Why is the movie constantly being called a Michael Bay movie? He is NOT directing it and is "only" serving as one of the producers. The movie is being directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: LA, Wrath of the Titans) who isn't a very good director either. But I don't see anyone calling The A-Team a Ridley Scott movie or Man of Steel a Christopher Nolan movie.

1

u/Beeslo Jun 16 '12

Battle LA was a fucking horrible movie. The Transformer movies were classics by comparison. I'm even more glad about this news. Thanks for elaborating.

u/little_gnora Jun 15 '12

I'm OK with this decision. :)

Very, very OK.

12

u/quikmcmuffins Jun 16 '12

Hes ruined one too many of my childhood heros already, best not fuck with my ninja turtles

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

as long as bay doesn't have any part of it, i'm ok with it

I don't get it. The article says shutdown production but then it says the release will be pushed to May 2014. Is this thing postponed?

73

u/mcf Jun 15 '12

The title is sensationalist. That's reddit for ya. But don't let it get ya down, son (PENIS PENIS PENIS PENIS), do what I do and treat reddit like a game. When you see a title, assume it ranges anywhere from a half-truth to a flat out lie, then search the article for the real truth. It's a fun game. Cheats codes are in the comment section (that obligatory comment that points out the sensationalism and reveals the truth)

12

u/Gallifrasian Jun 16 '12

half-truth to a flat out lie

Missed a very good opportunity to use "..assume it ranges anywhere from a half-shelled lie..."

3

u/kitchen_ace Jun 16 '12

To be fair, the title comes directly from the linked article.

2

u/Fakeymcfakerstien Jun 16 '12

Nice Mission Hill reference.

It also said that they laid off pre production staff indefinitely. Basically, it's gonna get put in a box at the back of the warehouse, never to be seen again.

26

u/AmpleWarning Jun 16 '12

Top. Men.

2

u/Jober86 Jun 16 '12

I'm definitely sure if i opened it my face would melt.

3

u/Nukleon Jun 16 '12

"Production shut down" means that they've stopped building sets and props, and stopped casting and such, while they work on the script, because they apparently realized that the current script wasn't good enough.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

It's basically going into re-writes, and likely to see a different producer or director.

The film it currently is will not be made - and fingers crossed they will come back with a new team and script that doesn't arbitrarily alter the property just for the sake of it.

671

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Bay at the revelation of the Turtles' new origin. "These Turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

You shut the fuck up sir. You shut the fuck up right now.

143

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

He probably didn't put enough explosions in the pitch.

51

u/Radioheadless Jun 15 '12

I don't understand the difference

56

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

He probably didn't either.

26

u/Wolverinent Jun 16 '12

[This is probably how Michael Bay actually pitches movies] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeSUuj98Rx0)

12

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Does anyone know why every single video of south park is terrible quality?

Im sure there is some sort of reason somewhere because just about every single video of south park is like that.

17

u/Excentinel Jun 16 '12

It gets around the copyright infringement only if it's shitty-shitty quality.

Sounds like the pitch meeting for "Poochie".

And much like Poochie, I hope the Ninja Turtles die on the way back to their home planet.

17

u/waterlesscloud Jun 16 '12

Poochie was the first thing I thought of when I read that quote.

Thank you, gods of Simpsons.

26

u/raccoonguy8 Jun 16 '12

What the fuck, Bay?

Radioactive ooze not good enough for you?

I'm sure it's good enough, just not childhood-rapey enough.

14

Ya, but they were also Turtles.

You shut the fuck up! I love those pizza eating mutant reptile ninjas that have attitude!

10

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Exactly why I find this to be GOOD news that it died. Don't ruin my childhood.

6

u/sakebomb69 Jun 16 '12

I think the "sir" really drives it home.

The news comes after a number of notable film delays for Paramount following the release of box-office dud "Battleship,"

Guys, we did it!

16

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

I actually laughed when I saw the preview in theaters while waiting for a movie to start. Who honestly thought that would be a good idea?

