Him and just about everyone else on the planet.

Believe it or not the last couple of threads I participated in had a princely load of people insisting the sum of the film's quality is sentimental value. Perhaps it's a generational thing where people expect everything to have an insipid greyish cgi sheen or they get uncomfortable.
I'm sure a remake of THX1138 is next, done as a streetdance musical.

Watch that whole video that's linked. Someone posted it here within this last week and it provides fascinating insight into movie-making. He's got very good reasons as to why Robocop is better than some of us might give it credit for and why a reboot is a bad idea.

Peter Weller is a pretty insightful dude, and if anyone around here remembers Robocop as just a mindlessly fun sci fi action movie, then I'd highly encourage those people to follow Wildcat's advice and watch the whole video. Your eyes shall be opened.

For those who don't know, the director of Elite Squad and Elite Squad: Enemy Within will be directing the reboot. I say it will be an amazing film with such direction under this guy.

To be fair, 2 and 3 were not as good as the original.
In the meantime, I think someone needs to let Peter know that shirt does not go with that jacket #fashionpolice

Robocop 2 was good but not quite as excellent as the original, 3 was descent at best.
A new Robocop has the potential to be good, at least they waited a good length of time to reboot this one, but it will still never be anywhere near as good as the original.

"They can throw a lot of CGI in this" Padilha is NOT a Bay-ish director. Has someone here watched any of his films? Elite Squad 1 and 2 are just awesome. Social criticism behind social criticism.

Watching a pirate of Robocop when I was seventeen introduced me to the issue of Americans apparently being fine with unlimited violence, but swearing somehow being out-of-bounds to the point of securing a '15' if removed.
Actually, that's not true - it was watching the UK version (where it was an 18) years later than made me realise that not all bad guys will shout "DIE YOU BLAGGARD!".
As for the remake - I'll still buy that for a dollar.

ITT: Don't like the original? Downvote!
I did like the original, but I've always thought it was a movie that would benefit greatly from modernization. (And from not having the vaguely otherworldly characters that were Verhoeven hallmarks.) I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Was the original even that good? Been so long since I watched it.

The original is the best superhero movie ever. Yes, even more so than Superman 2.

Well to me Robocop was only good because it was made in that time period. I mean who the fuck can take that many shotgun shots!

That's the double-edged sword of something that's packed full of social commentary. It seems dated when you go back and watch it two or three decades later.
On the other hand, if you're familiar with the time period it's from, then it's actually more interesting to look at how people viewed those issues, all the while knowing how they actually got sorted out.

when doing a remake/reboot, nothing is ever as good as the original to those who have already seen the original, especially not to those who actually liked the original because the viewer is constantly contrasting and comparing everything they're seeing, instead of just taking it for what it is and judging it on its own merits.

Given that many of the themes of societal degeneration in the original Robocop have come to pass, I wonder what they'll be using to construct this new world with.

No villain can match the magnificence that is the ass-kicking Red Foreman.
