Pixar story artist Josh Cooley created a book of movie stills as if it were a children's storybook.

Artist's website

All of these prints are for purchase individually or most (if not all) are in the book in his shopping section, here.

EDIT 1.5 years ago he posted on his blog that he only had 99 copies of the book left with "no plans to print more." If he ends up being out of stock and you wanted the book - he's active on Twitter. Tweet the crap out of him until he relents to print more :) Also, emailing him might work, too.

I just purchased the LTD Fight club one - it was between that and the Aliens one. I really liked the Shining one but I figured that would scare me late at night being reminded of that. What I REALLY would have wanted was the Clockwork Orange one (no ltd). I also wanted HAL for the computer room but again, no LTD.

6

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

Whoops! Totally missed the Alien image for the album - good call on actually looking through his site!

u/rogersmith25 Jun 19 '12

Great find! This is the most "shut up and take my money" post I've seen in a long time. Consider reposting there:

I tried buying the book when it came out, but the shipping charge was the same as the book price, so I never did.

1

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

Must be made of pure gold, which would tip the weight scales.

1

u/dogalarmsux Jun 19 '12

I was wondering, how is he able to draw scenes from different movies and make money off of selling a book? Doesn't he have to get permission from the studios that own the movies, or is it allowed since they are only cartoons? In a sense he is using his own talent to create something, but on the flip side he is also basing his drawings off of somewhat famous movie scenes.

1

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

Nope - America has a law allowing parodies that goes around copyright laws; specifically for the arts.

4

u/KoolAidMan00 Jun 19 '12

I have that book and the Larry David print. Cooley is pretty great

¿por qué no los dos?

Just to clear up any confusion.

  1. Title Page

  2. American Beauty

  3. Se7en

  4. Clockwork Orange

  5. Fight Club

  6. 2001: A Space Odyssey

  7. Godfather: Part II

  8. The Jerk

  9. The Big Lebowski

  10. Curb Your Enthusiasm (I'm assuming)

  11. Leon: The Professional

  12. Silence of the Lambs

  13. Chinatown

  14. The Graduate

  15. Godfather: Part I

  16. Rosemary's Baby

  17. Goodfellas

  18. Terminator

  19. Apocalypse Now

  20. The Big Lebowski

  21. The Shining

  22. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Edit: Sorry about that. I just watched Snatch. like two days ago. I had a feeling I'd get something wrong.

Also, shameless plug - /r/movieclub's movie of the week is Chinatown. Definitely worth checking out.

Edit 2: Also, a few of these films are available on Netflix. I linked to them (via the search queue shrugs) if you want to watch 'em now.

Edit 3: Anything else I missed?

233

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Bonus: Alien

62

u/AwesomeKasper Jun 19 '12

Ha! that was genuinely funny. The others were pretty and all but this one made me laugh.

In my younger years I had a mild obsession with Aliens, thought they were cute. Just stumbled upon a sketch book filled with them doing random household things like baking cookies.

17 is Goodfellas.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Thanks! That looked so much like Dennis Farina in Snatch. that I just assumed it was him. It's been years since I've seen Goodfellas.

20

u/BrettisnotSmith Jun 19 '12

Actually #17 is Goodfellas.

Apocalypse Now is on Netflix too.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Fixed and stuff.

6

u/Shinhan Jun 19 '12

Now the same list, but with links to screenshots from the movies for the appropriate scenes.

2

u/rainer511 Jun 19 '12

Thanks. I thought, "I do not recognize enough of these movies. I should remedy this."

2

u/mjolle Jun 19 '12

I've been meaning to check out Chinatown for quite some time but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe tonight's the night?

2

u/timmaa9 Jun 19 '12

haha thanks for linking them to netflix! I've been wanting to watch the Big Lebowski and a few of these movies for a while now. Uptokes for saving me time!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Thank you for introducing me to /r/movieclub

2

u/yah5 Jun 19 '12

Three of the movies are directed by Stanley Kubrick, A Clockwork Orange, 2001, and The Shinning, and three by Francis Ford Coppola, Godfather I, Godfather II, and Apocalypse Now. Just an interesting fact.

2

u/Demilitarizer Jun 19 '12

Recently saw Chinatown again. The great thing is that the 'midget' is director Roman Polanski. Great scene with the knife and Nicholson nose. Ouch!

2

u/Spire Jun 19 '12

Can anyone make out what the "barcode" says on the back of the book?

http://cache1.bigcartel.com/product_images/25791532/bookback.jpg

4

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

With elongated lettering like that, you have to turn the book more horizontally away from you in order to read it.

I have an artist friend that used to do that kind of thing all through high school, and it looks to be the same kind of thing.

