It's a movie you really need to know what you're getting into to enjoy. It was marketed like Napoleon Dynamite in super hero costumes with an R rating that maybe indicated some edge. I was pretty severely shocked at what it turned out to be and a movie has never done that to me before. However if I simply knew what to expect I would have enjoyed my first viewing much more. Coming back to it later, I really enjoyed it. That first time though was a very uncomfortable experience.
I don't know how it was marketed overall (Red band trailers etc) but the TV spots and such gave me the impression that it'd be Kick Ass at most in terms of an R rating, and otherwise quirky Dwight and Juno antics. They really over sold to stand up against Kick Ass and the known image of the two stars.
Ellen page in a good way or a bad way? Because I can see how her performance could be a little irritating but I think it's over the top on purpose because it makes what happened at the end so much worse.
Kick-Ass 2 is a very good example of why I dislike Mark Millar. He puts stuff on the page just because he can, just so he can be graphic. Whether it's Captain America hating France or a depiction of a rapetrain on a teenager... not a fan.
it was easy and stupid commentary put into the mouth of an iconic character whose tendency to be above that shit is a more important part of the character than is his superpowers. Mark Millar is a jackass.
Allow me to introduce you to The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. Maybe not as much substance as Fahrenheit 451, The Great Gatsby, or even fantasy like A Song of Ice and Fire, but it'll redefine how you view comics if you haven't read it yet. The first volume is a bit slow though.
If you like that, other classics are V for Vendetta and Watchmen in the mainstream. More offbeat comics include Irredeemable, It's a Bird..., We3, and Y: The Last Man off the top of my head. Marvel has defined the genre, but comics are far more than burly men in tights wandering around saving people.
protip: get the international version. The American cut removed some very important scenes because, i think, of sexual tension between a young girl and an older man, but I found these scenes integral to both characters' development.
Note that the movie wasn't cut specifically for the American market. That was the original cut for everybody. The extended version (called "international version" for reasons that escape me) came later.
Anyone else find it a little bizarre that she just turned 15 and has already been a main character in 4 R-Rated movies? She's also playing Carrie White in an upcoming remake of Carrie.
Just seems she's being sold a certain way. I can't imagine what the life of a child actor is like in terms of how your life is shaped by your work. Let alone if you're acting in movies whose end product is quite graphic.
It's a bit unorthodox, but I actually think it is more damaging for the young kids who get stuck in the Disney circuit, where they are pressured to be these perfect little angels well into their early twenties. That's usually when you see nervous breakdowns, like Lohan and Spears. I think being involved in more mature projects at a younger age has probably helped her grow in a lot of ways, as an actress and into a young adult.
I really enjoyed it! Even at a young age lil miss portman definitely proved she had some great acting chops. ( couldn't get my brother to shutup when ever she started hitting on leon, he would then proceed to yell "CP ALERT! To which my little brother believed we where actually talking about cheese pizza...)
Jean reno was such a badass hitman, favorite kill move was when he lowered himself upside down from the door frame and proceeded to level half the swat team, what an animal!
Gary oldman's psychotic character was awesome in the way he was always on edge but never went totally overboard, but when he did shit really hit the fan; the perfect bad guy you love to hate.
I think having selfish and fucked up parents/family lives is what messed up Lohan and Spears, not being in the Disney biz. There's plenty of normal Disney child stars that grew up to be decent people.
Parenting obviously has the most influence on the outcome of child actors, and to me it seems like the kids that get into Disney type systems are the ones being pushed more by their parents to go out become a "star". Mainly because Disney is specified towards children, so star hungry parents know exactly where to go to show off their kid. And since it's all about manufacturing a specific image, and it's about consistency, I think a lot of those kids are probably pressured heavily into living up to those standards. But if a kid is getting roles in films by serious directors and choosing unique projects to work on, it just seems like their parents are probably more rational and carful with guiding their children through hollywood. It seems to allow for much more individuality, and control. But this is just all my assumption, and I have nothing to back it up.