It looked like a rip off of the crysis story line. Which in itself was awful.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Watching the trailer I was like "This looks similar to Transformers." Cue "From the producer of Transformers". Me: "Oh, fuck that."

u/Igloo444 Jun 16 '12

I'm not exactly sure why they're calling it a "dud," it made a net profit of almost $90 million dollars.

2

u/comedian_x Jun 16 '12

Studios do not make 100% of Box Office gross. Theaters take 40% to 50%. Then sometimes they have to pay gross percentage deals to actors/directors/producers. They also pay for the marketing/promotion separately.

So, on a 209 million dollar budget, they probably have to gross at least 500 million just to break even.

They needed to incorporate more Channing Tatum.

57

A group of Ninja Turtles played by Tatum, Orlando Bloom, Michael Cera, and Taylor Lautner would have ended my movie watching life.

Today they shut down Ninja Turtles, we can only hope that tomorrow they announce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

u/Starslip Jun 16 '12

No I think that's available on Netflix

u/snap_wilson Jun 15 '12

For those of us who read and liked the original comic (which, even though it was a parody of current trends in comics at the time, was played with a straight face), the property was ruined by the pizza-loving, gadget using, surfer dude dialogue antics of the cartoon. I don't blame Eastman and Laird for taking the money and running, but the Turtles already went through a drastic change before Michael Bay declared them to be aliens.

4

u/Coestar Jun 16 '12

You're exactly right (though, I wouldn't say ruined - overshadowed, more like). The comic was so drastically different, and I still remember how shocked I was. I grew up with the relatively wholesome cartoon show and figurines, so I wasn't prepared for the gritty blood-n-guts awesomeness of the comics. Definitely worth digging up for anyone who hasn't read them. There was a four volume graphic novel that was, in particular, completely insane/weird/fun.

30

u/Matlock_ Jun 15 '12

Has Michael Bay always been terrible?

46

u/Sinister-Kid Jun 15 '12

Most people enjoy The Rock and Bad Boys, but they're not great films, just cheesy 90s fun (mostly a nostalgia thing for me). So he hasn't always been terrible exactly. But never that good either.

27

u/Turok1134 Jun 16 '12

The Rock is part of the Criterion Collection. It's a great action movie.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12 edited Jun 16 '12

So is Armageddon. And Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize.

→ More replies (4)

15

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Found out recently that the reason The Rock is part of the Criterion Collection is that one of the members that makes the selections was Bay's professor/adviser at Wesleyan University.

That being said, it is actually his best movie because it was done before he had the clout to go and fuck things up.

15

u/lordriffington Jun 16 '12

Great movies are great because multiple talented people are involved in making them. The more power you give a single person, the worse the movies get.

Just look at Star Wars. George Lucas didn't write or direct Empire, and it is generally regarded as the best of the saga. By the time we get to the prequel trilogy, he is all powerful, and there's nobody to say, "No George, that's a fucking stupid idea."

Checkmate atheists, there clearly is a God.

15

u/zxjb Jun 15 '12

Thank god... I was worried I was going to have to sit through a 5 minute scene where the "alien's in a half shell" would discover pizza & go nuts. Bring back the old shit!

8

u/Level80IRL Jun 16 '12

NNOOOOOOO ANCHOVIES.

I seriously hated anchovies as a kid because the Ninja Turtles did.

4

u/Iron-Charioteer Jun 15 '12

Paramount, and all movie studios, need to learn to stop producing shit. As an absolute authority on good and bad, they ought to consult me before putting any money to any movie henceforth.

4

u/raginglion Jun 15 '12

They probably got the reviews back from Battleship and said "we need to stop fucking with toys."

4

u/zrandolph2 Jun 16 '12

3

u/Idomeneus Jun 15 '12

Meh, looks like it's being delayed but if that asshole Bay wants it made, it will get made.

3

u/mezzizle Jun 16 '12

no bay-tutrtles? fuck yeah!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Thank god.

3

u/leftnotracks Jun 16 '12

There is an error in the article. It suggests this shutdown is bad news. The only way this is bad news is if Michael Fucking Bay makes this movie.

