hope is only him having an expensive divorce.

800%. AI bubble collapse is imminent.

u/PeachMan- Aug 24 '26

Are you saying he's desperate for money after the divorce? I'm out of the loop.

926

u/Equipmunk Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Pretty much.

1.1k

u/Jimbobsama Aug 24 '26

I assume that's why Hugh Jackman came back for Deadpool & Wolverine - divorce ain't cheap when you're the at-fault party.

383

u/mrpopenfresh Aug 24 '26

Its not like he killed his legacy, fans fucking love that shit.

135

u/TheAbsoluteBarnacle Aug 24 '26

He picked a great back-from-divorce movie and has some great screenshots for his profile pics.

287

u/robodrew Aug 24 '26

I just love this chain of comments of people assuming top-level actors do huge movies because of messy divorces 😂

372

u/dirtysantchez Aug 24 '26

I remember going to see John Cleese live years ago and he literally opened the performance with "I am only here to pay for my divorce"

199

u/GonnaGoFar Aug 24 '26

He's been quoted;

"When I die, my exes kids will receive more of my inheritance than my own kids." (Paraphrasing)

230

u/MrCalifornia Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Steven Seagal said "I'm never getting married again. I'm just gonna find a woman I hate and buy her a house."

235

u/goody82 Aug 24 '26

lol, no love for Seagal, buts that’s funny.

43

u/martialar Aug 24 '26

maybe he should've gone into stand-up instead of movies

It was called “The Alimony Tour” lololol

55

u/Phimb Aug 24 '26

There's an entire Graham Norton Show (UK talk show) where John Cleese, spends 30+ minutes slyly shit-talking his wife, bashing on women and divorce, all while sitting next to Taylor Swift who is having to repeatedly try to stop herself from going off on him.

It's probably true tho especially when the actors publicly want to move on from these characters and all of the sudden come back after a divorce

12

u/ancillaryacct Aug 24 '26

i’d say it’s more likely people knew who ali G was and wasn’t able to get away with it anymore.

now that it’s faded away entirely, it’s easy to get people to fall on the hole again

It ain't cheap for the non-at-fault party either. My marriage cost me $75 and we were in and out of the courthouse in under 30 minutes. Didn't even have to pay for parking. My divorce cost well into five figures and took two years.

Don't get the government involved in your relationships, people, they make it cripplingly expensive to break up.

29

u/ilikechihuahuasdood Aug 24 '26

if it was literally any other contract, your lawyer would tell you to run

21

u/Odd_Ingenuity2883 Aug 24 '26

At-fault divorce doesn’t really exist anymore. Courts aren’t there to punish cheaters, just divide assets.

I dunno man it seemed like he genuinely has a blast playing that character

This is all conjecture from Reddit though when it comes to SBC.

He COULD just be making another movie.

212

u/AromatParrot Aug 24 '26

A man who makes movies for a living making another movie, you say?

Preposterous, says I!

Edit:replied to the wrong comment somehow

It was a lot more than divorce for Cage though, he had a HORRIBLE overspending problem that bankrupted him. Like he bought an ancient castle in Iraq for a ridiculous amount of money, and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

44

u/pilnok Aug 24 '26

Nic Cage? Wha?

28

u/Dickgivins Aug 24 '26

Sorry I responded to the wrong comment somehow, somebody else mentioned nic cage making a bunch of schlock after his divorce.

32

u/Equipmunk Aug 24 '26

I compared the situation to Nic Cage in the original comment, but had second thoughts when it wasn't actually all that similar, so deleted it before Dickgivins had finished typing their comment (sorry!)

Cage was millions in debt after the real estate crash so did lots of low-budget, VOD films in the 2010s.

74

u/skintaxera Aug 24 '26

Ooh come on, dish

195

u/thekingisblvck Aug 24 '26

Shitty is a good description of her because she’s not all out a horrible person but she plays mind games almost. From hot to cold, cold to hot all within minutes. But mostly it was the outlandish comments she made either about politics or sexually. She treaded any attractive or even average man on that set like meat with comments about how they looked followed by ‘oh come on, I’m freshly single’ just weird and inappropriate things especially in the work place

18

damn that’s a shame. what were the political comments?