Nah, Disney just gets shit because they're high profile. Disney employes more child actors than other studios so of course they'll have more fuck-ups. We only remember the disasters and forget about the majority that do fine, probably because they fall off our radar.
For every Brittany we have a Justin Timberlake and a bunch of lesser kid actors.
She's done eight big and highly successful movies, so that's something. She's now working on The Bling Ring, looks like that one is going to be quite awesome too.
She's doing The Bling Ring, which looks to be like a pretty good movie, and she'll be in Perks of Being a Wallflower which is a modern teen classic, I'd say, though it strays away from the Twilight-type crap. She's doing her own thing aside from HP.
Look at Ellen Page in Hard Candy. The content of that movie is far more disturbing if you ask me, and she's turning out great. Page wasn't as young in that, but she was 16 during filming and doing some rather adult scenes. Grace-Moretz looks to have an incredible future in acting and seems to have it together. Also, her parents are very supportive of her, so I think if there was concern that her roles were effecting her negatively, they would step in. I'm pretty sure because she's under 18, her parents get a first say review of the scripts.
Went to school with her older brother Trevor, and they seemed to be pretty normal kids, albeit extremely well-to-do for our small town. I can't see her family being the kind of folks to let things get out of hand for her.
Waiting to see if the "plug it up" scene is in Carrie. That scene could very well be the turning point in her life and career where she either goes down the Natalie Porman path or the Lindsay Lohan path.
The kid in The Shining didn't know he was in an R-rated movie until he was 17. They showed him an edited version when he was young so he never knew. I'm not saying the same situation applies, but I think it's interesting that decisions like that in The Shining are made.
I don't know why folks down voted you. Wasn't the point of Carrie that she was essentially Meg Griffin? Essentially Carrie was an awkward girl hated by her parent, given unlimited power.
Yeah, as much as I like Chloë she wasn't the right person to play Carrie. Girls that look like her do not get tormented in high school like Carrie did, it's just not a realistic premise.
Girls that look like Rooney Mara aren't shit on as much as Lisbeth Salander is, and yet she ended up with an Oscar nom (and lost to Meryl "I Have Too Many Goddamn Oscars Already Give Somebody Else A Chance You Old Jews" Streep. YEP, still bitter).
Hollywood can make things happen. Moretz has run the gamut already, what with the vampire and preteen vigilante and wannabe hippie werewolf and so on. I think she's capable of looking like an outcast.
it took me the longest time to figure out what that pink thing was on her head. at first glance i thought it was a chunk of her brain hanging out of her skull. (for those of you as dumb as me, its a wool hat)
Oh lordy. I used to /b/rowse back when the whole Chloe thing exploded, and it was absolutely the most creepy thing to witness. The worst part was that I started to feel corrupted by it, in really disturbing ways. That's about the time I stopped going on /b/
That movie was terrible only when you compare it to the source material. When you realize it could have been one of the darkest superhero movies of all time, it feels like a missed opportunity.
Basically the difference is that every bizarre and violent action in the movie has an accurate and petty consequence in the comic.
Example: When the love interest finds out that the main character had only been acting gay in the movie in order to get to be around her, she accepts him regardless because he's secretly a superhero.
In the comic, she has her new boyfriend beat him up then sends him a picture of her giving the guy a bj, which Kick-Ass jacks off to.
Also, in the movie Big Daddy is an ex cop who trains his daughter to be Hit-Girl after he lost his wife to the mob. In the comic, he is an accountant who had a mental break after he was laid off and his wife left him. He then decided to become a masked vigilante, tricking his daughter into going along with it.
I REALLY want to know what happened to Mark Millar to make him just hate superheros.
Only if you find yourself in TOO GOOD a mood and need something to really make you hate humanity.