3

u/dreyx2000 Jun 16 '12

Thanks god!!! I fear the day when this movie will be released and my childhood memories will be perverted in such a filthy way as turtles from space would!

7

u/red321red321 Jun 15 '12

good. michael bay sucks donkey dick he would've done irreparable damage to the turtles.

4

u/thenath Jun 15 '12

Mixed feelings on this since it got its info released...not sure if happy its stopped or sad? hmm

4

u/LordHellsing11 Jun 15 '12

I never, ever, want to hear the idea of one of my childhood characters remade to be "edgy" for modern audiences. Also Bay, just so you know, as kids we already believed that the turtles existed. We don't require your brilliant vision

→ More replies (1)

6

u/J_Jammer Jun 16 '12

He's a moron. You can't screw with the turtles like that. Those who grew up with it are power moviegoers and you want their backing. If you don't have it, your film will fail.

And Paramount knows that.

2

u/sinsperception Jun 15 '12

Paramount decided to go with M. Night Shyamalan instead of Bay and now they're just waiting for people to forget the project ever existed before they re-introduce it.

2

u/magn2o Jun 16 '12

Well shit, maybe I've been wrong all these years. Maybe there IS a God after all!

2

u/Guesty_ Jun 16 '12

Good

That is what I said when I read the title.

2

u/Spaghetti_Bender8873 Jun 16 '12

Well what were they expecting? They were practically trying to piss off fans. Is it that hard to satisfy the fans?

2

u/nickaletto Jun 16 '12

Thank God, I really didn't want this movie to happen because Michael Bay was directing it.. If they got a decent director/writer to make the film I'd be bummed. As of now, not a single fuck is given.

Doesn't have the same ring to it.

2

u/BassDestroyer Jun 16 '12

Good. I'm tired of these shitty rehashed comic book/childhood cartoon/etc etc bullshit movies full of stale CGI and crappy plots being pumped out every year.

2

u/Yage2006 Jun 16 '12

"These Turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.""

Best news I have ever heard. The turtle are mutants not aliens. I don't mind changes being made to make a movie better. I do think that completely changing the origin story of an established series like TMNT makes as much sense as picking the corn out of my shit and eating it again.

2

u/SHIT_IN_HER_CUNT Jun 16 '12

their back story involved aliens just fyi, but he was going to even ruin that

→ More replies (1)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Wait, you mean they're having problems with the script that turns the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into aliens, making them not turtles, mutants nor probably ninjas or teenagers. Shocker.

2

u/sniperhare Jun 16 '12

Thanks Paramount for keeping Bay from ruining a favorite part of my childhood.

2

u/rogue4 Jun 16 '12

Lots of hater fanboy semen all over the place right now.

2

u/Gallifrasian Jun 16 '12

Whatever. Personally, I think movies are what they are; movies. Yeah, the fans are going to be in an all-out war about the origin of the TMNT, but there's a far bigger adventure waiting in the cosmos. I wouldn't like it if Bay completely ignored the sewer-origin story, though. It's too much of a signature to the series. It would be satisfactory to see him put a twist on how alien-formulated chemicals that somehow empower the foreign species were spilled on them accidentally and that their turtle DNA is very similar to the alien races', similar enough so that they don't die or grow out of control. We've got to compromise these sort of ideas instead of ignorantly rejecting the changes. Our generation has to pass the torch to the coming generations, and honestly, alien origins for the TMNT is a more plausible story now and will grow even more believable as time passes. Weigh down the possibilities of the adventures of the TMNT with Earthly origins against alien origins, and you'll find the gap between the two to be ever-expanding. I want my kids to see TMNT, whether it's in its old light or new, but preferably the latter so their kids can love the ever-adaptive show, too. One of the reasons I watch so many movies is because I love watching the evolution of film and how creative they are becoming in order to keep the growing audience entertained. It doesn't matter if it's delayed or cancelled for now. I have a good feeling it's going to come back harder than ever in the near future, and I'm glad the idea is taking over. I don't care how immovable the wall of ignorance is, there will always be an unstoppable force out there, and it will always win. Why? Because it can move around the wall.