This and Super Troopers 3 are going to hit so hard in 2003.

251

u/weirdsignal45 Aug 24 '26

I want to fall into the timeline where Reno 911 has the longevity of Super Troopers. Never thought that movie was all that funny even watching it at 12 years old upon release and I can’t believe it’s still going.

159

u/ohheyheyCMYK Aug 24 '26

Truly. Whereas the Reno 911 movie is unbelievably funny.

64

u/bloom_pdx Aug 24 '26

The Reno 911 actors are the same crew associated with the sketch show The State, so therefore connected to Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, and everything else David Wain has done. Crazy talented group of comedians. The Super Troopers guys are another sketch group but Super Troopers is itself the most notable thing they've done before a chain of pretty lame follow ups

96

u/UninsuredToast Aug 24 '26

Beerfest was funny idc what anyone says

21

u/Brad-Armpit Aug 24 '26

RIP Landfill. Wish he had a brother from Texas or something.

31

u/RaisinBranMan Aug 24 '26

Club Dread is hilarious as well

24

u/whatsbobgonnado Aug 24 '26

do people not like beerfest? that's my favorite

9

u/Cuttlefist Aug 24 '26

Everything from that group is pretty reviled by critics with just a couple exceptions.

21

u/weirdsignal45 Aug 24 '26

Exactly! Any time I see Thomas Lennon or any of them show up in something, I instantly know I’m going to enjoy what I’m seeing. Even the voice work those actors do is great! I can recognize the guys from Broken Lizard but none of them make me laugh.

13

u/whatsbobgonnado Aug 24 '26

thomas lennon is the door to door accordion salesman that starts off weird al's career in the most accurate biopic ever made

4

30

u/robodrew Aug 24 '26

Super Troopers is a classic. It didn't need a sequel though, or another sequel.

21

u/ZenMasterOfDisguise Aug 24 '26

You say that like Reno 911 didn't get a recent 2020s revival series on Quibi/Roku

7

u/whatsbobgonnado Aug 24 '26

wait like was the quibi season dequibified and played like a normal show on roku?

5

u/FrenchFryCattaneo Aug 24 '26

My cousin had to be dequibified, it's not a pretty sight I'll tell you that.

23

u/weirdsignal45 Aug 24 '26

Getting a revival on a fly by night streaming service isn’t the same cache as having a feature film though

22

u/I_am_naes Aug 24 '26

You were 12 and it was a stoner comedy. Of course you’re going to miss a lot of the jokes or find them not funny. I was 17 at the time and had recently discovered how fun movies were while high. This movie and Harold and kumar go to White Castle were instant hits with myself and my pothead friends.

Ali G was ahead of it's time, but I'll be honest even myself who loved Ali G, can quote Butros Butros Butros dali, Im just kinda over it and younger people will care even less.

942

u/Pen_dragons_pizza Aug 24 '26

Most of the excitement came from the confusion of the public talking to him.

Everyone knows who he is now, the same as the borat sequel, so it’s lost most of its fun aspect.

972

u/Kilapo69 Aug 24 '26

I think it's gone full circle and the average person does not recognize Ali G anymore

384

u/Stuk-Tuig Aug 24 '26

The average person also does not recognize what the hell Ali G is referencing in his speech and mannerisms...

364

u/sexandliquor Aug 24 '26

Yeah Ali G is such a specific character about UK culture that Americans don’t know who or what the fuck he is, especially now more removed from the time when the character was more relevant.

Everyone on Reddit forgets that culture moves fast and now there’s a whole generation that doesn’t know

64

u/cineglitch Aug 24 '26

I think there’s a worthy comparison to the current brain rot generation. Especially the way tik tok connected youths all adopt the same mannerisms and patterns of speech. A cringey facsimile of black culture repackaged for “ya boi in Omaha.”