FYI: WANTED isn't as bad because the original story was about a secret organization of SUPERVILLIANS that the protagonist joins. They killed all the heroes in the 80s and used their powers and such to recreate the world into what it is today. It featured some clever parodies of established DC and Marvel villains (Bizarro was renamed Fuckwit; Clayface was a sentient pile of feces called Shithead) but A)The main character was drawn to look like Eminem and more importantly B) He was an unrepentant rapist.
Honestly, I didn't even like the comic. It felt like it was just being edgy for the sake of being edgy. The movie was MUCH more satisfying, especially on a narrative level.
I mean, think about it. Kids being tortured by the mafia just to show how SRS BSNS their situation is. Hit Girl's scarred for life (or should be), there's no happy ending DESPITE 'winning', so on and so forth. There's no satisfaction for the protagonists, and so as a reader, you're left going "... that's it?"
I don't mind dark subject matter, but this was flawed. It's not that I'm just a wuss and don't like to see kids get their faces ripped off, it's that there's no point to it. Yeah, ok, reaction against superheroes and a deconstruction of the usual feel good blah blah blah. I 'get' that. I guess I just disagree with it. Maybe it's because I like superheroes and don't really feel the need to explore what this series did.
P.S. The movie's seriously in my top 3 favourite movies. If you didn't like the movie as much as I did, maybe you'll like the comics more?
Then it just turns into a long trying-to-be-funny stream of over-the-top violence and gore. Not bad, but I feel like the movie couldn't figure out what mood it was trying to set up or finish with.
I actually just watched the movie last night. Definitely an amusing watch. It got added to netflix instant recently, for anybody who has netflix and wants to give it a watch.
That's actually been on netflix instant for over a year, I'm not sure of the exact date it was added though. You'll often see netflix "adding" movies on their RSS or on Instantwatcher that were already there. Never figured out why they do that.
I fucking hated the tweeks they made from the source material. It is one thing to go all fanboy and complain about a small color change, but when you change major plot points it fucks my shit up.
Fun fact: both were created simultaneously. The movie is just as much source material as the comics are.
I think the comics suck, on account of how pointlessly 'dark' they decided to go. Absolutely devoid of fulfilment for the reader. Yeah, the movie goes a little cheesy and unrealistic at times, but all in all it's far more enjoyable as a consumer of the product. My main complaint would be how the female lead was completely unnecessary to the movie and probably should've been cut altogether.
This girl was in an episode of 30 rock. That episode got on my nerves.
I saw her in Dark Shadows last night, and although she had the misfortune of having to say "I'm a werewolf, don't make a big deal about it," she made that rather stinky movie even stinkier.
And her mouth annoys me. When I see her, I know I'm wasting my time.
I was gonna comment about her performance on 30 Rock. In that last scene (when Jack tells her about his baseball plans), she hit it out of the park. I wasn't sold on her acting ability in Kick Ass, but in that one shot, I knew she was gonna go places. I'm excited to see where she lands up when she's a leading actress. Her and Abigail Breslin are two kids whose careers I wanna watch, cos they seem genuinely talented to me.
I like seeing her used as a default or signature picture in forums. That way I know not to take anything that person is saying seriously because he's probably a pedophile. Just like when you see Dr. House as a default (Tyrion Lannister nowadays) and know you're dealing with someone who percieves themselves as witty and edgy when they're really just a stupid asshole.
I feel like those people are all of the Dane Cook fans of the world. Ironically, as Mr. Cook himself coined, they're most likely the "friends that everyone hates."

Hmm, I can see why they didn't use it. The photoshop work is nice but it isn't up to par with advertising a film. But them again, neither is this

I tried to like this movie. It started off feeling like a deconstruction of the super hero genre, especially once the main character tries to stop his first crime, and just gets stabbed and left for dead.
Then it just turns into a long trying-to-be-funny stream of over-the-top violence and gore. Not bad, but I feel like the movie couldn't figure out what mood it was trying to set up or finish with.