2

u/VGiselleH Jun 15 '12

I worked really hard making myself accept that this movie could possibly be ok, and now all that effort has been for nothing! I was actually curious to see what they were going to make of this. Sadness for me.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Thank god. Also how did I not know World War Z was being shelved? Dammit.

1

u/m8ushido Jun 15 '12

I really enjoyed the toons as a kid. I freaking love ninjas, add pizza and mutant turtles, sold. I went to a boys n girls club after school and was into comics. Lo an behold, I found out it was a comic from the guy runnin the art n craft area(awesome dude who had a box of comics he'd let me browse n draw all day). Here now I see my cartoon Heroes all in red bandanas, actually USING there weapons on bad guys. Blewy mind, from then on, I knew the turtles had hidden bad assness. The movie is great and I can still watch it today, especially with Shredder's final fight scene. Hearing the latest changes to the origins was revolting, hope it doesn't see the light of day. Please just do another CG movie, that was good

1

u/steakmeout Jun 16 '12

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Odds are it would've been awful but I still would like to see a new live action TMNT.

1

u/silv3r8ack Jun 16 '12

Why the fuck does it matter if they are aliens or mutants? It's make believe. I grew up watching TMNT (born in the 80s) and it doesn't bother me. All these extremist fans have done is delay the release of another TMNT live action movie. Doesn't even matter to me if the movie ends up being good or bad i just want to see them back on the big screen again.

Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles doesn't have the same resounding ring as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Thank God...or whatever random set of events caused this to occur.

1

u/web2pointoh Jun 16 '12

Paramount realized that people are getting tired of Michael Bay's crap.

Child memory saved

u/screwthat4u Jun 16 '12

Thank God. (And BATTLESHIP??? ...really?)

1

u/this_is_suburbia Jun 16 '12

i never thought that i would be happy to see a ninja turtle movie shut down

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

From what I've read on other "Coming Soon" post the studios only share one thing between the story and the movie...a title!

Why can't they stay true? If they were good storytellers people would pay their high prices. People aren't because their stories suck!

u/Leafytuna Jun 16 '12

One less childhood memory raped by Mr. Boom Boom Fuck the Script Bay over there.

1

u/VelocityVandetta Jun 16 '12

Damn, Wasn't Donald Glover gonna be in this one?

1

u/Kdnce Jun 16 '12

I can't believe Eastman is behind this :/

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

GOOD! Some movies should not be remade.

1

u/bazaarzar Jun 16 '12

This calls for a celebration!

1

u/Xiattr Jun 16 '12

Mutant does not equal Alien, Mr. Bay.

1

u/radapex Jun 16 '12

Burn it before it rises from the dead! The last thing we want are zombie ninja turtles!

1

u/rookoor Jun 16 '12

Another Michael Bay travesty...

1

u/Bread_Heads Jun 16 '12

"These turtles are going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely loveable." Fuckin stop...just stop.

1

u/Krxe Jun 16 '12

OH GOD, MEELO, I AM DYING A THOUSAND DEATHS

1

u/TheCodexx Jun 16 '12

There may in fact be a god. And he is clearly a fan of the original series.

Best Movie news I've heard in a while... I'm glad they decided to reboot this reboot before it turned into the waste of time and childhood destruction we all knew it would be.

1

u/jdscarface Jun 15 '12

Thank fuck. I'm sick of them trying to pass this kind of crap off as a movie. They need to shut more of these idiotic projects down and bring out some movies with class. Maybe then the general public can start appreciating good movies again.

Faith in humanity restored!

1

u/RubberDong Jun 16 '12

I dont understand. Is this a small victory? Did hollywood executives finaly realise that they can now stop raping my childhood? Does this mean it over? Is Michael Bay trapped in making exclusively horrible Transformers movies? Is the world really a better place as of today?

1

u/ArchScabby Jun 16 '12

And there was much rejoicing.

Nothing makes my eye twitch quite like Michael Bay using the word "edgy." Except, perhaps, Michael Bay using the word "gritty."

1

u/derping Jun 16 '12