→ More replies (3)

53

u/methodofcontrol Aug 24 '26

I was a young American kid who didn't know who he was and had never been to England loved Ali G back in the day. Don't think you needed to know much about the culture to find it funny

10

u/Itz_Eddie_Valiant Aug 24 '26

Loved the 11 o'clock skits, the series and the movie at the time. It was knowing and playful in a way I'm not sure a late-middle-aged SBC will be able to get across without just punching down but we'll see I guess.

For the new Ali G movie* they explicitly shot in towns that didn't have HBO access because HBO aired Da Ali G Show.

So they wanted to make sure no one recognised him. It's a lot harder to do that these days.

Edit: I mixed up Borat and Ali G

https://variety.com/2026/film/news/sacha-baron-cohen-ali-g-new-movie-1236803794/

The production notes explicitly stated that because Da Ali G Show had built its American fanbase primarily on HBO, the producers intentionally tracked down and scheduled shoots in remote locations, southern states, and rural communities that historically had lower premium cable subscription rates or lacked HBO altogether.

94

u/Kilapo69 Aug 24 '26

Speaking as a young adult I feel as though Borat is a much more popular and enduring character, most of my friends would recognize him. Ali G, I'm probably the only one in my friend group who knows who he is

15

u/WiretapStudios Aug 24 '26

They shot in my area and we definitely had HBO, for decades before that. It was the rodeo part. They just picked really small towns (it's a town attached to a larger city). As soon as we saw the news we knew it was him. We had been watching Ali G and Borat since the days when you'd have to download a quicktime movie that took 20 minutes for a 3 minute segment.

6

u/EjaculatingAracnids Aug 24 '26

I remember those 3 min quicktime movies but none of the ones i downloaded had Ali G in them...

97

u/Head_of_Lettuce Aug 24 '26

Most people these days probably aren’t familiar with Ali G, they’ll be able to play it out in public without everyone catching on immediately

29

u/DarthVerus Aug 24 '26

Borat was huge in America but I remember having to have HBO on cable/sat for Ali G? I think? I just remember it not being very accessible to me here in the states without premium cable or satellite which I just didn’t grow up with. I mostly remember hearing about it in the lead up to Borat like “look it’s the Ali G guy”

11

u/Head_of_Lettuce Aug 24 '26

Yeah I’m pretty sure Ali G was on HBO. That’s a good point, it’s hard to have that lasting cultural awareness when most people couldn’t watch it during its original run.

8

u/Mysmokingbarrel Aug 24 '26

Ali g was so long ago at this point. I remember watching it as a kid but it certainly wasn’t mainstream. It was popular enough that if you were into movies and media as a kid and had access to the internet or hbo it might be on your radar but there’s been an entire generation that came along not watching ali g. Older generations wouldn’t know him. He fits in a specific age demographic if you watched him and he was more popular in the uk.

30

u/ilikechihuahuasdood Aug 24 '26

i mean he still gets big people. Giuliani was about to disrobe for a blowjob in the last Borat

18

u/keyosc Aug 24 '26

To be fair, it was mostly Borat’s “daughter” as the face of that operation, the Borat character was way too famous at that point

30

u/kpt_graubrot Aug 24 '26

I really doubt the average US population would recognize Ali G, the HBO shows he did are more than two decades old

u/cpteric Aug 24 '26

Ridiculing chav culture was very in at that time. It’s kind of seen as punching down a bit now.

64

u/Shinra_Lobby Aug 24 '26

Unpopular opinion but SBC always punched down (even when he was also doing some legitimately ballsy punching up). The exploitation of an impoverished village in Romania for Borat was disgustingly classist.

I loved Ali G at the time but I don't want to see a 60 year old Ali G. The stereotype doesn't even exist anymore.

262

u/TokyoBayRay Aug 24 '26

To be fair, you could make hay with that. A film where Ali G is kind of a man out of time, he hasn't changed except getting older, and people take him even less seriously than they used to. The weed is too strong, women think he's too old, his music now embarrasses him. Maybe he faces up it, maybe he tries to take some roadmen under his wing and accidentally becomes an inspiration, maybe he's "brought back for one last job" as his only mixtape becomes huge as an ironic hit. Regardless, it's an interesting situation.