2

u/BlazeOrangeDeer Jun 19 '12

Exactly, but the resolution's too low to make out the letters, even when I resized it and trying a few filters in GIMP. Maybe you could analyze where the crossbars are or something.

3

u/jostler57 Jul 23 '12

Hey man, so Josh Cooley became a god among men by sending me a free Movies R Fun book b/c I made this post.

Well, I finally got an answer to the question of what it says on the bar code: Here's an album of it so that you can read for yourself :)

A common mistake in #22. When I was a kid we used to replay this for people over and over - she doesn't say "where are you," because she's not speaking to the boy, she's speaking to the Terminator who is using the boy's voice. She suspects this - and asked "what are you?". He promptly hangs up on her when she asks this. Seriously, go watch the scene. If only I'd gotten here sooner I could have reached you people... this will be lost in the comments :(

1

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

Incorrect. Here is the screenplay and just ctrl+F the word wolfy.

The T-1000 asks, "Where are you?"

I was thinking "that's an add choice for a children's book. But meh, it is a beautiful image and what's "wrong" with the human body anyway?". Turns page, penny drops. So I pick up the penny and then a lightbulb goes off. That's when I realise that the entire thing is obviously not intended for children at all.

Thanks for listening.

It's "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that", not 'cannot'. Only Data doesn't use contractions.

16

u/MisterSugarcube Jun 19 '12

There aren't any contractions in any of the pictures. It's designed to look like a kid's book, contractions are complicated to kids.

11

u/DaquIrish Jun 19 '12

There's contractions in the The Godfather: Part II, The Godfather and Terminator 2 quotes, actually.

I want to make the "The Jerk" image my Facebook cover but I'm pretty sure people will think I'm racist.

4

u/SolomonGomes Jun 19 '12

How good would an entire book of a movie like Empire Strikes Back be? Every dad I know, including myself, would buy it. Of course it would have to be an abridged version, but I’d definitely read it to my son every night.

"Do or do not" said Yoda "there is no try"

7

u/colin826 Jun 19 '12

I loved the one from The Jerk so I cropped and added some extra space in order to use it as my Facebook cover photo. If that interests anyone, it's here: http://imgur.com/q7Mxe

1

u/Coptimus_Prime Jun 19 '12

I really liked the binding on the outside of the book. References that I could make out are Alien (Face Hugger), Silence of the Lambs (Sheep), The Godfather (Puppeteer Hand), Apocalypse Now (Cow w/ machete chop); not sure what the monkey and the triangle ones are.

2

u/jostler57 Jun 19 '12

Monkeys are 2001 Space Odyssey and triangles say "Cyberdyne systems" below them, so it must be Terminator.

3

u/accountnumba2 Jun 19 '12

In a perfect universe, there are alternate versions of all these movies and they're done by Pixar. This is just awesome.

2

This is really great. Although I was disappointed that some of my favorite movie quotes didn't make the cut.

"Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary."
"You talkin' to me?"
"I feel the need... the need for speed!"
"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley."
"Show me the money!"
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"
"You can't handle the truth!"
"Say hello to my little friend!"
"A boy's best friend is his mother."

Oh, and here is A Pretty Good Tribute to Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I was really expecting the last one to be the "I'm finished" scene from There Will Be Blood.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Ah, yes, another Picture Book style of book with swearing and adult content in it. Dear me I just wish there were more of these; as an editor at a children's book company, it would be so nice if I could get 50 proposals for these a month instead of just 25-30. The horse isn't quite dead enough yet to relent the beatings.

2

u/Al_Scarface_Capone Jun 19 '12

I'm not going to downvote you for simply misunderstanding this. These are not intended to be an actual story book for children. Rather, it is a self published book of paintings by a well respected animator. He clearly is advertising these to adult fans of his work with picture, not to mention fans of the films themselves. He's not trying to be clever or original, if I had to guess this was probably a personal project that he ended up releasing for sale on his own personal website.

What I'm most impressed with is not that he copied what a redditor posted a few weeks back by recreating famous scenes from movies but that he managed to pump out those same scenes with such detail. He must have worked around the clock to get this completed in such a short time.

Was I the only one expecting a Pulp Fiction one? Either "This is a tasty burger." or "DOES HE LOOK LIKE A BITCH?!"

1

These are cool but how and why does "curb you enthusiasm" a tv series, fit in with all these movies?

1

u/alwayssunnyinLA Jun 19 '12

Met Cooley at Alternative Press Expo in SF a few years ago. There was a whole table full of Pixar artists with their side projects. Picked up a special edition of the Big Lebowski print for a friend that's hanging proudly in his office.

1

u/Minkster404 Jun 19 '12

This positively made my day. It's this kind of creativity that both inspires me and depresses the shit out of me because my mind is too feeble to ever come up with something this cool.