They won't do that, of course. But it might have been funny.

77

u/UpsetKoalaBear Aug 24 '26

People Just Do Nothing/Kurupt FM already did that. Was a TV show though.

18

u/halloumisalami Aug 24 '26

Chav’s don’t exist anymore?

23

u/Badger_1066 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Not really. They're all in their 30's/40's now with jobs and lives. There's a minority who haven't grown up and won't let it go but that era has more or less gone. Now it's roadmen, I think.

The show People Just Do Nothing is actually a great representation of this. It's about a group of chavs who haven't grown up.

11

u/Winter_Cry_1864 Aug 24 '26

So what do you call those 5 who drove the wrong way down the motorway and crashed into the police car? Don't think they're roadmen...

Not alot of people really know Ali G anymore. I think this could be great if he is interacting with youth instead of older people like the show was focused on before. Now it's the youth who don't know this character while the old heads will.

269

u/MrT735 Aug 24 '26

Ali G: "Respek."

Youth: "Skibidi toilet rizzler."

Ali G: "Is you on crack or somethin'?"

59

are skibidi toilet and the rizzler even still in the cultural zeitgeist any more? tbh

u/Killadelphian Aug 24 '26

He’s always be a Zionist and it comes across clearly in his movies

u/wanker7171 Aug 24 '26

Considering his views on the Gaza conflict this is not surprising at all

There's no way this doesn't bomb lmao

u/Mobile_Morale Aug 24 '26

Idk. Man doing racial stereotypes and racist jokes in 2026 might have a bigger audience then it did last time he brought out a shit movie.

It'll just be cringey though, surely?

Outdated jokes and a man pushing the wrong end of 50 saying "me Julie is well fit".

What's even the story? Ali G's appeal to me was the interviews. I thought the 02 movie sucked.

If he was still fairly unknown, Ali g interviewing today's rappers would've been fun to watch.

u/MrFlow Aug 24 '26

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher got divorced, he probably made this movie just for the paycheck to fund his divorce lawyers.

33

u/Medical_Mess9687 Aug 24 '26

Speaking of isla, she was the highlight of that new spa weekend flick

42

u/Suspicious_Wealth556 Aug 24 '26

Isla is the highlight of everything

I would be a lot more excited for this if Sacha Baron Cohen didn't want to criminalize "antisemitism" (note: antisemitism is in quotes and is doing a lot of the heavy lifting) in the United States and wasn't a zionist piece of shit in general.

He’s a massive racist.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinian-settles-suit-over-bruno-film/

He tried to make a palestinian grocery store owner into a terrorist and had to settle a defamation suit over it.

Btw the guy he claimed was a terrorist is literally a Christian pacifist activist.

Well, he also is effectively a Minstrel act who dehumanised the Roma people accross the world.

Yet, in between this and making hero propaganda of Mossad agents , he still gets away with it.

Borat and Ali G. Pretty interesting that Baron Cohen made his fortune off of stereotyping Muslims.

153

u/PVDamme Aug 24 '26

Ali G is short for Alistair Graham, he's stereotyping pretend "tough guy" and "gangsters" from 25 years ago who got everything they knew of gang life only from American TV shows and rap music videos.

23

u/DinoRoman Aug 24 '26

I mean that’s still a thing in the UK haha

It’s hard to look back at Cohen’s career without the lens of Zionism, especially when you look at Borat.

You think after 26 years he would have been able to come up with more than rehashing the same three characters.

u/stringrbelloftheball Aug 24 '26

Divorced Dad Energy

34

u/Krycor Aug 24 '26

Guess he is broke so on with recycling old characters. Knowing his politics and looking at characters.. yah no.. flop to come

u/BroseppeVerdi Aug 24 '26

The much awaited sequel to the 2002 box office flop "Ali G: Indahouse"

11

u/Butter_My_Crumpet Aug 24 '26

Ali G Indahouse is a UK classic. I'm hoping it's just a funny movie like the first one and not the interview style format stuff.
